Self-regulation and tobacco use: contributes of the confirmatory factor analysis of the Portuguese version of the short self-regulation questionnaire

    Get PDF
Self-regulation has been one of most studied developmental skills, given its close relation with health and lifestyle, adjustment and resilience and in the prevention of risk behaviours as substance use. Given the lack of studies about self-regulation and tobacco use in Portuguese context, this paper aims to present the results of the confirmatory factor analysis of the Short Self-Regulation Questionnaire (Carey, Neal & Collins, 2004) in our population, exploring the role of self-regulation in tobacco use. To do that, the SSRQ and a socio-demographic questionnaire was administered to a sample of 390 adolescents, mostly females (n= 228, 59.2%), with ages ranging from 15 and 18 years old (M= 16.05, SD=. 865). Results allow us to find a good fit model with good reliability of the SSRQ. Descriptive statistics and differential studies allow us to find differences in impulse control according gender and a negative correlation with age. Results allow us also to verify a negative correlation between self-regulation and onset age of tobacco use and a negative correlation between control impulse and tobacco use. Data is analysed according to the literature and its implications to prevention and further researches are presented.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Recycling of porous bituminous mixtures

    Get PDF
Once flexible pavements reach minimal bearing capacity, their structural rehabilitation is normally undertaken us ing bituminous mixture overlay. The number of layers and the thickness depend of the existing quality of the pavement and of the required quality determined by the rehabilitation program for a next life period. The rehabilitation of a pavement with a porous bituminous mixture wearing course is usually undertaken without any treatment to increase its bearing capacity. The bearing capacity of this type of mixture can be increased by the use of a grout to fill its voids, increasing its resistance. The new material is produced by spreading a grout over the pavement surface, with the help of rubber scrapers, penetrating the voids of the mixture until it reaches the bottom of the layer. The properties of this material are dependent on void connectivity, in order to allow the grout to flow through them. An adequate viscosity of the grout is essential so as to fill the voids completely. The objective of this paper is to analyse the recycling of porous bituminous mixtures, studying the grout and evaluating new mixture properties in terms of stiffness, fatigue life and permanent deformation

    Get PDF

Comunicação oral sob forma de PainelAutonoë madeirensis (Menezes) Speta is a Hyacinthaceae endemic from the Madeira Archipelago (Portugal). From its bulbs we isolated a new compound: 2-(4-aminobenzenamine)-pyrimidine [1]. As pyrimidines have important effects in smooth muscle contraction we investigated the effect of the ethanolic extract and the effect of compound [1] in the rat vas deferens contractility. Compound [1] was obtained from fresh bulbs extracted with ethanol. The ethanolic residue was subjected to fractionation yielding the pure compound [1] identified by spectral data. Using isolated rat vas deferens, dose-response curves were obtained with phenylephrine (Phe) (1.0–32.0 µM) in the absence and in the presence of the ethanolic extract and in the presence of compound [1]. Both ethanolic extract and compound [1] in concentrations devoid of effect shifted to the right the concentration-response curve of Phe, without changing the maximal effect. EC50 values for Phe increased in the presence of compound [1] (5 µM, 50 µM and 100 µM) and were respectively 3 ± 0.8 µM, 4.6 ± 0.7 µM and 3.9 ± 0.6 µM. These values are statistically different from EC50 values obtained in the same vas in control conditions which were respectively 2.2 ±0.8 µM, 1.7 ± 0.2 µM and 1.5 ± 0.1 µM. In the presence of the extract (0.3 and 1.2 mg/ml) the EC50 values for Phe increased significantly and were respectively 4.1 ± 0.8 µM versus 2.2 ± 0.3 µM in control and 4.6 ± 0.9 µM versus 1.7 ± 0.2 µM in control. These results suggest that compound [1] antagonises the α-adrenergic effects of Phe in the rat vas deferens. The Unit of Pharmacology and Pharmacotoxicology, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon supported this research

CFRP group effect and interaction between stirrups and strips on the NSM-shear strengthening of RC beams

    Get PDF
Available experimental research shows that the technique based on installing Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strips into slits opened on the cover concrete of the beam’s lateral faces, designated as Near Surface Mounted (NSM), is very effective to increase the shear resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. However, recent research has revealed that, in terms of NSM shear strengthening effectiveness, a detrimental effect can occur between existing steel stirrups and applied strips, as well as amongst the strips when the distance between strips, sf, is lower than a certain limit. In the present work, a test setup was developed and an experimental program was carried out to assess the influence of both sf and interaction between existing steel stirrups and strips on the shear strengthening of RC beams. The experimental program is described and the main results are presented and analyzed.(13-05-04-FDR-00031

Laboratory tests to characterize the mastic of bituminous mixtures

    Get PDF
The bituminous mixtures are composed by more than one material (i.e. coarse and fine aggregates, filler and bitumen). The components are simultaneously present and contribute to the response of the mixture. Some studies have pointed out the mastic influence in the bituminous mixtures behaviour. The mastic is a mix of bitumen, filler and fine aggregates (maximum dimension of 2 mm) and represents the binder of the coarse aggregates in the bituminous mixtures. This research intends to observe the mechanical behaviour of the mastic as part of the bituminous mixture and it correlation with the bituminous mixtures. The mechanical performance of the mastic was observed in laboratory using tensile, compression and shear tests. Bituminous mixtures with the mastics defined in this work were made and then characterized using the same tests and the results were correlated to the mastic behaviour. The main conclusions explain the influence of the mastic in the performance of a bituminous mixture.(undefined

Numerical simulation of continuous RC slabs strengthened using NSM technique

    Get PDF
The effectiveness of the Near Surface Mounted (NSM) technique for the increase of the flexur-al resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams and slabs was already well proved. The NSM technique is es-pecially adapted to increase the negative bending moments of continuous (two or more spans) RC slabs. However, the influence of the NSM strengthening on the moment redistribution capability of RC structures should be investigated. Recently, an exploratory experimental program was conducted to assess the level of moment redistribution that can be obtained in two span RC slabs strengthened with NSM strips for negative bending moments. To help the preparation of an extensive experimental program in this domain, the values of the parameters of a constitutive model, implemented into a FEM-based computer program, were calibrated from the numerical simulation of these tests. The main aspects of the experimental program are presented, the numerical model is briefly described and the numerical simulations are presented and analyzed. The authors wish to acknowledge the support provided by the Empreiteiros Casais, S&P, Secil (Un-ibetao, Braga) Companies.
