The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of âDialoguesâ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with âothersâ, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, âdialogueâ as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title âtranslatedâ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences
The Rock Church of San Micidiario of the Pantalica Site and 3DLAB VR/ARâProject
This work gives the first results of a research project funded by the Sicily region, aimed at the creation of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) models, in the context of some country of the territory of Sicily with UNESCO listed monuments. This project sees the collaboration between some universities on the island and some partners who produce software and automated robotics systems and AI. Below are the first results of the workflow produced for the creation of 3D models of one of the three rock churches of the necropolis of Pantalica: an Unesco site. It also describes the process underway to get to the creation of VR and AR models to be used with three different levels of immersive reality: normal commercial viewers, different types of Oculus viewers, or in special virtual rooms Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE), already existing or created within the project
Avio Infrared Technologies Co., Ltd).Infrared thermography, as known, allows the analysis of structural building elements on the basis
of the identification of areas at different temperatures and possible heat transfer processes in close
relationship with the response of the materials used to thermal stresses to which they are interested. The thermal images, especially if acquired through instrumentation characterized by high resolution
and sensitivity, allow to put in evidence, in addition to the presence of anomalies associated
with processes of alteration and degradation of the materials used, any architectural transformations
occurred in the history of the article and, in particular, original characters constructive
hidden by later interventions.
Based on these assumptions, the thermographic method has been applied to the study of some of
the historical and religious buildings in the country of Siliqua (south-western Sardinia): the Church
of San Giorgio, the Church of SantâAnna and the Church of Santa Margherita. The research,
in particular, has made it possible to highlight the structure and texture of the main elevations of
walls, now covered by plaster, and, on the basis of historical documents and photographs of the
past, adjust the thermal response acquired with the specific materials used.
The study has been carried through non-destructive telemetry investigations through the use of
Thermal Imaging Camera IR Thermo Tracer TH9260 (NEC Avio Infrared Technologies Co., Ltd)

Digital and representation: the second line and the forgotten castle of Fiumedinisi
[EN] The Belvedere Castle of Fiumedinisi (ME) belongs to that historical heritage of Sicily characterized by
abandoned and forgotten military architecture. Along the Ionian coast the defensive problem has been
particularly felt over time, due to the proximity of the Turkish coast, the Middle East and the African
one. The first defensive line was the coastal one, defined by principals placed on the sea in a strategic
position for direct control of the coast. They were part of this group: the Maniace castle of Syracuse,
that of Augusta, of Brucoli, of Catania, of Acicastello, the Tocco of Acireale, Schisò in the territory of
Giardini, Capo Sant'Alessio, the Saracen Tower of Roccalumera, Capo Grosso in Ali , San Salvatore in
Messina. Along the eastern side of the Peloritani mountains from Calatabiano to Messina, the island's
defensive strategy also included a second line of fortifications, which controlled a more distant horizon
from their position. These include the castle of Calatabiano, Taormina, Castelmola, Forza dâAgrò, Savoca, Fiumedinisi, Scaletta Zanclea, Santo Stefano di Briga, Matagrifone. Among them, the Belvedere
castle of Fiumedinisi, at a critical distance from the village, so as to be in a state of neglect, among those
listed is that which is in the worst conditions. In stark contrast to the dignity and history of the site and
territory of Fiumedinisi, dating back to the Greek period. In this work we propose the survey of the castle with digital, photogrammetric technologies, Structure From Motion (SFM) and dense matching, to
arrive at a 3D documentation and graphic drawings, considering that to date there are no significant scientific surveys and representations of this abandoned fortress.
