Breaking Kelvin: Circulation conservation and vortex breakup in MHD at low Magnetic Prandtl Number
In this paper we examine the role of weak magnetic fields in breaking
Kelvin's circulation theorem and in vortex breakup in two-dimensional
magnetohydrodynamics for the physically important case of a low magnetic
Prandtl number (low ) fluid. We consider three canonical inviscid solutions
for the purely hydrodynamical problem, namely a Gaussian vortex, a circular
vortex patch and an elliptical vortex patch. We examine how magnetic fields
lead to an initial loss of circulation and attempt to derive scaling
laws for the loss of circulation as a function of field strength and diffusion
as measured by two non-dimensional parameters. We show that for all cases the
loss of circulation depends on the integrated effects of the Lorentz force,
with the patch cases leading to significantly greater circulation loss. For the
case of the elliptical vortex the loss of circulation depends on the total area
swept out by the rotating vortex and so this leads to more efficient
circulation loss than for a circular vortex.Comment: 21 pages, 12 figure
Psychology ethics down under: A survey of student subject pools in Australia
A survey of the 37 psychology departments offering courses accredited by the Australian Psychological Society yielded a 92% response rate. Sixty-eight percent of departments employed students as research subjects, with larger departments being more likely to do so. Most of these departments drew their student subject pools from introductory courses. Student research participation was strictly voluntary in 57% of these departments, whereas 43% of the departments have failed to comply with normally accepted ethical standards. It is of great concern that institutional ethics committees apparently continue to condone, or fail to act against, unethical research practices. Although these committees have a duty of care to all subjects, the final responsibility for conducting research in an ethical manner lies with the individual researcher
Collateral and Debt Maturity Choice. A Signaling Model
This paper derives optimal loan policies under asymmetric information where banks offer loan contracts of long and short duration, backed or unbacked with collateral. The main novelty of the paper is that it analyzes a setting in which high quality firms use collateral as a complementary device along with debt maturity to signal their superiority. The least-cost signaling equilibrium depends on the relative costs of the signaling devices, the difference in firm quality and the proportion of good firms in the market. Model simulations suggest a non-monotonic relationship between firm quality and debt maturity, in which high quality firms have both long-term secured debt and short-term secured or non-secured debt.
Unraveling the Infrared Transient VVV-WIT-06: The Case for the Origin as a Classical Nova

Facility: Magellan: Baade(FIRE).The enigmatic near-infrared transient VVV-WIT-06 underwent a large-amplitude eruption of unclear origin in 2013 July. Based on its light curve properties and late-time post-outburst spectra, various possibilities have been proposed in the literature for the origin of the object, namely a Type I supernova, a classical nova (CN), or a violent stellar merger event. We show that, of these possibilities, an origin in a CN outburst convincingly explains the observed properties of VVV-WIT-06. We estimate that the absolute K-band magnitude of the nova at maximum was M k = -8.2 ±0.5, its distance d = 13.35 ±2.18 kpc, and the extinction A v = 15.0 ±0.55 mag. © 2018. Self-Organized States in Cellular Automata: Exact Solution
The spatial structure, fluctuations as well as all state probabilities of
self-organized (steady) states of cellular automata can be found (almost)
exactly and {\em explicitly} from their Markovian dynamics. The method is shown
on an example of a natural sand pile model with a gradient threshold.Comment: 4 pages (REVTeX), incl. 2 figures (PostScript
Axial Symmetry and Rotation in the SiO Maser Shell of IK Tauri
We observed v=1, J=1-0 43-GHz SiO maser emission toward the Mira variable IK
Tauri (IK Tau) using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). The images resulting
from these observations show that SiO masers form a highly elliptical ring of
emission approximately 58 x 32 mas with an axial ratio of 1.8:1. The major axis
of this elliptical distribution is oriented at position angle of ~59 deg. The
line-of-sight velocity structure of the SiO masers has an apparent axis of
symmetry consistent with the elongation axis of the maser distribution.
Relative to the assumed stellar velocity of 35 km/s, the blue- and red-shifted
masers were found to lie to the northwest and southeast of this symmetry axis
respectively. This velocity structure suggests a NW-SE rotation of the SiO
maser shell with an equatorial velocity, which we determine to be ~3.6 km/s.
Such a NW-SE rotation is in agreement with a circumstellar envelope geometry
invoked to explain previous water and OH maser observations. In this geometry,
water and OH masers are preferentially created in a region of enhanced density
along the NE-SW equator orthogonal to the rotation/polar axis suggested by the
SiO maser velocities.Comment: 17 Pages, 4 figures (2 color); accepted for publication in Ap
Notch/Delta signaling constrains reengineering of pro-T cells by PU.1
PU.1 is essential for early stages of mouse T cell development but antagonizes it if expressed constitutively. Two separable mechanisms are involved: attenuation and diversion. Dysregulated PU.1 expression inhibits pro-T cell survival, proliferation, and passage through ÎČ-selection by blocking essential T cell transcription factors, signaling molecules, and Rag gene expression, which expression of a rearranged T cell antigen receptor transgene cannot rescue. However, Bcl2 transgenic cells are protected from this attenuation and may even undergo ÎČ-selection, as shown by PU.1 transduction of defined subsets of Bcl2 transgenic fetal thymocytes with differentiation in OP9-DL1 and OP9 control cultures. The outcome of PU.1 expression in these cells depends on Notch/Delta signaling. PU.1 can efficiently divert thymocytes toward a myeloid-like state with multigene regulatory changes, but Notch/Delta signaling vetoes diversion. Gene expression analysis distinguishes sets of critical T lineage regulatory genes with different combinatorial responses to PU.1 and Notch/Delta signals, suggesting particular importance for inhibition of E proteins, Myb, and/or Gfi1 (growth factor independence 1) in diversion. However, Notch signaling only protects against diversion of cells that have undergone T lineage specification after Thy-1 and CD25 up-regulation. The results imply that in T cell precursors, Notch/Delta signaling normally acts to modulate and channel PU.1 transcriptional activities during the stages from T lineage specification until commitment
Consumer credit information systems: A critical review of the literature. Too little attention paid by lawyers?
This paper reviews the existing literature on consumer credit reporting, the most extensively used instrument to overcome information asymmetry and adverse selection problems in credit markets. Despite the copious literature in economics and some research in regulatory policy, the legal community has paid almost no attention to the legal framework of consumer credit information systems, especially within the context of the European Union. Studies on the topic, however, seem particularly relevant in view of the establishment of a single market for consumer credit. This article ultimately calls for further legal research to address consumer protection concerns and inform future legislation
