    Sporopollenin, the least known yet toughest natural biopolymer

Sporopollenin is highly cross-linked polymer composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen that is extraordinarily stable and has been found chemically intact in sedimentary rocks some 500 million years old. It makes up the outer shell (exine) of plant spores and pollen and when extracted it is in the form of an empty exine or microcapsule. The exines resemble the spores and pollen from which they are extracted, in size and morphology. Also, from any one plant such characteristics are incredible uniform. The exines can be used as microcapsules or simply as micron-sized particles due to the variety of functional groups on their surfaces. The loading of a material into the chamber of the exine microcapsule is via multi-directional nano-diameter sized channels. The exines can be filled with a variety of polar and non-polar materials. Enzymes can be encapsulated within the shells and still remain active. In vivo studies in humans have shown that an encapsulated active substance can have a substantially increased bioavailability than if it is taken alone. The sporopollenin exine surface possesses phenolic, alkane, alkene, ketone, lactone, and carboxylic acid groups. Therefore, it can be derivatized in a number of ways, which has given rise to applications in areas, such as solid supported for peptide synthesis, catalysis, and ion-exchange chromatography. Also, the presence of the phenolic groups on sporopollenin endows it with antioxidant activity

    In this paper we discuss the existence of stationary incompressible fluids with splash singularities. Specifically, we show that there are stationary solutions to the Euler equations with two fluids whose interfaces are arbitrarily close to a splash, and that there are stationary water waves with splash singularities.Comment: 19 page

    Phenomenology of General Gauge Mediation in light of a 125 GeV Higgs

    We explore the phenomenology of the full General Gauge Mediation parameter space in the MSSM focusing on the consequences of having a fundamental Higgs around 125 GeV. Assuming GUT-complete structure of the hidden sector, we allow for deviations from the strict definition of gauge mediated SUSY-breaking coming from mild violations of messenger-parity and from extra couplings between the Higgs multiplets and the hidden sector. Relaxing the GUT assumption, our parameter space is defined by the property of having vanishing A-terms at the messenger scale. In this extended setup we focus on the possibility of splitting the SU(3) mass parameters of GGM. In all these scenarios we investigate the possible spectra, discussing to what extent having an Higgs mass around 125 GeV is constraining the GGM parameter space and what are the possible signatures at LHC.Comment: 83 pages, 29 figures; v2: minor corrections, references adde

    Di-photon excess illuminates Dark Matter

    We propose a simplified model of dark matter with a scalar mediator to accommodate the di-photon excess recently observed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. Decays of the resonance into dark matter can easily account for a relatively large width of the scalar resonance, while the magnitude of the total width combined with the constraint on dark matter relic density lead to sharp predictions on the parameters of the Dark Sector. Under the assumption of a rather large width, the model predicts a signal consistent with ~300 GeV dark matter particle in channels with large missing energy. This prediction is not yet severely bounded by LHC Run I searches and will be accessible at the LHC Run II in the jet plus missing energy channel with more luminosity. Our analysis also considers astrophysical constraints, pointing out that future direct detection experiments will be sensitive to this scenario.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures.     New LHC bound on low-mass diphoton resonances

    We derive a new bound on diphoton resonances using inclusive diphoton cross section measurements at the LHC, in the so-far poorly constrained mass range between the Upsilon and the SM Higgs. This bound sets the current best limit on axion-like particles that couple to gluons and photons, for masses between 10 and 65 GeV. We also estimate indicative sensitivities of a dedicated diphoton LHC search in the same mass region, at 7, 8 and 14 TeV.     Effects of whey protein concentrate on shelf life of cookies using corn and sunflower oils

    The objective of this work was to study the effect of whey protein concentrate (WPC) on shelf life of cookies using corn and sunflower oils as fat source. Wheat flour was partially replaced by WPC with levels of 5, 7.5, 10 and 15 %. A User Defined Design was used and the three following responses were measured: peroxide index (meqO2/kg), flavour (score from 1-10) and rancidity (detectable and non-detectable) at 0, 7, 14, 21 and 70 days of storage. Results show that during storage peroxide index (PI) increases in all cookies samples. However a significant decrease was found when corn oil was used instead of sunflower oil and when the level of WPC goes from 0% to 15%. Regarding sensory evaluation, all cookies were evaluated as acceptable (scored flavour ≥ 6) and no rancid flavour was perceived, except for two samples which were assigned with 5 and rancid flavour was considered as detectable; these samples correspond to cookies evaluated at day 70, elaborated with sunflower oil and the lowest dose of WPC. No significant differences were found in cookies flavour prepared with different oils. On the other hand and relative to the level of WPC replacement, differences were found by the panel at days 0 and 7, a reduction in assigned score when WPC dose was increased, however this difference was not significant in the subsequent assessment days. According to research results, an increase in stability was clearly obtained in cookies elaborated with corn oil and the highest concentration of WPC.Fil: Erben, Melina.     On the combination of kernels for support vector classifiers

    The problem of combining different sources of information arises in several situations, for instance, the classification of data with asymmetric similarity matrices or the construction of an optimal classifier from a collection of kernels. Often, each source of information can be expressed as a kernel (similarity) matrix and, therefore, a collection of kernels is available. In this paper we propose a new class of methods in order to produce, for classification purposes, an unique and optimal kernel. Then, the constructed kernel is used to train a Support Vector Machine (SVM). The key ideas within the kernel construction are two: the quantification, relative to the classification labels, of the difference of information among the kernels; and the extension of the concept of linear combination of kernels to the concept of functional (matrix) combination of kernels. The proposed methods have been successfully evaluated and compared with other powerful classifiers and kernel combination techniques on a variety of artificial and real classification problems

    Cambios y continuidades en la obra de Émile Durkheim : El modelo explicativo durkheimiano

    El escrito presenta un primer análisis de los cambios y continuidades que el modelo explicativo durkheimiano sufre a lo largo de la extensa obra del sociólogo francés. Rastreando el proceso que hacia fines del siglo XIX coloca al 'fenómeno religioso' en el centro del proyecto teórico de Durkheim, veremos como esto impacta y transforma buena parte de sus primeras formulaciones presentadas, principalmente, en Las reglas del método sociológico (1895). Haciendo foco en la pérdida de poder explicativo que sufren las variables de la morfología social (densidad, volumen y tipo de solidaridad) a expensas de su teoría de las representaciones sociales veremos como estos cambios están en línea con sus nuevas preocupaciones teóricas y su búsqueda de las leyes de la ideación colectiva. Pero a la vez, señalando las continuidades holísticas de su modelo explicativo ('síntesis química') se matiza la profundidad de dichos cambios y se discute cierta idea que ve en el último Durkheim un abandono total de lo morfológico y un definido giro idealista (T.
