Pig Tales: Forensic Taphonomy in Cozine Creek

    Get PDF
The medicolegal community relies heavily upon determining the postmortem interval (PMI), the knowledge of how much time has elapsed since the person has died. Forensic taphonomy is the study of postmortem changes caused by outdoor environmental conditions that play a crucial role in decomposition rates. These include local temperatures, humidity, soil, plants, and insect and other scavenger activity. Minimal research exists examining the rate of surface decomposition in the Pacific Northwest climate. The purpose of this pilot study is to analyze the rate of decomposition in the microclimate of McMinnville, Oregon. A deceased juvenile pig (Sus scrofa) was placed in a secure cage in Cozine Creek on February 17, 2019. Data collection continues until May 2019 and includes daily observations, photographs, weather data, and insect collection for entomological assessment. Statistical analysis will be performed once all data is collected. Preliminary results suggest weather fluctuations and insect activity significantly influence decomposition rates. During the first four weeks, cold weather conditions did not favor decomposition: snow, low temperatures, and few insects. Once temperatures reached 13℃, a dramatic increase in insect activity and intensity was observed. Dermestid beetles, maggot masses, and blowflies were present, and within days a substantial increase in decomposition occurred

Specific Heat of a Three Dimensional Metal Near a T=0 Magnetic Transition with Dynamic Exponent z=2,3,4

We derive expressions for the universal contribution to the specific heat of a three-dimensional metal near a zero-temperature phase transition with dynamic exponent z=2,3z=2,3, or 4. The results allow a quantitative comparison of theory to data. We illustrate the application of our results by analyzing data for Ce1x_{1-x}Lux_xCu2_2Si2_2, which has been claimed to be near a quantum critical point.Comment: 23 pages, revtex. Designing An Augmented Reality Teaching Framework for Mechanical Students at College Vocational in Malaysia

    Get PDF
With the impact of advanced technologies, people at young age have start using smartphones in their daily life. In the education sector, most researchers have started developing new teaching styles that can adapt to technology nowadays. This also including augmented reality technology that can be used as a teaching aid. However, there are no sufficient studies that analyze the suitable construct that can be formed as a framework as a reference for a mechanical teacher in College Vocational, Malaysia. In order to design a teaching framework to apply AR technology to the mechanical student the researcher performs a systematic literature review. This review analyses nine studies in the field. Based on the result that has been conducted, there are six constructs that have been explored: preparation, process, device, teaching approach, AR-type, and purpose. From this construct, several items has been extracted

Opinions of women from deprived communities on the NHS stop smoking service in England - person-centered perspectives

    Get PDF
Background: In most European countries, women are relatively more susceptible to smoking-related diseases, find it more difficult to quit and are more likely to relapse than men. With the aim of improving the understanding of women’s needs from smoking cessation services, this qualitative study examines perceptions of women from deprived communities on the National Health Service stop smoking service in England, UK. Methods: A qualitative study of 11 women, smokers and ex-smokers, who had used the stop smoking service located in disadvantaged communities in East Sussex, England, UK. Data were collected through focus group and semi-structured interviews and were subjected to thematic analysis. Results: Women felt that services tailored to their needs would improve cessation rates. They expect smoking cessation facilitators to be non-judgemental and to offer psychological insight into addiction. However, women’s opinions differed on the importance for facilitators to be female or ex-smokers and on the preference of group or one-to-one services, some women expressed a preference for women only groups. The women praised the continuity of care, capacity for peer support, flexibility of time and location and free cessation aids offered. Conversely, the women felt that services were poorly advertised, that access was not universally good and that services at the work place and drop-in groups would improve access for working women and women with young children. Conclusion: Flexible, person-centered services that are tailored towards the needs of individual smokers and better dissemination of information regarding the range of services available could facilitate greater uptake of smoking cessation services for women in deprived communities

A comprehensive review of a data centre for a cooling system

Cyber-Physical-Social Systems, commercial enterprises, and social networking use data centers to store, process, and distribute massive amounts of data. A data center serves as the foundation for all of these endeavors. The data center's workload and power consumption are increasing rapidly due to the demand for remote data services. Mechanical refrigeration and terminal cooling are the most critical components for most cooling systems. There is a way to transfer heat from the data center to the outside environment, but it's a complicated process. Air cooling systems and technology are most useful for room cooling and rack-level cooling. Because of their superior cooling performance and higher energy efficiency, air cooling has attracted more attention than water cooling in most existing data centers. The chillers and fans consume the most power of all the cooling equipment in the system. These methods can be divided into mechanism-based methods and data-driven methods for energy management of the cooling system. Operation management of cooling equipment is proposed to reduce power consumption, mainly using predictive model control and reinforcement learning-based methods. An overview of the data center's cooling system is presented in this paper, which focuses on the most common cooling solutions, power consumption modeling methods, and optimization control strategies, among others. In addition, the data center's cooling system is described as a current and future issue

Industrial communication networking: an ethernet based implementation

    Get PDF
Recent advancements achieved in industrial communications and networking technology have made it possible to apply Ethernet-based communication networking system at all levels of industrial automation, especially at the controller level where the capacity to do data exchanges in real-time is mandatory. This paper describes the development of an industrial communications network based on the Ethernet protocol and its implementation in a Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) system. The application of Ethernet protocol in such a system is aimed at overcoming the difficulties experienced when trying to communicate in real-time using serial communication networks, such as when attempting to access and retrieve data from other stations. Other advantages of this approach include the relative ease of achieving system integration and the possibility of simple upgrading to include the management and enterprise levels in the industrial automation system pyramid. In this work, the Ethernet module is installed onto a supervisory PLC to integrate all the stations present in the existing CIM system found in our laboratory. The workability of this approach is analyzed and compared with the conventional serial communication network

Records and sequences of records from random variables with a linear trend

We consider records and sequences of records drawn from discrete time series of the form Xn=Yn+cnX_{n}=Y_{n}+cn, where the YnY_{n} are independent and identically distributed random variables and cc is a constant drift. For very small and very large drift velocities, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of the probability pn(c)p_n(c) of a record occurring in the nnth step and the probability PN(c)P_N(c) that all NN entries are records, i.e. that X1<X2<...<XNX_1 < X_2 < ... < X_N. Our work is motivated by the analysis of temperature time series in climatology, and by the study of mutational pathways in evolutionary biology.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figure
