Optimising the multiplex factor of the frequency domain multiplexed readout of the TES-based microcalorimeter imaging array for the X-IFU instrument on the Athena Xray observatory
Athena is a space-based X-ray observatory intended for exploration of the hot
and energetic universe. One of the science instruments on Athena will be the
X-ray Integrated Field Unit (X-IFU), which is a cryogenic X-ray spectrometer,
based on a large cryogenic imaging array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES) based
microcalorimeters operating at a temperature of 100mK. The imaging array
consists of 3800 pixels providing 2.5 eV spectral resolution, and covers a
field of view with a diameter of of 5 arc minutes. Multiplexed readout of the
cryogenic microcalorimeter array is essential to comply with the cooling power
and complexity constraints on a space craft. Frequency domain multiplexing has
been under development for the readout of TES-based detectors for this purpose,
not only for the X-IFU detector arrays but also for TES-based bolometer arrays
for the Safari instrument of the Japanese SPICA observatory. This paper
discusses the design considerations which are applicable to optimise the
multiplex factor within the boundary conditions as set by the space craft. More
specifically, the interplay between the science requirements such as pixel
dynamic range, pixel speed, and cross talk, and the space craft requirements
such as the power dissipation budget, available bandwidth, and electromagnetic
compatibility will be discussed
Radiolysis of NaCl at high and low temperatures: development of size distribution of bubbles and colloids
New experimental results are presented on low temperature irradiation (18 °C) of rock-salt samples which had been exposed to initial doses up to 320 GRad at 100 °C. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) shows that the latent heat of melting (LHM) of sodium colloids decreases during subsequent low-temperature irradiation, whereas the stored energy (SE) increases slowly, indicating that the process of radiolysis continues. The decrease of the LHM is due to dissolution of large colloids, because the intensities of the melting peaks decrease during the second stage irradiation at low temperature. The model is formulated to describe the nucleation kinetics and the evolution of the size distribution of chlorine precipitates and sodium colloids in NaCl under high dose irradiation. It is shown that the mechanism of dissolution of large Na colloids during low temperature irradiation can be related to melting of sodium colloids.
The signature of 44Ti in Cassiopeia A revealed by IBIS/ISGRI on INTEGRAL
We report the detection of both the 67.9 and 78.4 keV 44Sc gamma-ray lines in
Cassiopeia A with the INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI instrument. Besides the robustness
provided by spectro-imaging observations, the main improvements compared to
previous measurements are a clear separation of the two 44Sc lines together
with an improved significance of the detection of the hard X-ray continuum up
to 100 keV. These allow us to refine the determination of the 44Ti yield and to
constrain the nature of the nonthermal continuum emission. By combining
COMPTEL, BeppoSAX/PDS and ISGRI measurements, we find a line flux of (2.5 +/-
0.3)*10(-5) cm(-2) s(-1) leading to a synthesized 44Ti mass of 1.6
(+0.6-0.3)*10(-4) solar mass. This high value suggests that Cas A is peculiar
in comparison to other young supernova remnants, from which so far no line
emission from 44Ti decay has been unambiguously detected.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ
Dynamical response of the "GGG" rotor to test the Equivalence Principle: theory, simulation and experiment. Part I: the normal modes
Recent theoretical work suggests that violation of the Equivalence Principle
might be revealed in a measurement of the fractional differential acceleration
between two test bodies -of different composition, falling in the
gravitational field of a source mass- if the measurement is made to the level
of or better. This being within the reach of ground based
experiments, gives them a new impetus. However, while slowly rotating torsion
balances in ground laboratories are close to reaching this level, only an
experiment performed in low orbit around the Earth is likely to provide a much
better accuracy.
We report on the progress made with the "Galileo Galilei on the Ground" (GGG)
experiment, which aims to compete with torsion balances using an instrument
design also capable of being converted into a much higher sensitivity space
test.
In the present and following paper (Part I and Part II), we demonstrate that
the dynamical response of the GGG differential accelerometer set into
supercritical rotation -in particular its normal modes (Part I) and rejection
of common mode effects (Part II)- can be predicted by means of a simple but
effective model that embodies all the relevant physics. Analytical solutions
are obtained under special limits, which provide the theoretical understanding.
A simulation environment is set up, obtaining quantitative agreement with the
available experimental data on the frequencies of the normal modes, and on the
whirling behavior. This is a needed and reliable tool for controlling and
separating perturbative effects from the expected signal, as well as for

A Redshift Survey of Nearby Galaxy Groups: the Shape of the Mass Density Profile
We constrain the mass profile and orbital structure of nearby groups and
clusters of galaxies. Our method yields the joint probability distribution of
the density slope n, the velocity anisotropy beta, and the turnover radius r0
for these systems. The measurement technique does not use results from N-body
simulations as priors. We incorporate 2419 new redshifts in the fields of 41
systems of galaxies with z < 0.04. The new groups have median velocity
dispersion sigma=360 km/s. We also use 851 archived redshifts in the fields of
8 nearly relaxed clusters with z < 0.1. Within R < 2 r200, the data are
consistent with a single power law matter density distribution with slope n =
1.8-2.2 for systems with sigma < 470 km/s, and n = 1.6-2.0 for those with sigma
> 470 km/s (95% confidence). We show that a simple, scale-free phase space
distribution function f(E,L^2) ~ (-E)^(alpha-1/2) L^(-2 \beta) is consistent
with the data as long as the matter density has a cusp. Using this DF, matter
density profiles with constant density cores (n=0) are ruled out with better

Velocity Dispersions of CNOC Clusters and the Evolution of the Cluster Abundance
We present the results of the analysis of the internal velocity dispersions,
\sigma_v, for the CNOC sample of distant galaxy clusters, based on an
interlopers removal algorithm, which is different from that originally applied
by Carlberg et al. (1996, C96). We find that the resulting \sigma_v values are
consistent within <10% with the original C96 estimates. This result points in
favor of a substantial robustness of currently applied methods for optical
studies of the internal cluster dynamics. The resulting distribution of
velocity dispersions is used to trace the redshift evolution of the cluster
abundance with the aim of constraining the matter density parameter, \Omega_m.
We find that constraints on \Omega_m are very sensitive to the adopted value of
\sigma_8, as obtainable from the local cluster abundance: as \sigma_8 varies
from 0.5 to 0.6 (for Omega_m=1), the best fitting Omega_m varies in the range

Discovery of luminous pulsed hard X-ray emission from anomalous X-ray pulsars 1RXS J1708-4009, 4U 0142+61 and 1E 2259+586 by INTEGRAL and RXTE
We report on the discovery of hard spectral tails for energies above 10 keV
in the total and pulsed spectra of anomalous X-ray pulsars 1RXS J1708-4009, 4U
0142+61 and 1E 2259+586 using RXTE PCA (2-60 keV) and HEXTE (15-250 keV) data
and INTEGRAL IBIS ISGRI (20-300 keV) data. Improved spectral information on 1E
1841-045 is presented. The pulsed and total spectra measured above 10 keV have
power-law shapes and there is so far no significant evidence for spectral
breaks or bends up to ~150 keV. The pulsed spectra are exceptionally hard with
indices measured for 4 AXPs approximately in the range -1.0 -- 1.0. We also
reanalyzed archival CGRO COMPTEL (0.75-30 MeV) data to search for signatures
from our set of AXPs. No detections can be claimed, but the obtained
upper-limits in the MeV band indicate that for 1RXS J1708-4009, 4U 0142+61 and

A Flux-limited Sample of Bright Clusters of Galaxies from the Southern Part of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey: the Catalog and the LogN-LogS
We describe the selection of an X-ray flux-limited sample of bright clusters
of galaxies in the southern hemisphere, based on the first analysis of the
ROSAT All-Sky Survey data (RASS1). The sample is constructed starting from an
identification of candidate clusters in RASS1, and their X-ray fluxes are
remeasured using the Steepness Ratio Technique. This method is better suited
than the RASS1 standard algorithm for measuring flux from extended sources. The
final sample is count-rate-limited in the ROSAT hard band (0.5-2.0 keV), so
that due to the distribution of NH, its effective flux limit varies between
about 3-4 x 10**-12 ergs cm**-2 s**-1 over the selected area. This covers the
Decl<2.5 deg part of the south Galactic cap region (b<-20 deg) - with the
exclusion of patches of low RASS1 exposure time and of the Magellanic Clouds
area - for a total of 8235 deg**2. 130 candidate sources fulfill our selection
criteria for bonafide clusters of galaxies in this area. Of these, 101 are
Abell/ACO clusters, while 29 do not have a counterpart in these catalogs. Of
these clusters, 126 (97%) clusters have a redshift and for these we compute an
X-ray luminosity. 20% of the cluster redshifts come from new observations, as
part of the ESO Key Program REFLEX Cluster Survey that is under completion.
Considering the intrinsic biases and incompletenesses introduced by the flux
selection and source identification processes, we estimate the overall
completeness to be better than 90%. The observed number count distribution,
LogN-LogS, is well fitted by a power law with slope alpha = 1.34 +/- 0.15 and
normalization A = 11.87 +/- 1.04 sr**-1 (10**-11 ergs cm**-2 s**-1)**alpha, in
