First results in QCD with 2+1 light flavors using the fixed-point action
This is a progress report on 2+1 flavor simulation with the FP action on a
lattice with spatial size L=1.2fm. Since m_{ud} is quite small in our
simulation we are in the delta regime for the two light flavors where the low
lying excitations are described by a quantum mechanical rotator. From here we
extract the low energy constant F. We also measure the AWI mass and present
results on numerical issues like low-mode averaging and autocorrelation times.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, parallel talk at LATTICE 200
Bullying Roles in Changing Contexts: The Stability of Victim and Bully Roles from Primary to Secondary School
The present study was conducted to predict bullying roles over a six years time period and across contexts differing in the degree of peer hierarchies. Out of two representative data sets from primary (N = 1525) and secondary school (N = 2958), 282 children (156 boys; 126 girls) were followed up longitudinally. Self reports on bullying experiences and peer reports about social status were assessed by a structured individual interview (in primary school) and by questionnaire given classwise (in secondary school). Risk analyses showed, that only a bully role in primary school yields a risk to be sustained in secondary school. However, victims in primary school classes with a more pronounced degree of hierarchical structuring proved stable in their role while the victim role was unstable from primary school classes with low hierarchical structuring. This interaction did not apply to bully role stability. Differential characteristics of the victim and the bully role in primary school and secondary school settings are discussed.
Finite Sholander Trees, Trees, and their Betweenness
We provide a proof of Sholander's claim (Trees, lattices, order, and
betweenness, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 3, 369-381 (1952)) concerning the
representability of collections of so-called segments by trees, which yields a
characterization of the interval function of a tree. Furthermore, we streamline
Burigana's characterization (Tree representations of betweenness relations
defined by intersection and inclusion, Mathematics and Social Sciences 185,
5-36 (2009)) of tree betweenness and provide a relatively short proof.Comment: 8 page
Detailed design of a high speed switched reluctance starter/generator for more/all electric aircraft
The basic concepts and advantages of more/all electric aircraft (M/AEA) are briefly addressed. The combined starter/generator (CS/G) system is introduced as a key technology to enable M/AEA. Some important performance requirements for CS/G system are obtained. Based on these requirements, a high speed switched reluctance machine (SRM) is designed to operate as a starter/generator. The entire design process is mainly divided into two stages: electromagnetic design and thermal design. In electromagnetic design stage, the electromagnetic structure and dimensions of the machine and the number of phase winding turns per pole are obtained; the topology and main technical details of the converter are briefly introduced as well. In thermal design stage, a liquid-cooling system is designed based on the thermal analysis of the machine. In the end, the performances of the designed SRM are basically verified by simulation. To get high performances, the exciting angles are optimized in two different operating modes respectively, and the optimized performances in the motoring mode are given as well
Numerical simulation of non-isothermal viscoelastic flows at high Weissenberg numbers using a finite volume method on general unstructured meshes
In this numerical study, an original approach to simulate non-isothermal
viscoelastic fluid flows at high Weissenberg numbers is presented. Stable
computations over a wide range of Weissenberg numbers are assured by using the
root conformation approach in a finite volume framework on general unstructured
meshes. The numerical stabilization framework is extended to consider
thermo-rheological properties in Oldroyd-B type viscoelastic fluids. The
temperature dependence of the viscoelastic fluid is modeled with the
time-temperature superposition principle. Both Arrhenius and WLF shift factors
can be chosen, depending on the flow characteristics. The internal energy
balance takes into account both energy and entropy elasticity. Partitioning is
achieved by a constant split factor. An analytical solution of the balance
equations in planar channel flow is derived to verify the results of the main
field variables and to estimate the numerical error. The more complex entry
flow of a polyisobutylene-based polymer solution in an axisymmetric 4:1
contraction is studied and compared to experimental data from the literature.
We demonstrate the stability of the method in the experimentally relevant range
of high Weissenberg numbers. The results at different imposed wall
temperatures, as well as Weissenberg numbers, are found to be in good agreement
with experimental data. Furthermore, the division between energy and entropy
elasticity is investigated in detail with regard to the experimental setup.Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures, 2 table
How well suited are current thermodynamic models to predict or interpret the composition of (Ba,Sr)SOâ solid-solutions in geothermal scalings?
In this study, we report results of the analysis of a particularly interesting scaling sample
from the geothermal plant in Neustadt-Glewe in northern Germany, which contained
19% Galena (PbS) and 81% of a heterogeneous assemblage of (Ba,Sr)SOâ crystals with
varying compositions, 0.15 < X < 0.53. A main fraction of the sample (~56%) has a
barite content of X â 0.32. We try to relate the solid composition of the (Ba,Sr)SOâ
solid-solution to the conditions at the geothermal plant concerning temperature,
pressure, and solution composition, and discuss it with respect to the challenges in
modelling the composition of (Ba,Sr)SOâ solid-solutions on the basis of thermodynamic
mixing models. We note that considerable uncertainties are related to the description
of (Ba,Sr)SOâ formation by means of thermodynamic models. The scaling composition
observed in this study would be in line with endmember solubilities as predicted by
the PhreeqC-Pitzer database for 70 °C and an interaction parameter, a0 = 1.6. According
to such a model, the scaling heterogeneity would reflect bimodal precipitation
behaviour due to various degrees of depletion of the brine with respect to X(Ba)().
Minor fluctuations in X(Ba)(): 0.0017 < X(Ba)() < 0.0042 explain the full range of
observed solid compositions. The choice especially of the interaction parameter seems
to some extent arbitrary. This knowledge gap strongly limits the interpretation of (Ba,Sr)
SOâ compositions. Thus, it is not possible to distinguish between kinetic and thermodynamic
effects on partitioning or to use the solid-solution composition to draw conclusions
about the precipitation conditions (e.g. Temperature)
