Hearing impairment and the issues associated with it is prominent issue in today‟s society, especially when considering the aging nature of New Zealand/Aotearoa„s population. Hearing impairment affects a diverse range of people of varying ages, ethnicities, socioeconomic status, levels of education, and degrees of literacy skills. in many cases of hearing impairment, hearing aids are suitable tools to help improve an individuals hearing, and thus their quality of life. It is important that individuals suffering from hearing impairment are provided with all the information they need to order to get the best outcomes. Poor health literacy skills can also affect a wide range of people, with research showing the majority of New Zealanders have poor health literacy. This is a concerning fact, given that poor health literacy skills can lead to poor health outcomes. It is therefore of great importance that any written materials provided to individuals, such as a hearing aid user guide, have a suitable readability for the majority of the New Zealand/Aotearoa population to understand. The aim of this study was to evaluate the readability and suitability of 24 hearing aid user guides available in New Zealand/Aotearoa. It also aimed to improve the readability and suitability of the lowest scoring user guide, by implementing learner verification and revision. Results confirmed that all 24 of the hearing aid user guides assessed had readability levels above the level recommended across previous literature. The suitability of the user guides, assessed using the SAM tool, showed that 87% of the guides were “adequate”, while the remaining guides were deemed “not suitable”. The hearing aid user guide was revised using best practise guidelines and incorporating feedback from 10 participants. After revision, the user guide readability was improved and it was received much more positively by the participants. It is hoped the results of this study will encourage revision to more hearing aid user guides available in New Zealand/Aotearoa, in order to make them easier for the hearing impaired population to read and understand

SIMULATeQCD: A simple multi-GPU lattice code for QCD calculations

The rise of exascale supercomputers has fueled competition among GPU vendors, driving lattice QCD developers to write code that supports multiple APIs. Moreover, new developments in algorithms and physics research require frequent updates to existing software. These challenges have to be balanced against constantly changing personnel. At the same time, there is a wide range of applications for HISQ fermions in QCD studies. This situation encourages the development of software featuring a HISQ action that is flexible, high-performing, open source, easy to use, and easy to adapt. In this technical paper, we explain the design strategy, provide implementation details, list available algorithms and modules, and show key performance indicators for SIMULATeQCD, a simple multi-GPU lattice code for large-scale QCD calculations, mainly developed and used by the HotQCD collaboration. The code is publicly available on GitHub.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure

Phthalates which are widely used, are ubiquitous in the environment and in some human tissues. It is generally accepted that phthalates exert their toxic action by inhibiting Leydig cell synthesis of testosterone, but in vitro studies have also shown anti-androgenic effects at the receptor level. Some cross-sectional studies have shown inverse associations between urinary levels of phthalates and reproductive hormones, but results are conflicting and the evidence base is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate if levels of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and diisononyl phthalate (DiNP) metabolites in serum are associated with serum concentrations of male reproductive hormones and semen quality. A secondary aim was to investigate metabolic pathways of DEHP and DiNP on semen quality and reproductive hormones. A cross-sectional sample of 589 spouses of pregnant women from Greenland, Poland and Ukraine were enrolled between 2002 and 2004. The men gave semen and blood samples and were interviewed. Six phthalate metabolites of DEHP and DiNP were measured by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry in serum. The metabolites were summed according to their molar weight. We observed significant inverse associations between serum levels of the metabolites, the proxies and serum testosterone. Negative associations were also discovered between some metabolites and sex hormone-binding globulin, semen volume and total sperm count Findings are compatible with a weak anti-androgenic action of DEHP metabolites, but less so for DiNP metabolites. Metabolic pathways differed significantly between the three study sites, but without major effect on semen quality or reproductive hormones. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

This causes high relevance of the application of gettering in modern microelectronic technology. The existing methods of silicon wafers gettering and the mechanisms of their occurrence are considered

Ferritin-Mediated Iron Sequestration Stabilizes Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1α upon LPS Activation in the Presence of Ample Oxygen

    Get PDF
SummaryBoth hypoxic and inflammatory conditions activate transcription factors such as hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α and nuclear factor (NF)-κB, which play a crucial role in adaptive responses to these challenges. In dendritic cells (DC), lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced HIF1α accumulation requires NF-κB signaling and promotes inflammatory DC function. The mechanisms that drive LPS-induced HIF1α accumulation under normoxia are unclear. Here, we demonstrate that LPS inhibits prolyl hydroxylase domain enzyme (PHD) activity and thereby blocks HIF1α degradation. Of note, LPS-induced PHD inhibition was neither due to cosubstrate depletion (oxygen or α-ketoglutarate) nor due to increased levels of reactive oxygen species, fumarate, and succinate. Instead, LPS inhibited PHD activity through NF-κB-mediated induction of the iron storage protein ferritin and subsequent decrease of intracellular available iron, a critical cofactor of PHD. Thus, hypoxia and LPS both induce HIF1α accumulation via PHD inhibition but deploy distinct molecular mechanisms (lack of cosubstrate oxygen versus deprivation of co-factor iron)

Accumulation of mutations in antibody and CD8 T cell epitopes in a B cell depleted lymphoma patient with chronic SARS-CoV-2 infection

Antibodies against the spike protein of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) can drive adaptive evolution in immunocompromised patients with chronic infection. Here we longitudinally analyze SARS-CoV-2 sequences in a B cell-depleted, lymphoma patient with chronic, ultimately fatal infection, and identify three mutations in the spike protein that dampen convalescent plasma-mediated neutralization of SARS-CoV-2. Additionally, four mutations emerge in non-spike regions encoding three CD8 T cell epitopes, including one nucleoprotein epitope affected by two mutations. Recognition of each mutant peptide by CD8 T cells from convalescent donors is reduced compared to its ancestral peptide, with additive effects resulting from double mutations. Querying public SARS-CoV-2 sequences shows that these mutations have independently emerged as homoplasies in circulating lineages. Our data thus suggest that potential impacts of CD8 T cells on SARS-CoV-2 mutations, at least in those with humoral immunodeficiency, warrant further investigation to inform on vaccine design
