What does someone's gender identity signal to employers?
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the mechanisms underlying hiring discrimination against transgender men. Design/methodology/approach The authors conduct a scenario experiment with final-year business students in which fictitious hiring decisions are made about transgender or cisgender male job candidates. More importantly, these candidates are scored on statements related to theoretical reasons for hiring discrimination given in the literature. The resulting data are analysed using a bivariate analysis. Additionally, a multiple mediation model is run. Findings Suggestive evidence is found for co-worker and customer taste-based discrimination, but not for employer taste-based discrimination. In addition, results show that transgender men are perceived as being in worse health, being more autonomous and assertive, and have a lower probability to go on parental leave, compared with cisgender men, revealing evidence for (positive and negative) statistical discrimination. Originality/value This study innovates in being one of the first to explore the relative empirical importance of dominant (theoretical) explanations for hiring discrimination against transgender men. Thereby, the authors take the logical next step in the literature on labour market discrimination against transgender individuals
On sediment dispersal in the Whitsand Bay Marine Conservation Zone
Some ‘thought experiment’ modelling results and interpretations of data and theory are
presented to investigate the possibility that Whitsand Bay, and its recently (2013) designated
Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ), might have been affected in the past both by intrusion of
dredge-spoil sediments from the now-closed disposal site located close to the seaward
boundary of the MCZ and by suspended sediment and low salinity waters from the adjacent
Tamar Estuary and Plymouth Sound. The schematic modelling work (2D and 3D) is
considered to provide approximate indications rather than precise predictions. The
component of Tamar waters present within the MCZ is computed to be small (<10%). The
location of the dredge-spoil (model tracer/particle-release) source point is crucially important
to the intrusion of tracer within the MCZ. Modelled bedload sediment transport from the
disposal site toward or away from the MCZ occurs with high waves and is dependent on
near-bed tidal, wave and wind-driven currents
Seamen on Land? A Preliminary Analysis of Medieval Ship Graffiti on Cyprus
This article reports on the results of a research project entitled ‘KARAVOI. The Ship Graffiti on the Medieval Monuments of Cyprus: Mapping, Documentation and Digitisation’, during which 233 ship graffiti were recorded in 44 different monuments on the island, dating from the 15th to the 20th centuries. Innovative recording techniques have been used to mitigate the effects of the subjective or partial recording of graffiti lines on tracing paper. Apart from the study of ship graffiti as iconographic sources, particular emphasis has been given to their geographical and social context through a comprehensive analysis of the graffiti types and their spatial distribution in the monuments as well as the monuments location on the island
How Did West Bengal Perform in the \u27Firecracker Ban Test\u27 amid COVID-19?
This article analyses what makes a social regulation like the firecracker ban in the state of West Bengal in India a success story such that it may be replicated by other states which are striving hard to curb air pollution levels and arrest rising pandemic cases amidst a festive season. The authors have examined the firecracker ban on the basis of Teubner’s Regulatory Trilemma and Parker and Braithwaite’s three principles to check whether it passes the tests of effectiveness, responsiveness and coherence. The article demonstrates how West Bengal has carved a new and expanded meaning of “performing regulation” in India by ensuring compliance through not just a threat of punishment but cooperation as well

Mahua Moitra’s Plight Is Testament to the Kismet of Women Politicians in India
Indian politics has constructed a sexual imagery of women leaders that primarily focuses on their character, physical appearance, dress, demeanour and family. While their success is understated and mostly shoved under the carpet, their failure is wholly attributed to their gender
Another Hole in India’s Data Tapestry
This article argues that the government’s decision to exclude anaemia as an indicator of women’s and children’s health from the National Family Health Survey, 2023–24 creates a ‘gender data gap’
Marriage Matters for Same-Sex Couples
Excerpt: “The ongoing litigation around ‘same sex marriage’ in India raises the need to understand the importance of marriage to same-sex couples. It is also essential to understand the jurisprudential reasoning behind opening up the institution of marriage and extending the bundle of marital rights, benefits, and privileges to same-sex couples.
