    Entry modes in reshoring strategies: An empirical analysis

    Abstract The Entry Mode (EM) choice is a fundamental issue in reshoring initiatives. Despite several authors have studied the determinants of offshoring EM, no study has investigated so far the factors affecting the reshoring EM and its relation with the offshoring EM. The purpose of this paper is to examine which factors influence entry mode choice in reshoring initiatives. We develop a conceptual framework that explains the reshoring EM in terms of country-, industry-, firm- and project-specific factors, in addition to the offshoring EM choice. Next, we test this model by using a sample of 677 cross-industry and cross-country reshoring projects. Based on the results, we find that offshoring EM significantly constrains the subsequent reshoring EM. More in detail, firms adopting offshore insourcing entry modes tend to retain these modes in reshoring. Furthermore, reshoring EM is explained by industry- and project-specific factors, while offshoring EM is influenced by a broader set of industry-, country-, and firm-specific factors.     Offshoring and backshoring: A multiple case study analysis

    Abstract Motivations underscoring offshoring and backshoring are typically investigated as separate entities in the academic literature. This separation undermines a deeper comprehension of the two phenomena, and implicitly denies the conceptualization of backshoring as a possible step of the firm internationalization process. Our paper seeks to fill this gap by (1) understanding the relations (if any) among offshoring and backshoring motivations at firm level; (2) exploring whether backshoring is a "failure" of the offshoring initiative, or rather the evolution of the firm's competitive and location strategies. A content-based literature review provides the base for the identification of the key motives for offshoring and backshoring, which are then organised using a theory-grounded framework. Next, we conduct a multiple case study analysis based on four companies, searching for common patterns in offshoring and subsequent backshoring initiatives. Cases allow understanding how the motivations (Why) connect with the governance modes (How), and the location choice (Where). Building on the case findings, the paper presents some propositions for future empirical research

    Study of the effect of different breast implant surfaces on capsule formation and host inflammatory response in an animal model

    Background: Breast implants are biomaterials eliciting a physiological and mandatory foreign body response. Objectives: The authors designed an animal study to investigate the impact of different implant surfaces on the formation of the periprosthetic capsule, the inflammatory response, and the cellular composition. Methods: The authors implanted 1 scaled-down version of breast implants by different manufactures on 70 female Sprague Dawley rats. Animals were divided into 5 groups of 14 animals. Group A received a smooth implant (Ra ≈ 0.5 µm) according to the ISO 14607-2018 classification, Group B a smooth implant (Ra ≈ 3.2 µm), Group C a smooth implant (Ra ≈ 5 µm), Group D a macrotextured implant (Ra ≈ 62 µm), and Group E a macrotextured implant (Ra ≈ 75 µm). At 60 days, all animals received a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and 35 animals were killed and their capsules sent for histology (capsule thickness, inflammatory infiltrate) and immunohistochemistry analysis (cellular characterization). The remaining animals repeated the MRI at 120 days and were killed following the same protocol. Results: MRI showed a thinner capsule in the smooth implants (Groups A-C) at 60 days (P < .001) but not at 120 days (P = .039), confirmed with histology both at 60 days (P = .005) and 120 days (P < .001). Smooth implants (Groups A-C) presented a mild inflammatory response at 60 days that was maintained at 120 days and a high M2-Macrophage concentration (anti-inflammatory). Conclusions: Our study confirms that smooth implants form a thinner capsule, inferior inflammatory infiltrate, and a cellular composition that indicates a mild host inflammatory response.     "Mi voglio bene": a pediatrician-based randomized controlled trial for the prevention of obesity in Italian preschool children

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The first years of life are crucial to start preventive interventions that can have an impact on lifestyle and later overweight and obesity. Under the Italian National Health System (INHS), children are cared for by family pediatricians who perform health balances at regular intervals. The Italian Society of Preventive and Social Pediatrics (SIPPS) has designed a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate the effectiveness of family pediatricians for the prevention of childhood obesity in preschool children. We report the rationale and protocol of such trial, named the "Mi voglio bene" ("I love myself") study.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>"Mi voglio bene" is a parallel-arm RCT. Family pediatricians willing to participate to the trial will be randomly assigned to a control group and to an experimental group. The control group will provide the usual standard of care while the experimental group will implement 10 preventive actions (promotion of breastfeeding, avoidance of solid foods, control of protein intake, avoidance of sugar-sweetened beverages, avoidance of bottle, active means of transportation, identification of early adiposity rebound, limitation of television viewing, promotion of movement, and teaching portion size) at 10 time points during a 6-yr follow-up. The main outcome measures is the prevalence of overweight and obesity at 6 years of age. The experimental intervention is expected to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity from 25% to 20% and the study requires a total of 3610 children. Each pediatrician will enroll 30 consecutive newborns into the study so that a total of 120 pediatricians will participate to the study.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>"Mi voglio bene" is expected to provide important information for the INHS and possibly other institutional child care settings about the effectiveness of a pediatrician-based approach to the prevention of childhood obesity. We published this study protocol with the aim of opening a discussion with all people interested in fighting childhood obesity and to receive useful criticisms.</p

    Sowing date, genotype choice, and water environment control soybean yields in central Argentina

    Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is one of the most important crops worldwide, and Argentina is the third largest global grain producer and the worlds´ largest meal exporter. Under the continuous challenge of increasing crop yields, especially in the central temperate region of the country, there is a growing need to optimize management in relation to the environment that each specific farm and paddock presents. Understanding the impact of available technologies and management options can help optimize crop design. Here, we identify and quantify the effect of the most relevant variables affecting soybean yield by analyzing a database that includes 53 field trials with four common commercial genotypes, reporting 50 management and environmental variables. Linear mixed-effect models revealed that two management decisions (genotype and sowing date selection) and three environmental variables (rainfall during the reproductive crop period from R1 to R7, soil type [Hapludoll vs. Argiudoll], and water table presence above or below 2 m of depth from the surface) helped explain ∼40% of total yield variability, which ranged from 1,675 to 7,226 kg ha−1 and averaged 5,133 kg ha−1. Water table presence generated higher and more stable yields particularly in coarse-textured Hapludolls and under low-rainfall conditions. Results highlight specific management and environmental conditions that affect soybean crop yields in the region, pointing to effective pathways toward yield gap reductions.Fil: Vitantonio Mazzini, Lucas Nicolás.     Development of a Novel Device for Decompressive Craniectomy: An Experimental and Cadaveric Study and Preliminary Clinical Application

    Background: Decompressive craniectomy is an intervention of established efficacy in patients with intractable cerebral edema. Objective: To evaluate a new device used in alternative to decompressive craniectomy. This device is designed to perform an augmentative craniotomy by keeping the bone flap elevated using specific cranial suspension titanium plates and giving the brain enough room to swell. Methods: We tested the mechanical characteristics of the cranial brackets on dried skulls, on 3D-printed skull models, and on a preserved cadaver head. The resistance of the device was examined through dynamometric testing, and the feasibility of the surgical technique, including the suspension of the bone flap and the skin closure, was investigated on the cadaveric model. A preliminary clinical series of 2 patients is also reported. Results: The laboratory tests have shown that this system allows an adequate expansion of the intracranial volume and it could withstand a force up to 637 ± 13 N in the synthetic model and up to 658 ± 9 N in the human skull without dislocation or failure of the brackets nor fractures of the bone ridges. Preliminary application in the clinical setting has shown that augmentative craniotomy is effective in the control of intracranial hypertension and could reduce the costs and complications associated with the classical decompressive craniectomy technique. Conclusion: Preliminary laboratory and clinical results show augmentative craniotomy to be a promising, alternative technique to decompressive craniectomy. Further clinical studies will be needed to validate its efficacy

    Coffee Restores Expression of lncRNAs Involved in Steatosis and Fibrosis in a Mouse Model of NAFLD

    Background and aim: Coffee intake exerts protective effects against non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), although without fully cleared mechanisms. In this study we aimed to assess whether coffee consumption may influence the expression of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the liver. Methods: C57BL/6J mice were fed a 12-week standard diet (SD), high-fat diet (HFD) or HFD plus decaffeinated coffee solution (HFD + coffee). Expression of specific lncRNAs involved in NAFLD was analyzed by real-time PCR. For the most differentially expressed lncRNAs, the analysis was also extended to their mRNA targets. Results: Decaffeinated coffee intake reduced body weight gain, prevented NAFLD, lowered hyperglycemia and hypercholesterolemia. NAFLD was associated with lower hepatic expression of Gm16551, a lncRNA inhibiting de novo lipogenesis, and higher expression of H19, a lncRNA promoting fibrogenesis. Coffee intake restored Gm16551 to levels observed in lean mice and downregulated gene expression of its targets acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase 1 and stearoyl coenzyme A desaturase 1. Furthermore, coffee consumption markedly decreased hepatic expression of H19 and of its target gene collagen alpha-1(I) chain; consistently, in mice fed HFD + coffee liver expression of αSMA protein returned to levels of mice fed SD. Expression of lncRNA involved in circadian clock such as fatty liver-related lncRNA 1 (FLRL1) and fatty liver-related lncRNA 2 (FLRL2) were upregulated by HFD and were also modulated by coffee intake. Conclusion: Hepatoprotective effects of coffee may be depending on the modulation of lncRNAs involved in key pathways of NAFLD onset and progression

    The prevalence of specific phobia by age in an Italian nationwide survey: How much does it affect the quality of life?

    Introduction: The study aimed to see if a community survey conducted by clinical interviewers with semi-structured psychiatric interviews shows lifetime prevalence rates of Specific Phobia (SP) similar to those found by surveys carried out by lay interviewers and if the high level of impairment found in SP may be confirmed. Methods: This is a community survey on an Italian nationwide sample randomly selected from registers of municipalities. Tools: semi-structured ANTAS psychiatric interview derived from the SCID-DSM-IV, carried out by clinicians (psychologists or physicians); Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) as a measure of Quality of Life (QoL). Analyses: means of the χ2 test odds ratios were adopted to test several associations regarding SP prevalence. One-way ANOVA was used to compare different groups on attributable burden due to SP and/or other disorders in worsening QoL. Results: The lifetime prevalence of SP was 2.3%. No difference was found by age class. Females showed more than twice the frequency of males (p&lt;0.0001). The disorders showing the closest association with SP were: social phobia (OR=17.53); general anxiety disorder (OR=11.57); anorexia (OR=11.13) and agoraphobia (OR=10.03), but also obsessive compulsive disorders (OR=8.8), eating disorders (OR=7.2), panic disorder (OR=5.9), post-traumatic stress disorder (OR=5.8), and major depressive disorder (OR=4.8) presented an association that achieved statistical significance. The QoL of people with SP and at least one disorder of anxiety, mood or eating in comorbidity, measured as a score at SF12, was worse than controls without SP (p &lt;0.001) but that of people with SP without co-morbidity was not (p = 0.809). Conclusion: An epidemiological study conducted by clinical interviewers through semi-structured interviews appears to re-dimension the impact of SP, at least from the public health perspective. Future prospective studies will better clarify the role of SP in the context of anxiety disorders

    Technology and technique for left ventricular assist device optimization: A Bi-Tech solution

    Background We investigated the synergistic effect of the new cone-bearing design of Jarvik 2000 (Jarvik Heart Inc., NY) together with a minimally-invasive approach to outcomes of LVAD patients. Methods We retrospectively reviewed all patients from 5 institutions involved in the Jarvik 2000 Italian Registry, from October 2008 to October 2016. Patients were divided into three groups according to pump design and implantation technique: pin-bearing design and conventional approach (Group 1); cone-bearing and conventional approach (Group 2); cone-bearing and minimally-invasive implantation (Group 3). Results A total of 150 adult patients with end-stage heart failure were enrolled: 26 subjects in Group 1, 74 in Group 2, and 50 in Group 3. Nineteen patients (73%) in Group 1, 51 (69%) in Group 2, and 36 (72%) in Group 3 were discharged. During follow-up, 22 patients underwent transplantation, while in 3 patients the LVAD was explanted. The overall 1-year survival was 58 +/- 10%, 64 +/- 6%, and 74% +/- 7% in Groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively (p = 0.034). The competing-risks-adjusted cumulative incidence rate for adverse events was 42.1 [27-62.7] per 100 patient-years in Group 1, 35.4 [25.3-48.2] in Group 2, and 22.1 [12.4-36.4] in Group 3 (p = 0.046 for Group 1 vs. 3). Conclusions The association of the modern cone-bearing configuration of Jarvik 2000 and minimally invasive surgery improved survival and minimized the risk for cardiovascular events, as a result of combining technology and technique
