    Effect of the plasticizer on permeability, mechanical resistance and thermal behaviour of composite coating films

    Thin layer deposit of a composite material on solid particle surfaces used in the food industry aims to ensure the protection of food powder against aggressive environments such as amoist atmosphere. The layer, having a thickness of a few fractions of millimetre, must have certain physico-chemical properties: it must be compatible with the product, itmust be impermeable to water and oxygen, itmust have goodmechanical strength and good adhesion to the surface of the coated powder. Furthermore the layer must fulfil the regulatory requirements for food ingredients. Film properties like continuity, permeability, and mechanical resistance depend on the choice of the excipients included in the formulation and the operating conditions which can modify the constraints generated at the interface film-powder. As a consequence, the scientific issue consists of combining the local phenomena happening at amicroscopic level on the surface of the particle with the processing technology and the process parameters. In a first step, the attention is focussed on the film and its formulation. For this step, films are prepared separately and they are dried under very smooth conditions. Test samples are taken from the formed composite films and contain hydroxypropyl methylcellulose asmatrix (67% of driedmaterial),micronised stearic acid as hydrophobic filler (20% of driedmaterial) and a plasticizer (13% of driedmaterial). The filmformation procedure and the testmethod are described in detail. The effect of the type of plasticizer (different grades of PEG) onmechanical, thermal and permeability properties of the coating film is studied. The results show that PEG with higher molecular rate provides a better plasticizing effect for the film but increases the water vapour permeability of the film

    Amotl1 mediates sequestration of the Hippo effector Yap1 downstream of Fat4 to restrict heart growth

    International audienceAlthough in flies the atypical cadherin Fat is an upstream regulator of Hippo signalling, the closest mammalian homologue, Fat4, has been shown to regulate tissue polarity rather than growth. Here we show in the mouse heart that Fat4 modulates Hippo signalling to restrict growth. Fat4 mutant myocardium is thicker, with increased cardiomyocyte size and proliferation, and this is mediated by an upregulation of the transcriptional activity of Yap1, an effector of the Hippo pathway. Fat4 is not required for the canonical activation of Hippo kinases but it sequesters a partner of Yap1, Amotl1, out of the nucleus. The nuclear translocation of Amotl1 is accompanied by Yap1 to promote cardiomyocyte proliferation. We, therefore, identify Amotl1, which is not present in flies, as a mammalian intermediate for non-canonical Hippo signalling, downstream of Fat4. This work uncovers a mechanism for the restriction of heart growth at birth, a process which impedes the regenerative potential of the mammalian heart

    Is laterality of congenital diaphragmatic hernia a reliable prognostic factor? French national cohort study

    International audienceObjectives: The objective of this study was to assess whether the laterality of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) was a prognostic factor for neonatal survival.Methods : This was a cohort study using the French national database of the Reference Center for Diaphragmatic Hernias. The principal endpoint was survival after hospitalization in intensive care.We made a comparative study between right CDH and left CDH by univariate and multivariate analysis. Terminations and stillbirths were excluded from analyses of neonatal outcomes.Results: A total of 506 CDH were included with 67 (13%) right CDH and 439 left CDH (87%). Rate of survival was 49% for right CDH and 74% for left CDH (P < .01). Multivariate analysis showed two factors significantly associated with mortality: thoracic herniation of liver (OR 2.27; IC 95% [1.07-4.76]; P = .03) and lung-to-head-ratio over under expected (OR 2.99; IC 95% [1.41-6.36]; P < .01). Side of CDH was not significantly associated with mortality (OR 1.87; IC 95% [0.61-5.51], P = .26).Conclusion : Rate of right CDH mortality is more important than left CDH. Nevertheless after adjusting for lung-to-head-ratio and thoracic herniation of liver, right CDH does not have a higher risk of mortality than left CDH
