An introduction to digitization projects conducted by public libraries: Digitization and optimization techniques

    Get PDF
It is no longer debatable that the Internet has been changing the way that we use to obtain information. Nowadays, it is really hard for researchers to write a paper without relying on electronic resources such as online databases, electronic journal and libraries due to their limited time. Therefore recent years have witnessed massive digitization projects conducted by public libraries. However, this digitalization trend necessitates addressing policy issues related to digitization and the management of electronic content. In addition, though digitization can be attractive at first, it is a costly transition in terms of staff training, equipment costs, user needs and sustainability. In this study, we propose optimization techniques to address various problems encountered during a digitization process and improve efficiency

    Get PDF
Cultural Heritage can be expressed as the ways of living developed by a community and passed on from generation to generation, including places, objects, practices, customs, values and artistic expressions. The care of its historical memory reveals the degree of civilization and morality of a city and/or country. In this regard, digitization plays a key role for conserving, maintaining and sharing cultural assets. In this study, an online access platform for conserving, maintaining and sharing the cultural assets of Edirne has been developed. Firstly, a new digitization and archiving application has been developed and integrated into existing library automation systems. Second, after obtaining their copyrights, available books, magazines and other printed materials have been scanned, indexed, abstracted and archived in the database of the online access platform. Finally, the digitized materials in the online access platform have been made publicly available. The project realized in this study will both enable to digitally conserve the available cultural assets of Edirne and hand them down to the next generations

    Get PDF
Aims. To investigate the association of the aortic propagation velocity (APV) with coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with stable angina pectoris (SAP) through SYNTAX scores (SS). ethods. The study population comprised 214 SAP subjects who received a coronary angiography. The APV and ca-rotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) were examined and SS was calculated. Subjects were grouped following specific SS criteria: SS less than 22 (low) and SS greater than or equal to 22 (high). Results. High SS subjects had lower APV compared to low SS [39.0 (32.0-51.7) vs. 55.0 (45.0-62.0) cm/s, respectively; P<0.001] and higher CIMT (0.86 +/- 0.24 vs. 0.74 +/- 0.21 mm, respectively; P<0.001). APV demonstrated a negative cor-relation with the CIMT (r=-0.239, P<0.001), age (r=-0.188, P=0.006) , and SS (r=-0.561, P <0.001) and showed a positive association with LV ejection fraction (r=0.163, P=0.017). APV, CIMT, diabetes, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and age were determined to be markers independently of a high SS. Conclusion. APV, CIMT, diabetes, LDL-C and age are independently linked to the CAD severity of SAP subjects. Decreased APV, an indicator of subclinical atherosclerosis, may independently help determine the severity of atherosclerotic CAD in SAP patients

    Get PDF
A series of new cyclotriphosphazene derivatives (2a-e) were prepared from the reactions of substituted chalcone compounds (1a-e) containing different organic side groups at para position with cyclotriphosphazene (2) bearing dioxybiphenyl. The structures of 2a-e were approved by microanalysis and spectroscopic techniques (MS, FT-IR, 31P, 1H, 13C, and 13C-APT NMR). The thermal behaviors of compounds 2a-e were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). These compounds were found to be stable up to about 300 °C. Dielectric properties of 2a-e were measured against temperature (between 25 and 160 °C at 1 kHz) and frequency (range from 100 Hz to 5 kHz at 25 °C) using means of an impedance analyzer. Among them dielectric properties of methoxy substituted cyclotriphosphazene 2e were found to be higher than other phosphazenes. The compound 2b, which has the lower dielectric property values than other phosphazenes, was selected to determine the influence of Eu+3-doping on the dielectric properties of phosphazenes and doped with Eu+3 at different mole ratios. At the dielectric properties of Eu+3-doped compound 2b (with increasing molar ratios of Eu+3) was observed an excellent increasing according to Eu+3-undoped phosphazene compounds.Sponsor Kurum: Fırat Üniversitesi Finansman Kodu: FF.12.1

    Get PDF
Objective: Urinoma is a rare entity and mainly occurs due to acute obstruction such as ureteral stone. We aimed to demonstrate factors associated with urinoma accompanied by ureteral calculi. Material and methods: Data of 550 patients who were diagnosed with ureteral stone by computed tomography (CT) were analyzed retrospectively. In 20 patients perirenal urinoma was associated with ureteral calculi (group I), whereas in other 530 patients no urinoma was detected (group II). Gender, age, size, side and localization of the stone, hydronephrosis, fever, sepsis, urinary tract infections (UTIs), hematuria, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), white blood cell (WBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), presence of diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HT) and cronic kidney disease (CKD) of the two groups were compared. Results: The average age of the patients were 46.2 (20-71) and 44.9 (10-82) years in group I and group II, respectively (p > 0.05). According to our results leukocytosis, microscopic and macroscopic hematuria, UTIs, increase of serum creatinine, BUN and CRP, diagnosis of DM and HT were significantly associated with urinoma (p < 0.05). In addition, patients with distal ureteral stones are more prone to urinoma (p = 0.001). An interesting finding of the study was that the stone size in group I (median 5 mm [range 3-8]) was significantly smaller than in group II (9.3 mm [4-25]; p = 0.001). Conclusions: Small stone size, distal localisation of the stone in ureter, leukocytosis, hematuria, UTIs, increase of serum creatinine, BUN and CRP, presence of DM and HT are associated with perirenal urinoma

PURPOSE: The objective of our study was to assess the effect of ivabra-dine on image quality of ECG-gated multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) coronary angiography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) was performed on two groups. In Group 1 (n=54), an intravenous beta-blocker was administered to patients with a heart rate >70 beats per minute (bpm) just before CTCA. In Group 2 (n=56), oral ivabradine 5 mg was administered twice a day for three days prior to CTCA examination to patients with a heart rate >70 bpm and contraindication to beta-blockers. Images acquired on two different MDCT scanners were scored in terms of image quality of the coronary artery segments using a 5-point grading scale (Grade 1, unreadable; Grade 5, excellent). RESULTS: The mean heart rates during CTCA were 64±6.7 bpm for Group 1 and 59±4.1 bpm for Group 2 (P < 0.05). Mean heart rate reduction was 9±5% and 14±8% for Groups 1 and 2, respectively (P < 0.001). A total of 880 segments were evaluated in 110 patients. When the best reconstruction interval was used, 89.8% and 95.5% of all the coronary segments showed acceptable image quality in Groups 1 and 2, respectively. Acceptable image quality of the middle right coronary artery was obtained in 78.3% of Group 1 and 92.4% of Group 2. These ratios for the other segments were 88.4% for Group 1 and 95.2% for Group 2. CONCLUSION: Reduction of heart rates with ivabradine premedication improves the image quality of CTCA. It should be considered as an alternative drug, particularly in patients with contraindications to beta-blockers. © Turkish Society of Radiology 2012

    Get PDF
Aim:Malnutrition is one of the most common clinical problems in cancer patients. Its frequency increases in hospitalized cancer patients. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the frequency of malnutrition and its effect on quality of life (QOL) in hospitalized cancer patients.Materials and Methods:In this cross-sectional study, Nutrition Risk Screening-2002 (NRS-2002) and European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC)-QLQ C30 scales were completed for patients with cancer diagnosed in the medical oncology service. The relationship between clinical and laboratory parameters, malnutrition risk and QOL was analyzed by statistical methods.Results:One-hundred thirteen patients were included in the study. According to the results of NRS-2002, 42.5% (n=48) patients were at risk of malnutrition. There was no difference between the groups in terms of gender and age. When the EORTC-QLQ C30 scale scores were compared, the risk of malnutrition had no effect on the overall health score (p=0.679). Physical function and role function scores were significantly lower in those at risk of malnutrition (worse QOL). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of other functional scales. When univariate logistic regression (LR) was applied to the factors affecting better general health score, only hemoglobin level was found to be a significant factor. Therefore, multivariate LR was not done. Conclusion:Malnutrition risk assessment should be performed routinely in every hospitalized cancer patient. Early nutritional support should be given to patients at risk. It was observed that patients with malnutrition risk had worse QOL compared to the EORTC-QLQ C30 scale

Prospective assessment of VI-RADS score in multiparametric MRI in bladder cancer: accuracy and the factors affecting the results

    Get PDF
PURPOSEWe aimed to investigate the accuracy of Vesical Imaging - Reporting and Data System (VI-RADS) in the detection of muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) and to determine which factors affect the results of this scoring system.METHODSA prospective data analysis of 80 patients who were detected to have bladder tumor was performed between March 2019 and October 2020. VI-RADS scoring was used to determine the probability of muscle invasion. The scores were compared with pathological results to evaluate the accuracy of the VI-RADS scoring system. Interobserver agreement was assessed by VI-RADS scoring of 20 randomly chosen patients by a different experienced radiologist.RESULTSUsing the VI-RADS scoring system, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) were 87.5%, 87.5%, 63.6%, and 96.6%, respectively. The interobserver agreement expressed as the interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was 0.72 (95% CI: 0.44-0.84, P < .001). In addition, the flat appearance of the tumor was an important factor affecting the accuracy of the VI-RADS score (odds ratio: 5.3 [95% CI: 1.1-27.0] and relative risk: 1.87 [95% CI: 1.24-2.82]).CONCLUSIONThe mpMRI, used in conjunction with VI-RADS, has proven to be an effective imaging method for detecting muscle invasion in cases of bladder cancer. VI-RADS scoring system can distinguish whether there is a muscle-invasive and non-muscle invasive bladder cancer with acceptable accuracy. In addition, the flat appearance of the tumor is an important entity that can affect the accuracy of the VI-RADS scoring system
