Comparison of Standard Length, Fork Length, and Total Length for Measuring West Coast Marine Fishes

Measurements of adult marine fishes on the U.S. west coast are usually made using one of three methods: standard length, fork length, or total length. Each method has advantages and disadvantages. In this paper we attempt to determine whether one method is faster and/or more reliable than the other methods. We found that all three methods were comparable. There was no appreciable difference in the time it took to measure fish using the different methods. Fork length had the most reproducible results; however, it had the highest level of bias between researchers. We therefore suggest that selection of measurement type be based on what other researchers have used for the species under study. The best improvement in measurement reliability probably occurs by adequate training of personnel and not type of measurement used

Cockpit Ocular Recording System (CORS)

The overall goal was the development of a Cockpit Ocular Recording System (CORS). Four tasks were used: (1) the development of the system; (2) the experimentation and improvement of the system; (3) demonstrations of the working system; and (4) system documentation. Overall, the prototype represents a workable and flexibly designed CORS system. For the most part, the hardware use for the prototype system is off-the-shelf. All of the following software was developed specifically: (1) setup software that the user specifies the cockpit configuration and identifies possible areas in which the pilot will look; (2) sensing software which integrates the 60 Hz data from the oculometer and heat orientation sensing unit; (3) processing software which applies a spatiotemporal filter to the lookpoint data to determine fixation/dwell positions; (4) data recording output routines; and (5) playback software which allows the user to retrieve and analyze the data. Several experiments were performed to verify the system accuracy and quantify system deficiencies. These tests resulted in recommendations for any future system that might be constructed

Characterization of the Beef Cow-Calf Enterprise of the Northern Great Plains

One hundred eighty five privately owned and operated cow-calf enterprises provided production data on their beef cow-calf operations. 0ne hundred and forty eight of those also provided financial information on a modified cost basis. The enterprises were located in the states of South Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Wyoming, and North Dakota. The data were collected at the herd level according to Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA) guidelines during the years 1991-1999. By industry standards these operations were large, averaging just over 11,000 acres and 500 beginning year breeding females. They began calving approximately March 1st,, had an average 93% pregnancy rates, and an average 86.7% weaning rate. They weaned at approximately 199 days and the average weaning weight of their calves was 519 pounds. These operations had invested on average $2,087.00 per Beginning Fiscal Year Female. They spent$397.00 of Total Expenses and realized $33.00 of Net Income per Beginning Fiscal Year Female per year. Their average Return on Assets was 3.1%

Factors Affecting Profitability of the Cow-calf Enterprise in the Northern Great Plains

One hundred and forty eight privately owned and operated cow-calf enterprises were surveyed for their production and financial performance measures and the results analyzed for factors that affected profitability. The results of these analyzes indicate that for cow-calf enterprises in the Northern Great Plains, high levels of profit are a function of lower than average investment, above average reproductive performance, lower than average total expenses, and above average market prices for calves produced. Neither high nor low levels of other biological production, geographical region, size of operation, or year were factors that explained differences in profitability. Profitability measured as Return on Assets (ROA) in the High Profit group (18.16%) was higher (P\u3c0.01) than Medium or Low Profit groups and are very competitive with opportunities available in other sectors of the economy. The profit levels in the Medium and Low Profit groups (2.88% and -15.55%) are not competitive with other opportunities for investment in the economy. The long-term financial viability of the operations in these two groups would be difficult without other sources of income or investment

Cytotoxicity Profiles for a Series of Triorganophosphinegold(I) Dithiocarbamates and Triorganophosphinegold(I) Xanthates

A series of triorganophosphinegold(1) dithiocarbamate (R3PAuS2CNR'2) and xanthate (R3PAuS2COR') complexes have been prepared and characterised spectroscopically. Based on crystallographic evidence, the molecules feature linear gold(1) geometries defined by sulphur and phosphorus donors. The complexes, along with a series of known anti-cancer agents, have been screened against a panel of seven human cancer cell lines. Uniformly, the dithiocarbamate derivatives are more active than their xanthate counterparts, with the most active complex being Et3PAu(S2CNEt2), and are more active than cisplatin in all cell lines screened but, not as potent as taxol
