    When Shape Matters: correcting the ICFs to derive the chemical abundances of bipolar and elliptical PNe

    The extraction of chemical abundances of ionised nebulae from a limited spectral range is usually hampered by the lack of emission lines corresponding to certain ionic stages. So far, the missing emission lines have been accounted for by the ionisation correction factors (ICFs), constructed under simplistic assumptions like spherical geometry by using 1-D photoionisation modelling. In this contribution we discuss the results (Goncalves et al. 2011, in prep.) of our ongoing project to find a new set of ICFs to determine total abundances of N, O, Ne, Ar, and S, with optical spectra, in the case of non-spherical PNe. These results are based on a grid of 3-D photoionisation modelling of round, elliptical and bipolar shaped PNe, spanning the typical PN luminosities, effective temperatures and densities. We show that the additional corrections --to the widely used Kingsburgh and Barlow (1994) ICFs-- are always higher for bipolars than for ellipticals. Moreover, these additional corrections are, for bipolars, up to: 17% for oxygen, 33% for nitrogen, 40% for neon, 28% for argon and 50% for sulphur.     This article presents a comparative analysis of client participation (CP) in child welfare and mental health and mental retardation systems. It identifies three rationales for client participation (philosophical, pragmatic, and political), along with the limitations surrounding each rationale. It uses social construction theory to examine the historical and ideological underpinnings of organized, institutionally-sanctioned client involvement inside and outside government. In order to enhance the capacity of clients to influence service and benefit systems, their role must evolve through the mutual efforts of government-strengthening client participation policies and independent organizing from the bottom up through community development and advocacy programs

    O presente artigo objetiva mostrar, através de pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, a caminhada da Gestão de Pessoas dentro das Universidades Federais, desde a criação do Departamento Administrativo do Serviço Público (DASP) até a instituição da Política Nacional de Desenvolvimento de Pessoal (PNDP) e do Plano de Desenvolvimento Institucional (PDI), apresentando os principais momentos, que referenciam a mudança de pensamento da área no decorrer do tempo, transformando a Gestão de Pessoas de um ente limitado em estratégico dentro das instituições, com suas motivações legais e conceituais para o processo de desenvolvimento. O trabalho servirá de subsídio para reflexão sobre os avanços da Gestão de Pessoas nas Instituições Federais de Ensino no Brasil, que, na suma do trabalho, apresenta, mesmo perante um avanço inquestionável na área descrita, um longo caminho a ser percorrido, como causa de anos de estagnação das políticas e práticas de gestão dentro do serviço público

    L1599B: Cloud Envelope and C+ Emission in a Region of Moderately Enhanced Radiation Field

    We study the effects of an asymmetric radiation field on the properties of a molecular cloud envelope. We employ observations of carbon monoxide (12CO and 13CO), atomic carbon, ionized carbon, and atomic hydrogen to analyze the chemical and physical properties of the core and envelope of L1599B, a molecular cloud forming a portion of the ring at approximately 27 pc from the star Lambda Ori. The O III star provides an asymmetric radiation field that produces a moderate enhancement of the external radiation field. Observations of the [CII] fine structure line with the GREAT instrument on SOFIA indicate a significant enhanced emission on the side of the cloud facing the star, while the [Ci], 12CO and 13CO J = 1-0 and 2-1, and 12CO J = 3-2 data from the PMO and APEX telescopes suggest a relatively typical cloud interior. The atomic, ionic, and molecular line centroid velocities track each other very closely, and indicate that the cloud may be undergoing differential radial motion. The HI data from the Arecibo GALFA survey and the SOFIA/GREAT [CII] data do not suggest any systematic motion of the halo gas, relative to the dense central portion of the cloud traced by 12CO and 13CO.Comment: 9 Figure

    Exogenous ACC Deaminase Is Key to Improving the Performance of Pasture Legume-Rhizobial Symbioses in the Presence of a High Manganese Concentration

    Manganese (Mn) toxicity is a very common soil stress around the world, which is responsible for low soil fertility. This manuscript evaluates the effect of the endophytic bacterium Pseudomonas sp. Q1 on different rhizobial-legume symbioses in the absence and presence of Mn toxicity. Three legume species, Cicer arietinum (chickpea), Trifolium subterraneum (subterranean clover), and Medicago polymorpha (burr medic) were used. To evaluate the role of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase produced by strain Q1 in these interactions, an ACC deaminase knockout mutant of this strain was constructed and used in those trials. The Q1 strain only promoted the symbiotic performance of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii ATCC 14480T and Ensifer meliloti ATCC 9930T, leading to an increase of the growth of their hosts in both conditions. Notably, the acdS gene disruption of strain Q1 abolished the beneficial effect of this bacterium as well as causing this mutant strain to act deleteriously in those specific symbioses. This study suggests that the addition of non-rhizobia with functional ACC deaminase may be a strategy to improve the pasture legume–rhizobial symbioses, particularly when the use of rhizobial strains alone does not yield the expected results due to their difficulty in competing with native strains or in adapting to inhibitory soil conditions.This work was financed by FEDER funds through the COMPETE 2020 (POCI), and FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia in the framework of the project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016810 (PTDC/AGR-PRO/2978/2014) and Project UIDB/05183/2020

    Perspectives on an Arts Magnet School : the Voices of Elementary School Children

    Since the beginning of public school as a social institution early in the nineteenth century, the voices of children have been missing from the discussion about school. From the progressive era to the current standards based movement, structures of education have been premised on the ideas of what adults think are the best ways for children to learn. But educators and other adults are recognizing the importance of student perspectives by providing children opportunities to participate in critical reflection about school. By including children of all ages in this discussion, educators, policy makers and researchers may begin to examine their own assumptions about student learning, subject matter and educational policy. A phenomenological approach was used to describe the lived school experiences of five 6th grade children attending an arts magnet school in the Pacific Northwest. Phenomenology focuses on the individual lived experiences of the study participants and how their understanding of those experiences shape the phenomena under study. The research question was this: How do children perceive and describe their experiences of school? Data were collected through three in-depth interviews of each participant. An iterative process of questioning, information giving, analysis and verification was characteristic of the entire study. Through a process of phenomenological reduction, 5 themes emerged from the data: (a) Feelings, (b) Learning, (c) Relationships, (d) Time, (e) Orderliness. Limitations of the study included the small sample size and the possibility of researcher influence on participant responses because of perceived adult/child power differentials

    Inhaled amikacin for severe Gram-negative pulmonary infections in the intensive care unit: current status and future prospects

    Recently, the use of nebulized antibiotics in the intensive care unit, in particular amikacin, has been the subject of much discussion, owing to unconvincing results from the latest randomized clinical trials. Here, we examine and reappraise the evidence in favor and against this therapeutic strategy; we then discuss the potential factors that might have played a role in the negative findings of recent clinical trials. Also, we call attention to several factors that are seldom considered by study developers and regulatory agencies, to promote translational research in this field and improve the design of future randomized clinical trials
