Multivariate Design of Experiments for Engineering Dimensional Analysis
We consider the design of dimensional analysis experiments when there is more
than a single response. We first give a brief overview of dimensional analysis
experiments and the dimensional analysis (DA) procedure. The validity of the DA
method for univariate responses was established by the Buckingham -Theorem
in the early 20th century. We extend the theorem to the multivariate case,
develop basic criteria for multivariate design of DA and give guidelines for
design construction. Finally, we illustrate the construction of designs for DA
experiments for an example involving the design of a heat exchanger
States with a higher concentration of income going to the top one percent are more likely to adopt income tax
Americans are taxed at a federal – and often state – level. But what affects whether or not states adopt taxes? In new research, Thomas Hayes and Christopher Dennis have determined that the concentration of wealth matters for state tax systems. They find that there is a positive relationship between income going to the top 1 percent and the likelihood a state will adopt an income tax, suggesting that state authorities are keen to capture the income of top earners when income becomes highly concentrated. They also find that the higher the concentration of income in a state, the more likely the state is to allow taxpayers to deduct federal income taxes from state taxes
Determinants of Real House Price Dynamics
We explore the dynamics of real house prices by estimating serial correlation and mean reversion coefficients from a panel data set of 62 metro areas from 1979-1995. The serial correlation and reversion parameters are then shown to vary cross sectionally with city size, real income growth, population growth, and real construction costs. Serial correlation is higher in metro areas with higher real income, population growth and real construction costs. Mean reversion is greater in large metro areas and faster-growing cities with lower construction costs. Empirically, substantial overshooting of prices can occur in high real construction cost areas, which have high serial correlation and low mean reversion, such as the coastal cities of Boston, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego.
The Relative Importance of Patch Area and Perimeter–Area Ratio to Grassland Breeding Birds
Habitat fragmentation has been implicated as a major cause of population decline in grassland birds. We tested the hypothesis that a combination of area and shape determines the use of grassland patches by breeding birds. We compared both species richness and individual species presence in 45 wet meadow grasslands in the floodplain of the central Platte River, Nebraska. Bird data were collected through the use of belt transects and supplemented by walking and listening outside transects. Our data supported our primary hypothesis that perimeter–area ratio, which reflects both the area and shape of a patch, is the strongest predictor of both individual species presence and overall species richness. The probability of occurrence for all six common species (Grasshopper Sparrows, Bobolinks, Upland Sandpipers, Western Meadowlarks, Dickcissels, and Red-winged Blackbirds) was significantly inversely correlated with perimeter–area ratio. The probability of occurrence of Grasshopper Sparrows, Bobolinks, Upland Sandpipers, and Western Meadowlarks was also correlated with area. We conclude that species richness is maximized when patches are large (\u3e50 ha) and shaped so that they provide abundant interior areas, free from the impacts of edges

New magnetostratigraphy for the Olduvai Subchron in the Koobi Fora Formation, northwest Kenya, with implications for early Homo
A problematic magnetostratigraphy for the Koobi Fora Formation has contributed to debates on the evolutionary implications for early hominin fossils. To address this, 50 independent samples distributed over a nearly 63-m-thick interval were collected from the lower-middle KBS Member type section in fossil collection Area 102, northeast Turkana Basin. Characteristic directions obtained by thermal demagnetization define a coherent magnetostratigraphy that is supported by alternating-field studies on 28 sister specimens and the prior tephrochronological framework. Two long polarity intervals were recognized, each 30–40 m in thickness, and interpreted as the upper part of the normal polarity Olduvai Subchron and the overlying reverse polarity Matuyama Chron. The end Olduvai consists of a normal–reverse–normal polarity sequence occurring over a thickness of at least 1 m but perhaps up to 5 m, suggesting that this subchron has a short reverse interval in its uppermost part. Such a fine-scale structure also has been reported from several other sites, like the Pliocene–Pleistocene boundary and point stratotype section at Vrica, Italy, which serves as a basis for formally delimiting three temporally discrete polarity subintervals for the Olduvai Subchron. These paleomagnetic results that place the upper boundary of the Olduvai at ∼ 48 m above the base of the KBS Member, coupled with published radioisotopic dates, firmly secure the age of partial cranium KNM-ER 3733 in the interval 1.78–1.48 Ma, with an interpolated age of ∼ 1.7 Ma, giving this fossil the most unambiguous numerical-age constraints, as compared to the oldest Homo cranial remains from Europe and Asia. Nonetheless, assured placement of the top of the Olduvai Subchron in the KBS Member is not sufficient in the face of other uncertainties to influence conventional interpretations of the timing and direction for the global dispersal of early Homo erectus

Chronostratigraphy of KNM-ER 3733 and other Area 104 hominins from Koobi Fora
A magnetostratigraphy for ∼60 m of Koobi Fora Formation sediment in Area 104 was derived from 46 oriented samples that produced well-resolved characteristic magnetizations from progressive thermal demagnetization. Approximately 59 m below the Morte Tuff, previously dated to ∼1.51 Ma (millions of years ago), the Olduvai-Matuyama boundary (∼1.78 Ma) was found to be at the level of marker bed A2—inconsistent with the Area 102 type section and thus contrary to fossil dating schemes that utilize temporal equivalence between A2 [104] and A2 [102]. The magnetostratigraphic data, coupled with the Morte Tuff, provide a means to interpolate new ages for marker beds A2 [104] and the White Tuff, as well as multiple Area 104 hominin fossils. Noteworthy is the new date of ∼1.63 Ma for KNM-ER 3733, which now implicates KNM-ER 2598 as the sole early African Homo erectus fossil demonstrably older than Dmanisi and Java Homo specimens. Re-dating KNM-ER 3733 creates a ∼300-kyr gap at 1.9 to 1.6 Ma in the African fossil record of H. erectus, which might be partially spanned by hand axes recently dated at ∼1.76 Ma, if the Acheulian is indeed proprietary to this species
Overwintering in New Zealand stick insects
Stick insects are found in a variety of habitats throughout New Zealand, including at least four species that occur at high altitudes. Here they face physiological challenges that differ from their typically warmer lowland habitats, but their strategies to deal with harsh winter conditions are not known. Autumn and winter field surveys, coupled with caging experiments, were conducted to determine which life stages are overwintering in montane and lowland habitats. Data loggers were placed for approximately one year at each site to measure the leaf litter and canopy microhabitat temperatures. From this, we have found that alpine and lowland stick insects persist in a variety of life stages throughout the year despite multiple exposure to freezing temperatures
Measuring Organization of Large Surficial Clasts in Heterogeneous Gravel Beach Sediments
The natural stratification and interlocking “organization” of armored sediments in heterogeneous, coarse-grained, beaches provides protection and enhances habitat for borrowing sedentary megafauna and macrofauna such as hard-shelled clams. Here, we develop a novel metric for quantifying sediment organization of large surficial beach clasts through sedimentologic and photogrammetric analyses of 37 lower intertidal heterogeneous gravel beaches in western Prince William Sound, Alaska (USA). Grain size, photogrammetric, and Wolman Pebble Count clast-size data from 64, ~1-m2 study plots are combined into a clast-size-independent “Organization Metric” to quantify the degree of organization in the meshed arrangement of larger surficial sediments. This metric was validated through field manipulation experiments and comparisons of adjacent plots characterized by different clast sizes. Application of this metric to subsets of Prince William Sound beaches that underwent differential treatment following the Exxon Valdez oil spill reveals persistent physical effects of artificial beach disturbance even 21 years after the cleanup. This has important implications for beach management (e.g., cleaning or dredging) and for the diverse and productive sedentary megafaunal assemblages that live within these sediments. Overall, this study provides a new approach for quantifying organization of heterogenous coarse sediments in diverse natural settings; in particular, heterogenous gravel beaches

Functional Brain Hyperactivations Are Linked to an Electrophysiological Measure of Slow Interhemispheric Transfer Time after Pediatric Moderate/Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.
Increased task-related blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) activation is commonly observed in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of moderate/severe traumatic brain injury (msTBI), but the functional relevance of these hyperactivations and how they are linked to more direct measures of neuronal function remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated how working memory load (WML)-dependent BOLD activation was related to an electrophysiological measure of interhemispheric transfer time (IHTT) in a sample of 18 msTBI patients and 26 demographically matched controls from the UCLA RAPBI (Recovery after Pediatric Brain Injury) study. In the context of highly similar fMRI task performance, a subgroup of TBI patients with slow IHTT had greater BOLD activation with higher WML than both healthy control children and a subgroup of msTBI patients with normal IHTT. Slower IHTT treated as a continuous variable was also associated with BOLD hyperactivation in the full TBI sample and in controls. Higher WML-dependent BOLD activation was related to better performance on a clinical cognitive performance index, an association that was more pronounced within the patient group with slow IHTT. Our previous work has shown that a subgroup of children with slow IHTT after pediatric msTBI has increased risk for poor white matter organization, long-term neurodegeneration, and poor cognitive outcome. BOLD hyperactivations after msTBI may reflect neuronal compensatory processes supporting higher-order capacity demanding cognitive functions in the context of inefficient neuronal transfer of information. The link between BOLD hyperactivations and slow IHTT adds to the multi-modal validation of this electrophysiological measure as a promising biomarker
