Housework and childcare in Italy: a persistent case of gender inequality

    Get PDF
This article focuses on the gender gap in housework and childcare in Italian couples. Italian women still carry out three-quarters of domestic work and two-thirds of childcare. We focus on three possible theoretical explanations for the persistence of the gendered division of labor: time availability, relative resources, and conformity with traditional gender ideology. Time Use data from the 2008/09 Survey edition have been used: we considered couples, married or in consensual unions, with at least one child under 14 years of age and with the mother employed

This article analyzes the emergence and the evolution of the nuclear dimension of the war in Ukraine from a triple perspective. After a brief contextualization, the study high-lights the main developments in the nuclear narratives of great powers in the wake of the war, that is, Russian Federation, United States of America, the United Kingdom, France and China. Second, the analysis focuses on the dynamics related to the exercise of nuclear power, with special care of the risks related to a nuclear escalation and to an increased vertical and horizontal proliferation. Third, the study carries out a state of matter on the international nuclear order and the non-proliferation regime, together with the crisis of the European security system

We Must Draw a Different Future! Insights from the Frontline Anti-Violence Work During the Pandemic in Italy

In this article we analyze the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the Italian anti-violence system, through the eyes of the pratictioners of anti-violence centers, who are historically at the forefront in supporting women survivors of male violence. Their perspective is particularly relevant because, in Italy, anti-violence centers hold a "borderline" position, which lies between the political role of transformation and that of an actor of the private social provider of an 'essential' public service. On the basis of international recommendations, our analysis distinguishes two main areas of intervention on which national policies have been called to intervene: on one side, the protection of women victims of violence, and on the other their empowerment. Analyzing either official statistics and data collected through an online survey addressed to the practitioners of anti-violence centers during the lockdown, we highlight strengths and weaknesses of the policy measures implemented in Italy from their situated perspective, with reference both to the protection and the empowerment of survivors

An innovative method to calibrate a spinner anemometer without the use of yaw position sensor

    Get PDF
A spinner anemometer can be used to measure the yaw misalignment and flow inclination experienced by a wind turbine. Previous calibration methods used to calibrate a spinner anemometer for flow angle measurements were based on measurements of a spinner anemometer with default settings (arbitrary values, generally k1,d  =  1 and k2,d  =  1) and a reference yaw misalignment signal measured with a yaw position sensor. The yaw position sensor is normally present in wind turbines for control purposes; however, such a signal is not always available for a spinner anemometer calibration. Therefore, an additional yaw position sensor was installed prior to the spinner anemometer calibration. An innovative method to calibrate the spinner anemometer without a yaw positions sensor was then developed. It was noted that a non-calibrated spinner anemometer that overestimates (underestimates) the inflow angle will also overestimate (underestimate) the wind speed when there is a yaw misalignment. The new method leverages the non-linearity of the spinner anemometer algorithm to find the calibration factor Fα by an optimization process that minimizes the dependency of the wind speed on the yaw misalignment. The new calibration method was found to be rather robust, with Fα values within ±2.7 % of the mean value for four successive tests at the same rotor position

Extranodal Lymphoproliferative Processes and Flow Cytometry

Objective: Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology is a safe and cost-effective technique for the diagnosis of lymphoproliferative processes, especially when correlated with clinical and imaging studies. However, cytology alone may be unable to detect a lymphoid neoplastic process, as architectural features are less obvious than in histologic preparations and, in certain cases, reactive processes may mimic lymphoma. Flow cytometry (FC) has been recognized as an important ancillary technique in the diagnosis of lymphoid neoplasms and it can be used in conjunction with FNA in the evaluation of lymphoproliferative processes. Study Design: We performed a review of the published literature concerning FC applied to the detection of salivary glands and thyroid lymphoproliferative processes, which are frequently related to autoimmune diseases and difficult to diagnose by cytomorphology alone. Results: FC is able to detect and subtype non-Hodgkin lymphomas and may contribute to the exclusion of a neoplastic process in cytologically unclear cases. Conclusions: FC can be successfully applied in the differential diagnosis of lymphoproliferative processes in the head and neck region. The FNA-FC combined approach can reduce time to therapy and may prevent unnecessary surgical biopsies
