Pancreatic cystosis in cystic fibrosis. Sometimes a bike ride can help you decide
Pancreatic cystosis (PC) is an uncommon manifestation of pancreas involvement in cystic fibrosis (CF), characterized by the presence of multiple macrocysts partially or completely replacing pancreas. Only few reports are available from literature and management (surgery vs follow up) is commonly based on the presence of symptoms or complications due to local mass effect, although evidence-based recommendations are still not available. We here report the case of a young adult CF patient with PC, in which cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) provided important information to be integrated to the radiological finding of inferior vena cava compression by the multicystic pancreas complex. Through the analysis of oxygen kinetic cardiodynamic phase pattern, CPET may be helpful to safely exclude significant mass effects on blood venous return and to improve the decision-making process on whether to consider surgery or not in patients with PC

Matrix Structure Exploitation in Generalized Eigenproblems Arising in Density Functional Theory
In this short paper, the authors report a new computational approach in the
context of Density Functional Theory (DFT). It is shown how it is possible to
speed up the self-consistent cycle (iteration) characterizing one of the most
well-known DFT implementations: FLAPW. Generating the Hamiltonian and overlap
matrices and solving the associated generalized eigenproblems
constitute the two most time-consuming fractions of each iteration. Two
promising directions, implementing the new methodology, are presented that will
ultimately improve the performance of the generalized eigensolver and save

Cardiac oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines response after myocardial infarction
Oxidative stress in heart failure or during ischemia/reperfusion occurs as a result of the excessive generation or accumulation of free radicals or their oxidation products. Free radicals formed during oxidative stress can initiate lipid peroxidation, oxidize proteins to inactive states and cause DNA strand breaks. Oxidative stress is a condition in which oxidant metabolites exert toxic effects because of their increased production or an altered cellular mechanism of protection. In the early phase of acute heart ischemia cytokines have the feature to be functional pleiotropy and redundancy, moreover, several cytokines exert similar and overlapping actions on the same cell type and one cytokine shows a wide range of biological effects on various cell types. Activation of cytokine cascades in the infarcted myocardium was established in numerous studies. In experimental models of myocardial infarction, induction and release of the pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-&alpha (Tumor Necrosis Factor &alpha), IL-1&beta (Interleukin- 1&beta) and IL-6 (Interleukin-6) and chemokines are steadily described. Local vibratory stimulation for temporomandibular disorder myofascial pain treatment: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled preliminary study
Several methods are currently used to manage pain related to temporomandibular disorder (TMD).Vibratory stimulation is applied as a pain treatment for several musculoskeletal disorders, but it has not yet been studied in-depth for TMD symptoms. The aim of this study is to analyse the effectiveness of at-home local vibration therapy (LVT) for the management of TMDs-related myofascial pain.Methods. Fifty-four TMD patients (43 F, 11 M) with an average age of 40.7 (age range: 29-54 yr.) were randomly subdivided into two groups. The study group (AG) received 1 week of at-home LVT treatment with the NOVAFON Pro Sk2/2: 50/100 Hz, bilaterally applied to the pain area for 16 minutes daily. The placebo group (IG) followed the same protocol using inactive devices. Temporomandibular jointpain (TMJ), muscular pain (MM), and headache (HA) were assessed. Pain was evaluated using the visual analogue scale (VAS) before (T0) and after therapy (T1). Statistical analysis and Student's t-tests were applied (statistical significance for P<0.05). Results. AG patients reported decreased average values for all types of pain considered between T0 and T1, with a statistically significant difference for TMJ pain (P<0.05), MM pain, and HA (P<0.001). IG patients reported a no statistically significant decrease in the average values of MM pain and an increase in the average valuesof TMJ pain and HA. Conclusion. The study supports the use of local vibration therapy in the control of TMD-related TMJ pain, local muscular pain, and headache
A case of acute aortic dissection type b associated with cushing's syndrome
We report a case of a 63-year-old man, with a previous history of hypertension and glucose intolerance associated troncular obesity that was emergently admitted to our Institution for evaluation of a severe, constant posterior chest pain which radiated anteriorly and dyspnoea with a suspected diagnosis of acute aortic dissection. A CT scan of thorax and abdomen demonstrated a dissection starting just below left succlavian artery and extending downward to the left renal artery, involving the celiac tripod and superior mesenteric artery. The dissection was classified as Stanford B, De Bakey III. Moreover, CT scan of abdomen revealed incidentally a left adrenal tumor of 25 mm of diameter. An emergent prosthetic graft was placed just below the origin of the left succlavian artery up-to the diaphragmatic hiatus. Furthermore, a diagnostic evaluation of the mass revealed an increase of cortisol production, and a diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome was done and the patient underwent an adrenalectomy via laparotomic approach. First report of caprine abortions due to Chlamydia abortus in Argentina.
Infectious abortions of goats in Argentina are mainly associated with brucellosis and toxoplasmosis. In this paper, we describe an abortion outbreak in goats caused by Chlamydia abortus. Seventy out of 400 goats aborted. Placental smears stained with modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain showed many chlamydia-like bodies within trophoblasts. One stillborn fetus was necropsied and the placenta was examined. No gross lesions were seen in the fetus, but the inter-cotyledonary areas of the placenta were thickened and covered by fibrino-suppurative exudate. The most consistent microscopic finding was found in the placenta and consisted of fibrinoid necrotic vasculitis, with mixed inflammatory infiltration in the tunica media. Immunohistochemistry of the placenta was positive for Chlamydia spp. The results of polymerase chain reaction targeting 23S rRNA gene performed on placenta were positive for Chlamydia spp. An analysis of 417 amplified nucleotide sequences revealed 99% identity to those of C. abortus pm225 (GenBank AJ005617) and pm112 (GenBank AJ005613) isolates. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of abortion associated with C. abortus in Argentina
TESTING THE EFFICACY OF BRAIN CHOLESTEROL SUPPLEMENTATION AS A POSSIBLE THERAPEUTIC APPROACH FOR HUNTINGTON'S DISEASE
Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive, fatal, adult-onset, neurodegenerative disorder caused by
an expanded CAG repeat in the huntingtin gene, which encodes an abnormally long polyglutamine
repeat in the huntingtin protein. Clinical features of Huntington's disease include progressive motor
dysfunction, cognitive decline, and psychiatric disturbance. Currently, the available drugs are used
only for symptomatic management of Huntington's disease, but there is no effective therapy.
Several studies indicate that brain cholesterol biosynthesis is reduced in several HD rodent models
(Valenza et al. 2005) (Valenza et al. 2007) (Valenza et al. 2010) and data from HD patients also
suggested a similar reduction (Leoni et al. 2008) (Leoni et al. 2013).
This dysfunction may be detrimental for neuronal cells, especially given that locally synthesized
cholesterol is implicated in neurite outgrowth, synapses formation and maintenance, synaptic
activity and integrity, and optimal neurotransmitter release (Pfrieger et al. 2003).
Based on these evidences, we supposed that in vivo supplying of exogenous cholesterol could
rescue aspects of neuronal dysfunction. To verify our hypothesis we used different approaches to
deliver exogenous cholesterol to the brain of R6/2 mice (Mangiarini et al. 1996), since peripheral
cholesterol is not able to cross the blood brain barrier (BBB).
In our first study, the delivery of cholesterol via brain-permeable polymeric nanoparticles (g7-NPs-
Chol) rescued synaptic communication, protected from cognitive decline and partially improved
global activity in HD mice (Valenza et al. 2015). In a second study we tested the efficacy of
increasing doses of cholesterol directly infused into mouse brain by osmotic minipumps. Results
demonstrated that high amounts of cholesterol have to be delivered to observe both cognitive and
motor functional recovery in R6/2 mice. More recently, we started to investigate a third innovative
non-invasive strategy based on intranasal delivery of cholesterol and preliminary results will be
discussed
UVES observations of QSO 0000-2620: oxygen and zinc abundances in the Damped Ly-alpha galaxy at z_abs=3.3901
Observations of the QSO 0000-2620 with UVES spectrograph at the 8.2m ESO
KUEYEN telescope are used for abundance analysis of the damped Ly-alpha system
at z_{abs}=3.3901. Several Oxygen lines are identified in the Ly_alpha forest
and a measure for the oxygen abundance is obtained at [O/H]=-1.85 +/- 0.1 by
means of the unsaturated OI 925 A and OI 950 A lines. This represents the most
accurate O measurement in a damped Ly_alpha galaxy so far. We have also
detected ZnII 2026 A and CrII 2056, 2062 A redshifted at about 8900 A and found
abundances [Zn/H] = -2.07 +/- 0.1 and [Cr/H]=-1.99 +/- 0.1. Furthermore,
previous measurements of Fe, Si, Ni and N have been refined yielding
[Fe/H]=-2.04 +/- 0.1, [Si/H]=-1.90 +/- 0.1, [Ni/H]=-2.27 +/- 0.1, and
[N/H]=-2.68 +/- 0.1. The abundance of the non-refractory element zinc is the
lowest among the damped Ly-alpha systems showing that the associated
intervening galaxy is indeed in the early stages of its chemical evolution. The
fact that the Zn abundance is identical to that of the refractory elements Fe
and Cr suggests that dust grains have not formed yet. In this Damped Ly-alpha
system the observed [O,S,Si/Zn,Fe,Cr] ratios, in whatever combination are
taken, are close to solar (i.e 0.1-0.2 dex) and do not show the
[alpha-element/Fe] enhancement observed in Milky Way stars of comparable
metallicity. The observed behavior supports a galaxy evolution model
characterized by either episodic or low star formation rate rather than a
Milky-Way-type evolutionary model.Comment: Accepted by Ap
