La soledad de las personas mayores

    Get PDF

Towards the development of poly (phenylene sulphide) based nanocomposites with enhanced mechanical, electrical and tribological properties

    Get PDF
Novel poly(phenylene sulphide) (PPS) nanocomposites reinforced with an aminated derivative (PPS-NH2) covalently attached to acid-treated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were prepared via simple melt-blending technique. Their morphology, viscoelastic behaviour, electrical conductivity, mechanical and tribological properties were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the grafting process was effective in uniformly dispersing the SWCNTs within the matrix. The storage and loss moduli as a function of frequency increased with the SWCNT content, tending to a plateau in the low-frequency regime. The electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites was considerably enhanced in the range 0.1?0.5 wt% SWCNTs; electrical and rheological percolation thresholds occurred at similar nanotube concentrations. Mechanical tests demonstrated that with only 1.0 wt% SWCNTs the Young's modulus and tensile strength of the matrix improved by 51 and 37%, respectively, without decrement in toughness, ascribed to a very efficient load transfer. A moderate decrease in the friction coefficient and a 75% reduction in wear rate were found for the abovementioned nanotube loading, indicating that PPS-NH2-g-SWCNTs are good tribological additives for thermoplastic polymers. Based on the promising results obtained in this work, it is expected that these nanofillers will be used to develop high-performance thermoplastic/CNT nanocomposites for structural applications

Analysis of Field Data to Describe the Effect of Context (Acoustic and Non-Acoustic Factors) on Urban Soundscapes

    Get PDF
The need to improve acoustic environments in our cities has led to increased interest in correcting or minimising noise pollution in urban environments, something that has been associated with the resurgence of the soundscape approach. This line of research highlights the importance of context in the perception of acoustic environments. Despite this, few studies consider together a wide number of variables relating to the context, and analyse the relative importance of each. The purpose of this paper is therefore to identify the acoustic and non-acoustic characteristics of a place (context) that influence an individual’s perception of the sound environment and the relative importance of these factors in soundscape. The aim is to continue advancing in the definition of an acoustic comfort indicator for urban places. The data used here were collected in various soundscape campaigns carried out by Tecnalia in Bilbao (Spain) between 2011 and 2014. These studies involved 534 evaluations of 10 different places. The results indicate that many diverse contextual factors determine soundscape, the most important being the congruence between soundscape and landscape. The limitations of the findings and suggestions for further research are also discussed. The research presented in this manuscript has been developed with the financial support of the Basque Government, the Bilbao City council, and within the framework of the LIFE QUADMAP project (LIFE 10/ENV/IT/407

Improving quercetin anticancer activity through a novel polyvinylpyrrolidone/polyvinyl alcohol/TiO2 nanocomposite

A hydrogel nanocomposite comprising polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and titanium oxide (TiO2) was prepared and encapsulated in a double emulsion as a pH-triggered delivery vehicle for quercetin (QC), an antitumor drug. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) was used to estimate the size and confirm the stability of QC-loaded nanoparticles. The interactions between the nanocomposite components, its crystalline structure and the morphology of the nanoparticles were characterized through Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), respectively. Drug loading and encapsulation efficiency significantly improved after incorporation of TiO2, which corroborates the beneficial effect of this component. In vitro release experiments indicated the pH-responsivity of the nanocarrier, with higher amount of QC released in an acidic medium than at neutral pH. Due to the presence of a double emulsion, the release pattern was sustained and gradual in both environments. Cellular experiments including MTT assay and flow cytometry were conducted using U87 cell line to compare the anticancer activity of free QC and QCloaded nanoparticles. MTT assay was also performed on a noncancerous cell line (L929) to assess potential side effects of the drug release system. The results obtained herein confirm the suitability of the developed nanocarrier as an efficient drug delivery vehicle for tumor therapy.Comunidad de Madri

Moving towards for Active Role for Smart Grid Users: Study about the perception of smart grids among domestic consumers in Spain (UPGRID project) / Avanzando hacia el rol activo de los usuarios de las smart grids: estudio sobre la percepción de las redes eléctricas inteligentes entre los consumidores domésticos en España (proyecto UPGRID)

Integrating the perspective of smart grid users is the next challenge to be tackled in order to deploy fully the broad technical development of this new generation of electrical grids and improve the efficacy thereof. This is the conclusion reached by the social research developed within the framework of the European UPGRID project. This paper presents the main findings of the Spanish demonstration, working with domestic electricity consumers. The results indicate that these consumers know little about their contract and consumption of electricity, with regard to smart grids. In spite of this, there is some evidence that there is willingness among these consumers to make a change in their energy use towards more environmentally responsible behaviours, a tendency that needs to be developed so that consumers play an active role, which is essential in order to deliver optimal energy supply through smart grids. However, the results must be taken with a degree of caution, since, in spite of the major drive for recruitment, the sample was small and the experimental mortality between phases was high, so the research presented is exploratory in nature. We would like to thank the European Union for the funding it granted the UPGRID project ‘Real proven solutions to enable active demand and distributed generation flexible integration, through a fully controllable LOW Voltage and medium voltage distribution grid’ (H2020 Research and Innovation Programme, subsidy agreement number 646.531), the framework research project for this paper. We would also like to thank the different people and associations who collaborated with and participated in the social research conducted, without whom its development would not have been possible, and especially Iberdrola Distribución and EVE for providing us with the information required to conduct this research, and the Bilbao Federation of Neighbourhood Associations for their support and participation

Effects of recreational fishing on three fish species from the Posidonia oceanica meadows off Minorca (Balearic archipelago, western Mediterranean)

    Get PDF
Experimental fishing and visual censuses were conducted at nine Posidonia oceanica sites off Minorca exposed to different levels of fishing intensity to assess the effects of recreational fishing on the species that dominate the catch. Total catch per unit effort (CPUE) was highly seasonal and a statistically significant interaction term existed between the season and the level of fishing intensity. CPUE decreased everywhere at the end of the fishing season (autumn), but such a reduction was more intense at those sites exposed to the highest level of fishing. Visual censuses confirmed that there was a lower abundance of vulnerable fish in autumn. Differences vanished in spring probably because fish reshuffled between the considered sites throughout the winter, when the level of fishing intensity was extremely low. Although the average total lengths of Serranus scriba and Diplodus annularis were unaffected by the level of fishing intensity, the average total length of Coris julis was smaller at the most heavily fished sites. In conclusion, recreational fishing has a relevant impact on most of the exploited species and some of the seasonality reported for the Posidonia oceanica fish assemblages might be caused by the seasonality of the fishery
