Popperā€™s open society and Nietzscheā€™s existentialist social engineering: A comparison

This thesis aims to stage a productive dialogue between the existentialist philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche (1844 -1900) and the socio-scientific philosophy of Karl Popper (1902-1994). I intend to define Popper's open society by presenting his political philosophy as deriving from his philosophy of science. The open society is characterized as a society free from tyranny, tribalism and the type of ideologies which may restrict the individual from making their own decisions. To ensure this Popper advocates what he calls ā€˜piecemeal social engineeringā€™ ā€“ a process attempting to dismiss historical doctrines enforced by those thinkers he calls "historicists" including those he refers to as "enemiesā€ of the open society, namely Plato, Hegel and Marx. I believe Popper's open society invites ā€˜piecemeal social engineeringā€™ as an alternative to the social engineering of the enemies of the open society. His philosophy of social science enables Popper's social engineering philosophy to become combined with the existentialism of Friedrich Nietzsche, which together may empower the open society to gradually become more open than before. A similar type of social engineering can be found in Nietzsche's philosophy, in particular in his aphoristic work, where he rejects what he perceives as ā€˜polemicalā€™, such as the development and endurance of nihilism. Nietzsche presents nihilism as both socially constructed (namely from the Judeo-Christian view of morality) and as a meta-social fact. He advocates an existentialist philosophy which persuades the individual to overcome those elements of life which may foster the destruction of the individual's own values and freedom bestowed by her own existence. The context of Nietzsche's fragmental philosophy I find it to be purporting towards a social engineering which is existentialist by nature. Eventually, it will become apparent in this thesis how the structural correlations between Popper's piecemeal social engineering and Nietzsche's existentialist social engineering enable their productive dialogue and a resulting improved account. To test the strengths of the improved account following from the dialogue I stage between Nietzsche and Popper, I am going to present their philosophies in the context of the current debates on the politics of identity. I am going to do so in order to see how Nietzscheā€™s and Popper's philosophies can be applied in a practical context, and how they may complement each-other in that context. The success will be measured by how much these philosophies can support and enhance progressivism within the identity politics of the open society

Experimental Analyses for The Mechanical Behavior of Pressed All-Ceramic Molar Crowns with Anatomical Design

Ceramic restorations show considerable variation in strength and structural reliability regarding to the type of material, and design characteristics. The fracture of ceramics occurs with little or no plastic deformation, with cracks propagated in an unstable manner under applied tensile stresses. The aim of the study was to assess experimental analyses of pressed monolithic ceramic crowns with anatomical design used in the posterior areas in order to understand their mechanical behavior before following their clinical use. Experiments were conducted on a complete molar crown preparation. Experiments show different modes of fracture for the tested samples. Digital images from the fractured pieces of the crowns were used to verify the fragments in all cases final fracture occurred by splitting into two and often more parts. The graphically representation of the displacement depending on the load highlights a series of peaks that can be correlated with cracks occurred in crowns. The development of well-designed mechanical experiments could be useful to help to predict clinical survival of these new all-ceramic restorative techniques and materials. Because failure is often accompanied by complete cracking of the crowns, preliminary research should represents a compulsory goal

Poverty is a serious problem that is always faced by a country that must be overcome immediately. In addition to being a problem, poverty is also a benchmark for socioeconomic conditions in measuring the success of development carried out by the government in a region / region. On the other hand, the Human Development Index (HDI) is one of the important indicators to measure success in efforts to build the quality of human life, and has an important impact on economic growth. Economic growth is the spearhead considering the correlation between HDI and poverty. This research was conducted to determine the influence of the human development index variable and poverty as the independent variable on economic growth in East Java as the dependent variable. The analysis used is quantitative analysis with multiple regression analysis methods in data with 2021 data and cross section data from 37 districts/cities in East Java and the conclusion is that all the independent variables used in this research have a significant effect on the amount of economic growth in East Java. either simultaneously or partially

Implementing a secured IMS-based Identity exchange

With the continuous development of telecommunications, networking and the ubiquitous computing the necessity of higher bandwidth and better quality of services is always one of the most important user requirements. In this background, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is becoming very important for the Next Generation Networking (NGN) and all-Internet Protocol (all-IP) infrastructure. This new tendency provides opportunities for new operators and service providers to enter the market and to be competitive. These developments will generate new challenges related to the user identity assurance. It will be more difficult to rely on the old paradigms of the static operator relationships guaranteeing end-to-end the identity of the users. In this case there is crucial need to find new mechanisms to provide to the end points assurance about the identity of their counterparts. In this work we implemented a solution that establishes a trust between two end points by taking advantage of IMS in a roaming scenario where the visited access network may not be entirely trustworthy. In essence, this means establishing an identity association so that the parties can have operator provided assurance regarding the used identities. This allows local trust decisions and does not rely on the existence of global Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). Concretely in this work we have modified the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) ā€œINVITEā€ messages by adding new SIP headers such as the identity and the signature of the SIP entities taking part in a multimedia conversation. Every SIP entity has to add its own identity and signature and also has to verify those of its counterparts in a typical SIP ā€œINVITEā€ exchange. By this work we show that establishing this kind of identity association is feasible but some scalability issues have to be taken into account such as the time delay or the size of the new messages. In order to accomplish this master thesis work, we have used the Open Source IMS Core (OSIMS) platform developed by FOKUS, SailFin project as the Application Server (AS) and IMS Communicator as the IMS client. /Kir1

Ectopic Thyroid Tissue and Management Approach: Surgical vs Conservative

    Get PDF
From embryology it well known that thyroid gland is the first endocrine gland to develop in the body, starting by the end of third week post conception. The thyroid gland originates from primitive pharynx and the neural crests. Surgeons should have a complete understanding of embryonic development of thyroid and parathyroid gland, as well as knowledge of possible congenital abnormalities of thyroid dysgenesis that is characterized by thyroid ectopia, as may impact medical assessment and the surgical procedures approach and prevention of possible complications. Surgical vs conservative management approach should be well evaluated and proper professional decision upon patient case should be taken, upon patient consensus. Thyroid ectopia is a rare disease, and according to most studies and respective database it is estimated with prevalence about 1 per 100ā€Š000ā€“300ā€Š000 people, rising to 1 per 4000ā€“8000 patients with thyroid disease. This paper focuses on surgical approach of lingual ectopic tissue of thyroid of a 32 years old women. Background: Prognosis of middle third cholangiocarcinoma according of recent studies remains poor. However, identifying survival predictors, mentioned a few; stage and patients age, still should take place in clinical practices especially for minor medical facility centers. Case presentation: A 75 years old lady, was assessed and diagnosed with middle third cholangiocarcinoma, patients underwent from laboratory workup; where SGOT, SGPT were almost threefold elevated, as well Total bilirubin, direct and indirect, were four to tenfold higher than normal levels. CRP as well was seen tenfold higher than normal levels. MRCP was seen dilated of biliary ducts, dilatation of common hepatic duct, narrowing of common hepatic and ductus choledochus that goes with cholangiocarcinoma aspect. Thickness of junction lumen with solid mass 7 mm, infiltrates totally the wall that created the blockage, with increased of contrast intake, no infiltration of pancreas head is seen. Closeness of mass with the vena porta There were seen two lymph nodes less than 1 cm in gastro hepatic ligament. No infiltration of inferior vena cava, common pancreatic ductus normal. No infiltration of superior mesenteric vena. After multidisciplinary consultation and patientā€™s decision informed consent was completed, personalized patientsā€™ treatment was performed, surgical intervention, biopsy and then adjuvant chemotherapy was applied, with a 3-year survival and quality life was achieved. Conclusions: even in advanced cases of highly malignant cases like cholangiocarcinoma, even most of authors and surgeons agree in low survival rate according to study data, we should create a personalized strategy treatment of each patient in order to increase survival and quality of life as well Keywords: Cholangiocarcinoma, surgical, chemotherapy, personalized treatment DOI: 10.7176/ALST/93-06 Publication date: April 30th 202
