A map for heavy inertial particles in fluid flows

We introduce a map which reproduces qualitatively many fundamental properties of the dynamics of heavy particles in fluid flows. These include a uniform rate of decrease of volume in phase space, a slow-manifold effective dynamics when the single parameter $s$ (analogous of the Stokes number) approaches zero, the possibility of fold caustics in the "velocity field", and a minimum, as a function of $s$, of the Lyapunov (Kaplan-Yorke) dimension of the attractor where particles accumulate.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

Conceptualizing sexual and gender-based violence in European asylum reception centers

Background: Sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) is a major public health problem and a violation of human rights. Refugees, asylum seekers and migrants are exposed to a constant risk for both victimization and perpetration. Yet, in the context of European asylum reception centers (EARF) professionals are also considered to be at risk. Our study explores the conceptualization of SGBV that residents and professionals have in this specific context. Further, we intent to identify key socio-demographic characteristics that are associated with SGBV conceptualization for both groups. Methods: We developed a cross-sectional study using the Senperforto project database. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with residents (n=398) and professionals (n=202) at EARF. A principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted to variables related with knowledge on SGBV. Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were applied to understand if significant statistical association exists with socio-demographic characteristics (significant level 0.5%). Results: The majority of residents were male (64.6%), aged from 19 to 29years (41.4%) and single (66.8%); for professionals the majority were women (56.2%), aged from 30 to 39years (42.3%) and married (56.8%). PCA for residents resulted in 14 dimensions of SGBV representing 83.56% of the total variance of the data, while for professionals it resulted in 17 dimensions that represent 86.92% of the total variance of the data. For both groups differences in SGBV conceptualization were found according to host country, sex, age and marital status. Specific for residents we found differences according to the time of arrival to Europe/host country and type of accommodation, while for professionals differences were found according to legal status and education skills. Conclusion: Residents and professionals described different conceptualization of SGBV, with specific types of SGBV not being recognized as a violent act. Primary preventive strategies in EARF should focus on reducing SGBV conceptualization discrepancies, taking into account socio-demographic characteristics

A Filosofia Jurídico-Política do Krausismo Português

É sempre com agrado que iniciamos a leitura dum texto que trata o krausismo no nosso país, em particular este que foi objecto de dissertação de doutoramento e que, numa análise escorreita, se centra nos três docentes da Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Coimbra que, bem vistas as coisas, foram responsáveis pela magna difusão desta corrente neste “reino de noventa léguas”, epíteto, ao que parece, com que Garrett mimoseava o solo que o viu nascer. Cumpre-nos, em primeiro lugar, fornecer uma breve panorâmica sobre esta produção escrita. Deste modo, temos que asseverar que a obra se inicia por uma introdução onde se procura debater a questão das filosofias nacionais e mais em particular da filosofia krausiana portuguesa, discutindo a pertinência de tal conceito. A esta breve exposição segue-se um sumário bosquejo sobre a época histórica em que esta corrente se insere. Após a citada introdução, entra a autora, seguindo o fio lógico anteriormente delineado, no estudo das correntes krausianas. Neste particular, opta por dedicar grande parte do seu labor à exposição da filosofia de Krause (1781-1832), com um pequeno apartado sobre os seus mais conhecidos discípulos: Ahrens (1808-1874) e Tiberghien (1819-1901). No que concerne ao krausismo espanhol, expõe mais enfaticamente a vida e obra de Julián Sanz del Río (1814-1869), Francisco Giner de los Ríos (1839-1915) e Nicolás Salmeron (1838-1908)

Deus e o Diabo no Grande Sertão: Veredas: Uma Leitura Antimaniqueísta

O presente trabalho, vinculando literatura e filosofia, objetiva analisar a relação dualista existente entre Deus e o Diabo no Grande sertão: veredas, de João Guimarães Rosa, procurando contrastar uma interpretação maniqueísta que comumente se faz, haja vista não estarem bem definidos e delimitados esses dois signos na narrativa em questão. Por meio de repetições contraditórias, Riobaldo, o narrador-protagonista, questiona a existência e a atuação/operância dessas forças que perpassam as mesmas veredas. Deus existe, porém é muito passivo, deixando quase todo o protagonismo para o ser humano, detentor da liberdade. E o Diabo, paradoxalmente, amedronta, mas não existe: a despeito de sugerir uma dimensão metafísico-ontológica, surge como algo demasiado humano, representação das más ações humanas. Inconformado, Riobaldo insiste em reclamar uma justa separação entre o que é bom e o que é mau, mas não consegue, pois está tudo muito misturado. Assim, pretendemos demonstrar que não há maniqueísmo nessa tessitura porque não há um dualismo radical na concepção do Bem e do Mal; não se constituem como absolutamente distinto-antagônicos.Abstract Abstract: The present work, linking literature and philosophy, aims to analyse the dualistic relationship between God and the Devil in Grande Sertão: Veredas, by João Guimarães Rosa, trying to contrast a maniqueist interpretation commonly done, considering that those two signs are not well defined and delimited in the mentioned narrative. Through contradictory repetitions, Riobaldo, the narrator-protagonist, questions the existence and the acting/performance of those forces that pervade the same paths. God exists, but he is very passive, leaving almost all the protagonism for the human being, holder of freedom. And the Devil, paradoxically, scares, but he does not exist: despite suggesting a metaphysical-ontological dimension, he appears as too human, the representation of the bad human actions. Discontented, Riobaldo insists on claiming a fair separation between what is good and what is bad, but he realizes it is impossible, because everything is very mixed. Thus, we intend to demonstrate that there is no manichaeism in that contexture, because there is not a radical dualism in the conception of Good and Evil; they are not absolutely distinct-antagonistic

O mercado de trabalho na perspetiva dos alunos da Universidade dos Açores

Dissertação de Mestrado, Ciências Económicas e Empresariais, 10 de fevereiro de 2017, Universidade dos Açores.Esta dissertação de mestrado aborda quais as perspetivas dos alunos da Universidade dos Açores relativamente ao mercado de trabalho, nomeadamente a aspetos como a remuneração mensal esperada e a sua inserção no mesmo. Para tal, foi realizado um inquérito a vários alunos, de modo a perceber quais as suas expectativas para o futuro aquando do término das suas licenciaturas. Os resultados obtidos para esta amostra indicam que possuir um curso superior é sinónimo de maior empregabilidade e de maior remuneração mensal, e que a maioria dos inquiridos pretende inserir-se no mercado de trabalho da Região Autónoma dos Açores. É importante realçar que estes resultados variam com diversos fatores, como por exemplo o curso que o aluno frequenta.ABSTRACT: This dissertation is about the prospects of University of Azores’ students about labor market, including aspects like their inclusion in it or the wage they expect. In order to understand their expectations about their future when they finish their degrees, was made a survey so some students. The results show us that having a degree is synonymous with a higher employability and better wage. Besides that, the most of respondents wants to start their career in Azores labor market.
