    Analysis of plastic zones in surrounding rocks around a circular tunnel considering the effect of intermediate principal stress and heterogeneity

    Based on a modified Mohr-Coulomb criterion with a non-uniform coefficient, a calculation method of plastic zone boundary of surrounding rocks in a circular tunnel in non-uniform stress field is established. Both the effects of intermediate principal stress and heterogeneity are studied. With the increase of the intermediate principal stress, the plastic zone size of the surrounding rocks will decrease first and then increase. Lateral pressure coefficient has an effect on the shape of the plastic zone. With the increase of lateral pressure coefficient, the plastic zone gradually becomes uniform, and the failure of surrounding rock develops upward and downward from both sides. As non-uniform coefficient increases, the material is more uniform and the effect of intermediate principal stress on the plastic zone is less significant. If the effect of intermediate principal stress is not taken into account, the calculation results tend to be consistent with results calculated by the Mohr-Coulomb criterion, which are considered to be conservative

    The Local Origin of the Tibetan Pig and Additional Insights into the Origin of Asian Pigs

    BACKGROUND: The domestic pig currently indigenous to the Tibetan highlands is supposed to have been introduced during a continuous period of colonization by the ancestors of modern Tibetans. However, there is no direct genetic evidence of either the local origin or exotic migration of the Tibetan pig. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We analyzed mtDNA hypervariable segment I (HVI) variation of 218 individuals from seven Tibetan pig populations and 1,737 reported mtDNA sequences from domestic pigs and wild boars across Asia. The Bayesian consensus tree revealed a main haplogroup M and twelve minor haplogroups, which suggested a large number of small scale in situ domestication episodes. In particular, haplogroups D1 and D6 represented two highly divergent lineages in the Tibetan highlands and Island Southeastern Asia, respectively. Network analysis of haplogroup M further revealed one main subhaplogroup M1 and two minor subhaplogroups M2 and M3. Intriguingly, M2 was mainly distributed in Southeastern Asia, suggesting for a local origin. Similar with haplogroup D6, M3 was mainly restricted in Island Southeastern Asia. This pattern suggested that Island Southeastern Asia, but not Southeastern Asia, might be the center of domestication of the so-called Pacific clade (M3 and D6 here) described in previous studies. Diversity gradient analysis of major subhaplogroup M1 suggested three local origins in Southeastern Asia, the middle and downstream regions of the Yangtze River, and the Tibetan highlands, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: We identified two new origin centers for domestic pigs in the Tibetan highlands and in the Island Southeastern Asian region

This survey provides a comprehensive review of established techniques and recent developments in HFR. Moreover, we offer a detailed account of datasets and benchmarks commonly used for evaluation. We finish by assessing the state of the field and discussing promising directions for future research

    Failure Probability Model considering the Effect of Intermediate Principal Stress on Rock Strength

    A failure probability model is developed to describe the effect of the intermediate principal stress on rock strength. Each shear plane in rock samples is considered as a micro-unit. The strengths of these micro-units are assumed to match Weibull distribution. The macro strength of rock sample is a synthetic consideration of all directions’ probabilities. New model reproduces the typical phenomenon of intermediate principal stress effect that occurs in some true triaxial experiments. Based on the new model, a strength criterion is proposed and it can be regarded as a modified Mohr-Coulomb criterion with a uniformity coefficient. New strength criterion can quantitatively reflect the intermediate principal stress effect on rock strength and matches previously published experimental results better than common strength criteria

    Recognition of Patterns of Benthic Diatom Assemblages within a River System to Aid Bioassessment

    Benthic algae, especially diatoms, are commonly used to assess water quality in rivers. However, algal-based assessments are challenging at the river system scale because longitudinal variation in physical habitat conditions may obscure algal responses to changes in water quality. In the present study, we surveyed benthic diatoms and environmental variables from a mountainous Chinese river system. Hierarchical clustering, discrimination analysis, and indicator species analysis were used together to explore associations between distribution patterns of diatom assemblages and water quality variables. Study sites were clustered into five groups based on their diatom community composition, with sites grouped by the sampling months. Chemical oxygen demand (COD), elevation, and total nitrogen (TN) were the most important predictors for site classification. Site groups with higher elevations had higher TN concentrations; however, COD concentrations were higher in lower elevation groups. Moreover, COD concentrations significantly differed between temporally separated groups. In total, 49 indicator species were identified for individual groups, with most taxa indicating the eutrophic condition. Additionally, we found that European diatom indices are not closely associated with water quality variables. We conclude that the identification of algal patterns and their driving forces can provide valuable information to aid bioassessment at the river system scale

    Experimental Investigation of the Anomalously Low Friction Phenomena in Blocky Rock Systems

    Rock masses can be regarded as a blocky rock system. After a disturbance load is applied, the anomalously low friction phenomenon may take place and cause geological disasters. A series of impact experiments on granite blocks were conducted to investigate the anomalously low friction phenomena. Vertical vibration, Fourier frequency spectrum, and horizontal motions were investigated. It can be found that the tensile phases of vertical vibration can reduce the maximum static friction force, namely, the shear strength. The quasi-resonance operating mode of the rock blocks was observed. During the stress wave propagation, the vibration in the loading direction tends to transfer from high frequency to low frequency and the modes of stress wave propagation do not depend on disturbance energies. The observed translational and rotational motions were due to the initial shear force, which is less than the friction force with no disturbance load. Stability of the blocky rock system is very sensitive to the initial stress state. In the subcritical state, friction force reduction can easily break the equilibrium of forces along the contact surface and even a slight disturbance may make the horizontal motions happen, which may lead to geological disasters with great energy release

    Dynamic Response and Damage Characteristics of Large Reinforced Concrete Slabs under Explosion

    To investigate the damage characteristics of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings during explosive incidents, a large RC slab (4 m × 5 m × 0.15 m) was meticulously designed, fabricated, and subjected to explosion experiments, which were complemented by comprehensive numerical simulations. The dynamic response parameters of the RC slabs under 0.5–1 kg TNT explosions were tested using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) pressure sensors, displacement sensors, and acceleration sensors. The damage morphologies under 5–40 kg TNT explosions were investigated using ANSYS/LS–DYNA 17.0 software. The results show that, with an increase in TNT charge, the RC slab gradually showed minor damage (5 kg), moderate damage (10–20 kg), heavy damage (25 kg), and complete destruction (30–40 kg). For the 20 kg TNT explosion condition, a 1020 mm × 760 mm explosion crater appeared on the top surface, which was in agreement with the 934 mm × 906 mm explosion crater obtained from the simulation. Based on the results, suitable P–I (pressure–impulse) curves for the 4 m × 5 m × 0.15 m RC slab were established. The results can provide a reference for damage assessments of large-sized buildings during explosion accidents

    Evaluating Water Resource Accessibility in Southwest China

    The accessibility, quantity, and quality of water resources are the basic requirements for guaranteeing water resource security. Research into regional water resource accessibility will contribute to improving regional water resource security and effective water resource management. In this study, we used a water resource accessibility index model considering five spatial factors to evaluate the grid-scale water resource accessibility and constructed the spatial pattern of water resource accessibility in Southwest China. Then, we analyzed the coupling coordination degree between county-level water resource accessibility and eco-socio-economic water demand elements. The water resource accessibility showed obvious regional differences, and the overall trend gradually decreased from Southeast to Northwest. The coupling coordination degree between county-level water resource accessibility and eco-socio-economic water demand elements was between 0.26 and 0.84, and was relatively low overall, whereas the counties (districts) with high coordination, moderate coordination, low coordination, reluctant coordination, and incoordination accounted for 0.92%, 5.31%, 21.06%, 59.71%, and 13.00% of total counties (districts), respectively. Therefore, the Southwest region needs to further strengthen the construction of its agricultural irrigation facilities, protect the water resources, and coordinate the relationship between water resource management and water demand elements to comprehensively guarantee regional sustainable development

    Using Characteristic Energy to Study Rural Ethnic Minorities’ Household Energy Consumption and Its Impact Factors in Chongqing, China

    In the context of general household energy transition, identifying different household energy consumption patterns is of great significance for the formulation of refined energy conservation and emission reduction policies. For historical reasons, the households of ethnic minorities in China tend to face more severe energy poverty problems. In this study, we proposed the concept and research method of characteristic energy, a new method to depict household energy use pattern. Combined with the diversity analysis, the energy use pattern of Tujia and Miao rural households in Chongqing, China, were studied. Households in research area were clustered into four groups with different characteristic energy sources: firewood, electricity, coal and gasoline, representing four types of household energy use pattern. The main impact factors of rural household energy use pattern are electrical appliances and amount of pig raising, indicating that household production and lifestyle play a decisive role in household energy use patterns. In addition, the research depicts the energy consumption characteristics of rural households with different incomes, ethnic groups and in different regions. The study puts forward corresponding energy saving countermeasures for different energy use pattern, helps to identify the heterogeneity of rural household energy use and promote the formulation of refined regional energy conservation and emission reduction policies
