Diversity of cercariae emergent from Heleobia parchappii (Gastropoda) in streams from the northeast of Buenos Aires Province
Researching the biodiversity of an environment is important to understand the ecosystems functioning. The freshwater environments of Argentina have varied fauna, being the digeneans very important components. Among the digeneans’ intermediate hosts, the gastropod Heleobia parchappii is widely distributed and has ecological relevance; however, knowledge about its parasitic diversity in many of the environments it inhabits needs to be expanded. The objective of this research is to contribute to the knowledge of the diversity of digeneans parasitizing H. parchapii in streams of northeastern Buenos Aires, through the morphological characterization of the cercariae that emerge from them. Between 2015 and 2022, 11589 specimens of H. parchappii were collected in the Carnaval, MartĂn, and Buñirigo streams (La Plata, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina), transported to the laboratory and kept in aquariums. Subsequently, they were exposed to direct light, the emergence of cercariae was evaluated, which were studied morphologically and classified according to morphotypes. The Emergence Index (number of snails from which morphotype i emerges/total number of snails observed) was calculated, as well as the morphotype richness for each stream. Twelve cercariae morphotypes were identified and classified into ten families. The results achieved allow increasing the record of known cercariae in H. parchappii in the studied streams, where the existence of a diverse fauna can be assumed according to the characteristics of the environment. In addition, it was observed that the Emergence Index was higher in Buñirigo stream. This study shows the need to carry out new studies to evaluate in greater depth the diversity of digenean larvae and the environmental and temporal effects on their community.Centro de Estudios ParasitolĂłgicos y de VectoresAsociaciĂłn ParasitolĂłgica Argentin
High salt induced a delayed activation of human neutrophils
High salt (NaCl) concentrations are found in a number of tissues under physiological and pathological conditions. Here, we analyzed the effects induced by high salt on the function of human neutrophils. The culture of neutrophils in medium supplemented with high salt (50 mM NaCl) for short periods (30-120 min) inhibited the ability of conventional agonists to induce the production of IL-8 and the activation of respiratory burst. By contrast, exposure to high salt for longer periods (6-18 h) resulted in the activation of neutrophils revealed by the production of high levels of IL-8, the activation of the respiratory burst, and a marked synergistic effect on the production of TNF-α induced by LPS. Increasing osmolarity of the culture medium by the addition of sorbitol or mannitol (100 mM) was shown to be completely unable to stimulate neutrophil responses, suggesting that high sodium but not an increased osmolarity mediates the activation on neutrophils responses. A similar biphasic effect was observed when the function of monocytes was analyzed. Short term exposure to high salt suppressed IL-8 and TNF-α production induced by LPS while culture for longer periods triggered the production of IL-8 but not TNF-α in the absence of LPS stimulation. Contradictory results have been published regarding how high salt modulates neutrophil function. Our results suggest that the modulation of neutrophil function by high salt is strongly dependent on the exposure time.Fil: Mazzitelli, Ignacio Gabriel. 3-Hydroxy Kynurenine Treatment Controls T. cruzi Replication and the Inflammatory Pathology Preventing the Clinical Symptoms of Chronic Chagas Disease
BACKGROUND: 3-Hydroxy Kynurenine (3-HK) administration during the acute phase of Trypanosoma. cruzi infection decreases the parasitemia of lethally infected mice and improves their survival. However, due to the fact that the treatment with 3-HK is unable to eradicate the parasite, together with the known proapoptotic and immunoregulatory properties of 3-HK and their downstream catabolites, it is possible that the 3-HK treatment is effective during the acute phase of the infection by controlling the parasite replication, but at the same time suppressed the protective T cell response before pathogen clearance worsening the chronic phase of the infection. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the effect of 3-HK treatment on the development of chronic Chagas' disease. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In the present study, we treated mice infected with T. cruzi with 3-HK at day five post infection during 5 consecutive days and investigated the effect of this treatment on the development of chronic Chagas disease. Cardiac functional (electrocardiogram) and histopathological studies were done at 60 dpi. 3-HK treatment markedly reduced the incidence and the severity of the electrocardiogram alterations and the inflammatory infiltrates and fibrosis in heart and skeletal muscle. 3-HK treatment modulated the immune response at the acute phase of the infection impairing the Th1- and Th2-type specific response and inducing TGF-β-secreting cells promoting the emergence of regulatory T cells and long-term specific IFN-γ secreting cells. 3-HK in vitro induced regulatory phenotype in T cells from T. cruzi acutely infected mice. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that the early 3-HK treatment was effective in reducing the cardiac lesions as well as altering the pattern of the immune response in experimental Chagas' disease. Thus, we propose 3-HK as a novel therapeutic treatment able to control both the parasite replication and the inflammatory response
COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF SPLIT-WINDOW AND SINGLE-CHANNEL ALGORITHMS FOR LAND SURFACE TEMPERATURE RETRIEVAL OF A PSEUDO-INVARIANT TARGET
Land surface temperature (LST) acquired from remote sensing observations is essential to monitor surface energy and water exchange processes at the land-atmosphere interface. Most LST retrieval methodologies are developed focusing on Northern hemisphere. Consequently, Southern hemisphere has a great need for investigating the performance of LST retrieval algorithms already consolidated in the literature. In this paper, we compared a Splitwindow (SW) and a Single-channel (SC) method to retrieve LST from Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS images in a dune field, Southern Brazil. To validate the results, the Atmospheric Correction Parameter Calculator (ACPC) tool and Radiative Transfer Equation (RTE) were used. Results demonstrated that both methodologies are in accordance with the RTE, despite they overestimated the LST. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that the means are not statistically significant (0.05 level). The correlations between LST retrieved and RTE were strong, producing R² of 0.984 and 0.973 for the SW and SC, respectively, and RMSE values of 1.18 and 1.6. SW also exhibited the best values of MSD (±0.983) and Bias (0.773), thus reinforcing its superior performance. SW can be applied with an accuracy of 1.18 K in Southern Brazil, without needing complex modeling or specific radiosonde
The development of a “crazed” hysteria under transference
The present work is part of the Promotional Research and Development Project Hysteria in the margins: Structure and function of the hysterical symptom in “non-conventional” presentations, accredited by the Faculty of Psychology of the UNLP. One of the objectives of this project is the psychoanalytic exploration of a certain casuistry that distances itself from the Freudian prototype of “petite hystĂ©rie” by the presence of hallucinatory and / or delirious phenomena and by a use of the body that does not fit the clinic and metapsychology of the classic converting symptom. In this context, a case is constructed according to the principles of lacanian-oriented psychoanalysis, which articulate the universality of the confrontation of every subject of language with the real of sex and death, the particularity of the clinical type and the singularity of the subjective response under transfer. It is a young woman who, at the crossroads that implies for all speakers the encounter with the death of the father, responds first with hallucinatory manifestations and physical self-agressions difficult to diagnose, which are then transformed into the speech device and reveal - in their structure and function - a clearly hysterical dimension.
"This research aims to cover a need to be able to
classify according to the funds of eyes in diabetic retinopathy
disease, how to convert to gray tone, perform an equalization,
apply the canny edge highlighting algorithm and apply
morphological operations so that a SOM (self-organization ma p )
neural network can be entered and classified. To achieve this, it is
classified as 0 to diabetic retinopathy, 1 to glaucoma and 3 to
healthy eyes. To corroborate this strategy, a public database of
Fundus-images has been taken, being 45 images of eyes for
training and for tests 15 images that were not part of the training
were used and for the tests 3 images that were not part of the
training were used and each grayscale image is scaled to a
dimension of 256x256 pixels, managing to demonstrate with this
strategy an affectivity of 93.7% certainty in the identification of
class of eye disease
