High Gain Amplifier with Enhanced Cascoded Compensation
A two-stage CMOS operational amplifier with both, gain-boosting and indirect current feedback frequency compensation performed by means of regulated cascode amplifiers, is presented. By using quasi-floating-gate transistors (QFGT) the supply requirements, the number of capacitors and the size of the compensation capacitors respect to other Miller schemes are reduced. A prototype was fabricated using a 0.5 μm technology, resulting, for a load of 45 pF and supply voltage of 1.65 V, in open-loop-gain of 129 dB, 23 MHz of gain-bandwidth product, 60o phase margin, 675 μW power consumption and 1% settling time of 28 ns
Near-barrier Fusion Induced by Stable Weakly Bound and Exotic Halo Light Nuclei
The effect of breakup is investigated for the medium weight
Li+Co system in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier. The strong
coupling of breakup/transfer channels to fusion is discussed within a
comparison of predictions of the Continuum Discretized Coupled-Channels model
which is also applied to He+Co a reaction induced by the borromean
halo nucleus He.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. A talk given at the FUSION06: International

PPAK Wide-field Integral Field Spectroscopy of NGC 628: I. The largest spectroscopic mosaic on a single galaxy
We present a wide-field IFS survey on the nearby face-on Sbc galaxy NGC 628,
comprising 11094 individual spectra, covering a nearly circular field-of-view
of ~6 arcmin in diameter, with a sampling of ~2.7 arcsec per spectrum in the
optical wavelength range (3700--7000 AA). This galaxy is part of the PPAK IFS
Nearby Galaxies Survey, (PINGS, Rosales-Ortega et al. 2009). To our knowledge,
this is the widest spectroscopic survey ever made in a single nearby galaxy. A
detailed flux calibration was applied, granting a spectrophotometric accuracy
of \,0.2 mag.
The age of the stellar populations shows a negative gradient from the inner
(older) to the outer (younger) regions. We found an inversion of this gradient
in the central ~1 kpc region, where a somewhat younger stellar population is
present within a ring at this radius. This structure is associated with a
circumnuclear star-forming region at ~ 500 pc, also found in similar spiral
galaxies. From the study of the integrated and spatially resolved ionized gas
we found a moderate SFR of ~ 2.4 Msun yr. The oxygen abundance shows a a
clear gradient of higher metallicity values from the inner part to the outer
part of the galaxy, with a mean value of 12~+~log(O/H) ~ 8.7. At some specific
regions of the galaxy, the spatially resolved distribution of the physical
properties show some level of structure, suggesting real point-to-point
variations within an individual \hh region. Our results are consistent with an
inside-out growth scheme, with stronger star formation at the outer regions,
and with evolved stellar populations in the inner ones.Comment: 31 pages, 22 Figuras, Accepted for Publishing in MNRAS (corrected

Ground calcium carbonate as a low cost and biosafety excipient for solubility and dissolution improvement of praziquantel
Calcium carbonate is an abundant mineral with several advantages to be a successful carrier to improve oral bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs, such as praziquantel. Praziquantel is an antiparasitic drug classified in group II of the Biopharmaceutical Classification System hence characterized by high-permeability and low-solubility. Therefore, the dissolution rate is the limiting factor for the gastrointestinal absorption that contributes to the low bioavailability. Consequently, the therapeutic dose of the praziquantel must be high and big tablets and capsules are required, which are difficult to swallow, especially for pediatric and elderly patients. Mixtures of praziquantel and calcium carbonate using solid-solid physical mixtures and solid dispersions were prepared and characterized using several techniques (X-ray diffraction differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, laser diffraction, Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopies). Solubility of these formulations evidenced that the solubility of praziquantel-calcium carbonate interaction product increased in physiological media. In vitro dissolution tests showed that the interaction product increased the dissolution rate of the drug in acidic medium. Theoretical models were studied to understand this experimental behavior. Cytotoxicity and cell cycle studies were performed, showing that praziquantel-calcium carbonate physical mixture and interaction product were biocompatible with the HTC116 cells, because it did not produce a decrease in cell viability or alterations in the cell cycle
Discovery of a wide companion near the deuterium burning mass limit in the Upper Scorpius association
We present the discovery of a companion near the deuterium burning mass limit
located at a very wide distance, at an angular separation of 4.6+/-0.1 arcsec
(projected distance of ~ 670 AU) from UScoCTIO108, a brown dwarf of the very
young Upper Scorpius association. Optical and near-infrared photometry and
spectroscopy confirm the cool nature of both objects, with spectral types of M7
and M9.5, respectively, and that they are bona fide members of the association,
showing low gravity and features of youth. Their masses, estimated from the
comparison of their bolometric luminosities and theoretical models for the age
range of the association, are 60+/-20 and 14^{+2}_{-8} MJup, respectively. The
existence of this object around a brown dwarf at this wide orbit suggests that
the companion is unlikely to have formed in a disk based on current planet
formation models. Because this system is rather weakly bound, they did not
probably form through dynamical ejection of stellar embryos.Comment: 10 pages, including 4 figures and 2 table
On Brane Inflation Potentials and Black Hole Attractors
We propose a new potential in brane inflation theory, which is given by the
arctangent of the square of the scalar field. Then we perform an explicit
computation for inflationary quantities. This potential has many nice features.
In the small field approximation, it reproduces the chaotic and MSSM
potentials. It allows one, in the large field approximation, to implement the
attractor mechanism for bulk black holes where the geometry on the brane is de
Sitter. In particular, we show, up to some assumptions, that the Friedman
equation can be reinterpreted as a Schwarzschild black hole attractor equation
for its mass parameter.Comment: 12 pages. Reference updated and minor changes added. Version to

Musashi1 modulates cell proliferation genes in the medulloblastoma cell line Daoy
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Musashi1 (Msi1) is an RNA binding protein with a central role during nervous system development and stem cell maintenance. High levels of Msi1 have been reported in several malignancies including brain tumors thereby associating Msi1 and cancer.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We used the human medulloblastoma cell line Daoy as model system in this study to knock down the expression of Msi1 and determine the effects upon soft agar growth and neurophere formation. Quantitative RT-PCR was conducted to evaluate the expression of cell proliferation, differentiation and survival genes in Msi1 depleted Daoy cells.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We observed that <it>MSI1 </it>expression was elevated in Daoy cells cultured as neurospheres compared to those grown as monolayer. These data indicated that Msi1 might be involved in regulating proliferation in cancer cells. Here we show that shRNA mediated Msi1 depletion in Daoy cells notably impaired their ability to form colonies in soft agar and to grow as neurospheres in culture. Moreover, differential expression of a group of Notch, Hedgehog and Wnt pathway related genes including <it>MYCN</it>, <it>FOS</it>, <it>NOTCH2</it>, <it>SMO</it>, <it>CDKN1A</it>, <it>CCND2</it>, <it>CCND1</it>, and <it>DKK1</it>, was also found in the Msi1 knockdown, demonstrating that Msi1 modulated the expression of a subset of cell proliferation, differentiation and survival genes in Daoy.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our data suggested that Msi1 may promote cancer cell proliferation and survival as its loss seems to have a detrimental effect in the maintenance of medulloblastoma cancer cells. In this regard, Msi1 might be a positive regulator of tumor progression and a potential target for therapy.</p
