Music can be used as a therapeutic tool and has several effects in cognitive and physiologicalfunctions. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of different musical pieces in spatialmemory in adult male rats. A T maze was used to investigate spatial memory, with 2h and6h inter trial interval between training and testing phases. Before training, animals wereexposed to an active or relaxing musical stimulus corresponding to rock and classical pieces. It was found that in the experiment with 2h interval, animals explore more the novel arm incomparison with the other arm, which indicated that animals still had a good spatial memory. This was not observed in rats that were exposed to the relaxing rock piece, which couldindicate that this stimulus diminished memory. With the 6h interval the rats explored botharms equally, except animals that were exposed to the activating rock piece of music whichindicated a slightly enhance in memory. Thus, there were found different effects of musiccorresponding to the time of interval and the stimulus characteristics. This data providesinformation to use music as a possible treatment to modulate memory.Fil: Psyrdellis, Mariana. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Tomographic Simulations of Accretion Disks in Cataclysmic Variables - Flickering and Wind

    Get PDF
Both continuum and emission line flickering are phenomena directly associated with the mass accretion process. In this work we simulate accretion disk Doppler maps including the effects of winds and flickering flares. Synthetic flickering Doppler maps are calculated and the effect of the flickering parameters on the maps is explored. Jets and winds occur in many astrophysical objects where accretion disks are present. Jets are generally absent among the cataclysmic variables (CVs), but there is evidence of mass loss by wind in many objects. CVs are ideal objects to study accretion disks and consequently to study the wind associated with these disks. We also present simulations of accretion disks including the presence of a wind with orbital phase resolution. Synthetic H-alpha line profiles in the optical region are obtained and their corresponding Doppler maps are calculated. The effect of the wind simulation parameters on the wind line profiles is also explored. From this study we verified that optically thick lines and/or emission by diffuse material into the primary Roche lobe are necessary to generate single peaked line profiles, often seen in CVs. The future accounting of these effects is suggested for interpreting Doppler tomography reconstructions.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure

Musical Improvisation: Giving a Look Between Music Therapy and Neuroscience

This paper focuses on improvisation in music therapy and its inclusion in the field of neuro-rehabilitation. This research describes neuro-anatomical correlates and cognitive mechanisms that characterize this creative skill and make it a remarkable technique for rehabilitation patients who have suffered neurological damage.Fil: Diaz Abrahan, Veronika Mariana.

Studies of recruitment in the great skua

This thesis examines different variables affecting recruitment, and provides evidence of recent events affecting a seabird colony. Fieldwork was conducted during 2003-05 in the island of Foula, Shetland. Foula holds the largest colony of great skuas Stercorarius skua in the world; although numbers of breeding pairs in the colony increased rapidly from 1900-70, recently numbers have been decreasing. Data were collected by marking non-breeders and taking individual measures, individuals were followed in subsequent seasons to record their behaviour. An extended database was used to determine how long-term effects of variables such as hatching date, food availability and climate change affect the process of recruitment. The results show that food availability is related to breeding success and early hatching, as well as the probability of returning to the colony to breed. The variable used to quantify climate change (NAO winter index) was not related to recruitment, however it is suspected to influence food abundance. Contrary to expectation, individual quality did not have an effect on the probability of breeding for the first time, and there was no difference in body condition between potential recruits and established breeders; however historic data suggest a difference. The current situation faced by great skuas in the Foula colony may be a determined for the changes in recruitment rates as well as for the parameters that determine the recruitment process. Compared to two decades ago, numbers of pre-breeders have decreased substantially which may give evidence of density dependent effects preventing the addition of new recruits to the colony
