    Pancreatic cystosis (PC) is an uncommon manifestation of pancreas involvement in cystic fibrosis (CF), characterized by the presence of multiple macrocysts partially or completely replacing pancreas. Only few reports are available from literature and management (surgery vs follow up) is commonly based on the presence of symptoms or complications due to local mass effect, although evidence-based recommendations are still not available. We here report the case of a young adult CF patient with PC, in which cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) provided important information to be integrated to the radiological finding of inferior vena cava compression by the multicystic pancreas complex. Through the analysis of oxygen kinetic cardiodynamic phase pattern, CPET may be helpful to safely exclude significant mass effects on blood venous return and to improve the decision-making process on whether to consider surgery or not in patients with PC

    High Voltage System for the Generation of High Energy X-rays: synchronization and improvement

    The x-ray (3 keV - 25 keV) are produced by high voltage discharge applied inside plasma source interaction chamber by focusing a laser beam. The control system is based on a high voltage power supply and an LC-inverter circuit with Thyratron, the generation of the trigger signal increasing the efficiency of the system. Analysis of the system, a possible layout with solid-state element and preliminary results of synchronization between high voltage discharge and Laser beam Nd-YAG are presented and discussed

    Cap rock efficiency of geothermal systems in fold-and-thrust belts: Evidence from paleo-thermal and structural analyses in Rosario de La Frontera geothermal area (NW Argentina)

    Cap rock characterization of geothermal systems is often neglected despite fracturing may reduce its efficiency and favours fluid migration. We investigated the siliciclastic cap rock of Rosario de La Frontera geothermal system (NW Argentina) in order to assess its quality as a function of fracture patterns and related thermal alteration. Paleothermal investigations (XRD on fine-grained fraction of sediments, organic matter optical analysis and fluid inclusions on veins) and 1D thermal modelling allowed us to distinguish the thermal fingerprint associated to sedimentary burial from that related to fluid migration. The geothermal system is hosted in a Neogene N-S anticline dissected by high angle NNW- and ENE-striking faults. Its cap rock can be grouped into two quality categories: • rocks acting as good insulators, deformed by NNW–SSE and E–W shear fractures, NNE-SSW gypsum- and N-S-striking calcite-filled veins that developed during the initial stage of anticline growth. Maximum paleo-temperatures (< 60 °C) were experienced during deposition to folding phases.• rocks acting as bad insulators, deformed by NNW-SSE fault planes and NNW- and WNW-striking sets of fractures associated to late transpressive kinematics. Maximum paleo-temperatures higher than about 115 °C are linked to fluid migration from the reservoir to surface (with a reservoir top at maximum depths of 2.5 km) along fault damage zones.This multi-method approach turned out to be particularly useful to trace the main pathways of hot fluids and can be applied in blind geothermal systems where either subsurface data are scarce or surface thermal anomalies are lacking.Fil: Maffucci, R..     An Innovative Lens Type FinLine to Microstrip Transition

    Due to the disadvantages of vacuum tubes in terms of warm-up time, size, and highvoltage needs, solid-state power amplifiers (SSPAs) with gallium nitride (GaN) monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) are the key solution for power levels up to some kilowatts in continuous wave. An SSPA is the most convenient solution for these RF power levels due to its low weight, small size, negligible warm-up time, low-voltage operation, and high reliability. Spatial power amplifiers (SPAs) combining techniques are the best candidates for SSPAs due to the intrinsic low attenuation in dividing and combining functions. SPAs mainly use two types of probes: transverse and longitudinal, such as FinLines. This paper describes a broadband FinLine to microstrip (FLuS) transition based on dielectric lens theory. Comparative simulations with traditional FinLine transitions show a significant improvement in matching performances and a very significant increase in mechanical resistance of the transition. The proposed innovative FLuS uses a substrate shaping designed according to dielectric lens theory. Frequency simulations of a FLuS inside the WR22 waveguide are shown. These evidence the better performances of this transition than the classic FLuS transition using quarter-wave transformer (QWT) matching. A Q band spatial power combiner with dielectric lens FLuS was made and measured, showing the excellent performances of this innovative FLuS transition

    Unexpected death of a ventilator-dependent amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patient

    Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal, progressive, neurodegenerative disease and most patients affected die of respiratory compromise and/or pneumonia within 2â3 years of diagnosis. As ALS progresses, ventilator assistance is required. In the end stages of the disease, patients suffer from respiratory failure and may become ventilator-dependent. Deaths due to malfunction of mechanical ventilators are reported but there are very few forensic autopsy records. We report the case of a 69-year-old ALS female ventilator-dependent, trachostomised patient who was found dead by her husband, with the ventilator in âstand-byâ mode. Method: A forensic autopsy was performed. Samples of internal organs were taken for histological and toxicological examination. The ventilator internal memory was also analysed and tested in order to find possible malfunction. Results: Gross examination did not reveal any sign of trauma but showed brain and lung congestion. Pulmonary histological examination revealed thickening of peribronchial interstitial space, alveolar over-distension, break of inter-alveolar walls and diffuse alveolar haemorrhages. Focal microhemorrhages were also detected in other organs. Analysis of the ventilator internal memory showed that during the night of death, there had been several voltage drops. Specific tests revealed malfunction of the internal battery which was unable to provide the necessary voltage, as a consequence the ventilator switched off, stopping ventilation. Battery malfunction reduced the volume of the ventilator alarm, which was not heard by the caregiver. Conclusion: Histological pattern, with acute pulmonary emphysema and focal polivisceral haemorrhages, is strongly suggestive of a death due to âacuteâ asphyxia. The authors also discuss the need for strict supervision and follow up of these ventilatory dependent patients and their devices. Resumo: Introdução: A Esclerose Lateral Amiotrófica (ELA) é uma doença fatal, progressiva e neurodegenerativa e a maioria dos doentes afectados morrerão de falha respiratória e/ou pneumonia 2 ou 3 anos após o diagnóstico. à medida que a ELA progride torna-se necessária a assistência ventilatória. Nos estágios finais da doença, os doentes sofrem de insuficiência respiratória e podem tornar-se dependentes do ventilador. São conhecidas mortes devido ao mau funcionamento de ventiladores mecânicos mas existem poucos registos forenses de tal situação. Relatamos o caso de uma doente de 69 anos com ELA, traqueostomizada e dependente do ventilador, que foi encontrada morta pelo seu marido com o ventilador em modo de espera («stand-by»). Método: Foi realizada uma autópsia forense. Foram recolhidas amostras dos órgãos internos para exame toxicológico e histológico. A memória interna do ventilador foi também analisada e testada de modo a descobrir uma possível avaria. Resultados: O exame macroscópico não revelou qualquer sinal de trauma mas indicou congestão cerebral e pulmonar. O exame pulmonar histológico revelou o espessamento do espaço intersticial peribrônquico, sobredistensão alveolar, quebra de paredes interalveolares e hemorragias alveolares difusas. Foram detetadas micro-hemorragias focais noutros órgãos. A análise da memória interna do ventilador mostrou que, durante a noite da morte, houve diversas quedas de tensão. Testes específicos revelaram o mau funcionamento da bateria interna que não conseguiu fornecer a tensão necessária, consequentemente o ventilador desligou-se, parando a ventilação. O mau funcionamento da bateria reduziu o volume do alarme do ventilador, que não foi ouvido pelo prestador de cuidados. Conclusão: O padrão histológico, com enfisema pulmonar agudo e hemorragias focais poliviscerais, é fortemente indicador de morte devido a asfixia «aguda». Os autores discutem também a necessidade de uma supervisão rigorosa e seguimento destes doentes dependentes do ventilador e dos seus equipamentos.     Virtual prototype of innovative ka-band power amplifier based on waveguide polarizer

    This paper outlines an innovative approach to design a spatial power-combining structure based on waveguide polarizers. It presents the 3D CAD model of the new structure with the transversal probes and considerations in positioning and optimization of them. Exploiting the transformation of the dominant input mode TE10 into an elliptically polarized wave, provided by the polarizer, it has been possible to achieve a division of power by eight, completely carried out in space. With the insertion of the transversal probes made by microstrips, the RF signal can be sent to the MMIC solid state power amplifiers, and then recombined in the output section. Thanks to the large number of power divisions made in the waveguide section, the insertion loss of the power divider/combiner is less than 0.5 dB across the 32-34 GHz band, achieving a great power density as well. At the authors’ best knowledge, this is the first work where a waveguide polarizer is used in Spatial Power Combining technology

    Performances of infrared emitters applied to the porous thin materials drying

    Drying of solids is one of the oldest and most common unit operations found in diverse processes. In this paper the drying of hygroscopic textile materials is discussed. The authors have previously investigated the drying kinetic of different fabrics dried by a hot air jet. In this paper a comparison between the convective and electric IR drying is made. In particular two fabrics with fibers which show a different hygroscopic behaviour are analysed: wool and cellulose/cotton. Unlike the convective drying, IR drying is weakly affected by the radiation properties and by the hygroscopic behaviour of the two fabrics. This is likely due to a better diffusion of the heat flux, which is constant over the entire drying surface in the case of IR heating, and produces unexpected results on the nondimensional kinetic parameter (characteristic curve). Wool shows a complete different characteristic curve if dried with IR or with convective flow. The better performances have been reached with MW emitter, but it has been observed that this advantage decreases with the distance of the source from the surface to be dried

    Innovative Mode Enhancement for High Power Coaxial Vircators

    The size and weight of a high power microwave (HPM) source can make a difference in strategic use. The compactness of the virtual cathode oscillator (vircator) is undoubtedly the most significant advantage of this device. Civil industry and agriculture can use it to treat objects, food, and soils for disinfestation and disinfection. Vircators could also generate electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) to force the arrest of vehicles and drones; EMPs could inhibit or activate improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The coaxial type vircator is a highly compact device. Due to its symmetric geometry, coaxial vircator is typically designed to work with a TM01 mode. Still, when radiated into space, this mode gives maximum RF energy away from the antenna axis, a situation not desired. Instead, the TE11 is convenient in applications involving precise antenna pointing since this mode gives a maximum RF energy precisely aligned to the antenna axis. By studying Mathieu functions applied to elliptical waveguides, we improve the performances of a TE11 mode coaxial vircator using an elliptic drift tube (EDT). This is a completely innovative solution to reduce the mode competition inside the coaxial vircator. The rms and peak output power efficiency of the EDT coaxial vircator were measured on the TE11 mode, obtaining the values of 6.1% and 10%, respectively, with a peak power of 450 MW in a highly compact device
