STUDENT RESPONSES ON A LEARNING OF PARAGRAPH-BASED WRITING THROUGH CIRCLE THE SAGE BASED ON CRITICAL THINKING

Writing is one of English skills that students should master. There are some levels of writing described as follows: word-based writing, sentence-based writing, paragraph-based writing, genre-based writing and academic writing. Due to the above statements, students find it difficult to organize sentences into a coherent paragraph. Thus, the researcher conducts a research on analysis of student responses on a paragraph based writing course which uses a method of circle the sage based on critical thinking. This research uses a method of descriptive analysis. The data are collected using questionnaires to obtain the student responses on course learning of paragraph based writing through a method of circle the sage based on critical thinking. A descriptive-qualitative data analysis is used to analyze the learning achievement of a paragraph-based writing course through a method of circle the sage based on critical thinking. From the research results, it shows that lecturers are expected to use more applicable methods or techniques to enable students to have critical thinking to put their ideas in writing a paragrap

EVALUATION ANALYSIS ON A TEXTBOOK ENTITLED “CAMBRIDGE ENGLISH IDIOM IN USE ADVANCED”

This study discussed about an evaluation of textbook analysis entitled “Cambridge English Idiom in Used Advanced” written by written by Felicity O’Dell and Michael McCarthy. In this study, the textbook was analyzed using rubric of textbook evaluation in term of layout and design, activities, language type, materials, subject and content. From the discussion, it can be concluded that the book is suitable for advanced learner in term of the composition, given example, exercises and context

VIDEO ANIMATION AS TEACHING MEDIA IN ELT

The issue of TPACK (Technology Pedagogical Content Knowledge) offers a problem solution for teachers who are interested in implementing blended learning. Education and Technology have become an important aspect in every student's daily life beyond the school and within the classroom. Experts now create software that facilitates teachers in creating animated videos which contain pedagogical knowledge. One of them is Videoscribe which can be used to present learning content by combining interesting images, sounds, and graphs to attract students to enjoy the learning process. The features provided by this software are varied, they enable teachers to design learning media that can be adjusted to meet the goal of the lesson. This paper will elaborate on how teachers can design an interesting and engaging learning media to meet the students’ needs and to achieve learning objectives by using the software.

THE ROLE OF BLENDED LEARNING IN ENHANCING STUDENTS’ WRITING PARAGRAPH

The use of efficient and appropriate learning media-based learning is needed at all levels of education.  In English language teaching (ELT) at the university level, the use of media can help to improve paragraph writing. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of Blended Learning on improving learning outcomes of EFL university students' writing paragraphs in English. This quasi-experimental research entailed non-parametric statistical analysis. The results indicated a statistically significant improvement after getting treatment of blended learning.  The average pretest score was 65.9 and the average posttest score was (86.6) which means higher than the pre-test. These results also indicated that the Blended Learning model stimulated students to explore more ideas in writing activities. In addition, the results of the questionnaire showed that 85% of students were enthusiastic and enjoyed the learning process. Since the dearth of the research sample, further research has to be conducted in a broad research sample to be a more generalizable pedagogical implication.Keywords: blended learning, writing, paragraph

The Application of Strategic Competition in EFL Setting in Transactional and Interpersonal Conversation Class

This study attempts to describe the communication strategies (CS) utilized by English education students in the first semester at the University of Muhammadiyah Semarang. Data derived from the transcription of online conversation using virtual video conference occurred in the classroom. By evaluating their utterances and applying Celce Murcia (1995) typologies of communication strategies, this descriptive qualitative study was able to determine the frequency of communication methods utilized in the class of Transactional and Interpersonal Conversation. According to the findings, the frequency of communication strategies was Avoidance Strategies (15%), compensatory strategies (48%), Stalling or time gaining strategies including fillers, hesitations, and gambits (16%), and appeal for help (22%).

PENERAPAN STRATEGI SEMANTIC MAPPING UNTUK MENINGKATKAN KETERAMPILAN MENULIS TEKS REPORT BAGI MAHASISWA ILMU KEPERAWATAN UNIMUS

Melalui pendidikan bahasa Inggris diharapkan mahasiswa mampu berbahasa Inggris secara lisanmaupun tulis sebagai life skill sesuai dengan tingkat perkembangan literacy mereka. Untukmeningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa mahasiswa SI Ilmu Keperawatan UNIMUS dalam hal menulisteks report, penulis mencoba menerapkan strategi semantic mapping pada tahap joint construction oftext. Hasil yang diperoleh dalam penelitian ini yaitu melalui penerapan strategi semantic mappingketerampilan menulis teks report mahasiswa berdasarkan hasil tes kognitifnya dapat meningkatmenjadi 76,33 yang melebihi standar keberhasilan kinerja yang ditetapkan yaitu 70. selain ituberdasarkan hasil observasi, angket dan wawancara menunjukkan adanya peningkatakan keaktifandan ketertarikan mahasiswa terhadap pembelajaran menulis teks report menggunakan strategisemantic mappin

Developing Metacognitive Model on In-Service Teacher’s Academic Writing Through Virtual Flipped Classroom

The current study has two objectives. The first is to describe the process of developing a metacognitive model on in-service teachers’ academic writing through virtual flipped classrooms and then secondly, to investigate the teachers’ research writing interests using a metacognitive model on in-service teachers’ academic writing through virtual flipped classrooms. This research was conducted in the Demak regency. The researchers also used the Research and Development method. Validation results exemplify that the application of a metacognitive model to academic writing in the in-service teachers through virtual flipped classroom specifically used appropriate teaching materials to be used in classroom teaching, the attention is given to the outcomes of the validation, such as; the concept of conformance indicators, material performance indicators, demonstration indicators, and capability indicators. This proves that the metacognitive model on in-service teachers’ academic writing through virtual flipped classroom applications runs smoothly and according to what is expected. PENGEMBANGAN PERANGKAT PEMBELAJARAN PARAGRAPH BASED WRITING MENGGUNAKAN CIRCLE THE SAGE BERBASIS CRITICAL THINKING

Para mahasiswa semester tiga mengalami kesulitan dalam merangkai kata menjadi kalimat, dari kalimat menjadi paragraf sehingga membentuk suatu karangan yang menarik, koheren, dan kohesif. Sejalan dengan kendala yang kompleks di atas, maka perlu sekali dilakukan refleksi dan alternatif tindakan terhadap metode yang dikombinasi dengan model pembelajaran yang menarik. Perubahan dan refleksi dilakukan melalui pengembangan perangkat pembelajaran mata kuliah paragraph based writing dengan menggunakan metode circle the sage yang berbasis pada critical thinking sebagai rangsangan agar mahasiswa lebih aktif dan kreatif di dalam merancang tulisan berbahasa Inggris yang koheren dan kohesif. Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah menghasilkan perangkat pembelajaran mata kuliah paragraph based writing menggunakan circle the sage berbasis critical thinking. Metode penelitian yang digunakan oleh peneliti adalah metode penelitian dan pengembangan (research and development). Prosedur pengembangan dalam penelitian ini menggunakan model 4-D yaitu define (pendefinisian/ penetapan), design (perancangan), develop (pengembangan) dan disseminate (penyebaran). Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan hasil kuesioner sebelum dan sesudah treatment pembelajaran, lembar angket dari validator perangkat pembelajaran. Analisis data menggunakan deskriptif kualitatif yang menentukan keberhasilan pengembangan perangkat pembelajaran mata kuliah paragraph based writing menggunakan circle the sage berbasis critical thinking. Hasil penelitian ini disimpulkan bahwa adanya peningkatan pembelajaran menulis paragraf dengan metode circle the sage berbasis critical thinking sehingga tercapainya pengembangan perangkat pembelajaran menulis paragraf yang aplikatif.
