En la novela "El viaje del inglés" (2006) Carmen Riera plasma con fina ironía una carencia nacional: la dificultad, de todos conocida, que ha supuesto en España y desde hace tiempo el aprendizaje de idiomas y, en concreto, de la lengua inglesa. Todo ello a través del personaje de Laura Prats, joven frustrada por su falta de dominio del inglés, quien acaba matando a Mrs. Grose, la enajenada profesora nativa del curso al que asiste en Inglaterra. Entre evocaciones a "The Turning of the screw", el film Psicosis y diferentes teorías psicoanalíticas, la novela provoca en el lector la sensación de desorientación que demasiados españoles sienten al estar en contacto con otras lenguas, en especial la inglesa.In the so called novel "El viaje del inglés" (2006) Carmen Riera reflects with fine sarcasm on a domestic gap: the renowned Spanish inability to face the acquisition of foreign languages, specially the English learning. All that through the character of Laura Prats, the young woman frustrated with her unconstructive language achievements, who ends up killing the native instructor of the course that she attends in England to improve her English. Among evocations from "The Turning of the screw", the film Psicosis and several psychoanalytical theories, the novel generates in the reader the feeling of disorientation that too many Spaniards suffer when facing contact with other languages.peerReviewe

Learning English at the Museum: A Cross-Curricular Task Proposal for the Teaching of ESL in CSE.

Esta tarea interdisciplinar muestra el potencial del patrimonio artístico, de museos y centros de interpretación como aulas abiertas para enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas y como elemento motivador para alumnado y profesorado. Como ejemplo práctico se presenta la explotación didáctica de un mito clásico, que funciona como antesala a la visita a Emerita Augusta (Mérida, España). Asimismo, se muestran ejercicios que tienen en cuenta competencias básicas y sus indicadores de evaluación. En defi nitiva, el proyecto se plantea para acercarse al arte y a la enseñanza de inglés como segunda lengua de forma novedosa, usando espacios fuera del aula tradicional y en colaboración con instituciones museísticas

Training primary student teachers for CLIL: innovation through collaboration

The escalating number of bilingual schools in Spain has provoked an unsustainable demand of field professionals. As a result, higher education is implementing bilingual teacher training programs at the bachelor level, which are aimed at preparing primary education teachers for bilingual contexts. These degrees usually train prospective educators from a linguistic standpoint and may not guide students in methodological principles that promote successful integration of subject and language work. A shift of focus on the training of these future teachers could be adopted based on the development of student teachers’ linguistic and methodological professional capacities in order to qualify them to be successfully incorporated in a bilingual professional context. This study analyzes the implementation of a framework of collaboration between university teachers and experienced bilingual teachers. The data extracted from the opinions of the participants have resulted in a comprehensive approach constructing bilingualism on an expanded collaborative philosophy. The results obtained from the over-all experience point to the benefits of incorporating in-service teachers in the training of future bilingual teachers through the establishment of a sustainable connection in higher education

J. Swift, H. Melville y un cuento de Ana Lidia Vega: prostitución y metáforas de la migración

En diálogo con “Gulliver’s Travels” de Jonathan Swift y “Moby Dick” de Herman Melville, y teniendo en mente la imagen degradada de la Estatua de la Libertad, a la que se compara con una ramera, Ana Lydia Vega en “Encancaranublado,” nos ofrece una personal perspectiva sobre las migraciones económicas que se desplazan de Latinoamérica a Estados Unidos. La autora construye su cuento sobre dos niveles: el real y el alegórico. Ambos planos ilustran la manera en que los ricos prostituyen a los pobres y en la que, en ocasiones, los pobres se prostituyen en términos metafóricos, para alcanzar el “Pursuit of Happiness.”Reading Ana Lydia Vega´s “Encancaranublado” in the light of Jonathan Swift´s “Gulliver´s Travels” and Herman Melville´s “Moby Dick” and taking into account the degraded image of the Statue of Liberty showed in Vega´s tale, the reader will have the opportunity to reflect from a controverted personal perspective upon the migrations going from Latin-America to the United States to pursue happiness.peerReviewe

Venciendo miedos en la enseñanza de inglés a adultos. Un caso práctico: la ciudad, sus leyendas y los espacios web

La metodología presentada en este artículo pretende ayudar a solventar dos problemas educativos en el campo del L2: el sentimiento de frustración de muchos adultos españoles cuando se enfrentan al aprendizaje de una segunda lengua, sumado al hecho de que la tendencia en la enseñanza de idiomas es incluir las TICs, recursos a los que, en muchos casos, son totalmente ajenos. Así, por un lado, se intentan mejorar los problemas tradicionales que encuentra el docente en la enseñanza de una segunda lengua a adultos mediante la inclusión de los diferentes estilos de aprendizaje individuales y la consecuente adaptación del material curricular a los mismos. Todo ello representado en tres espacios educativos para facilitar el aprendizaje de adultos de una forma pausada, cómoda, familiar y motivante: un espacio educativo semivirtual donde las Tics tienen un papel importante dentro del aula tradicional, un espacio de educación abierto, donde la ciudad actúa como marco, y el aula tradicional.The methodology presented in this article aims to better two important problems in L2 education nowadays: the feeling of frustration that many adults suffer when facing the learning of a second language, besides the fact that the Tics are very important tools in the language classroom, which, unfortunately, may suppose a second barrier for those who have not been in contact with them. Thus, we aim to overcome some traditional L2 teaching issues by paying attention to the different styles adult students have and the adaptation of the syllabus to those specific needs in three learning spaces: a semivirtual learning space within the traditional classroom environment, an open learning space in the city and the regular classroom. In other words, we aim to take advantage of Tics and city architecture by creating these three learning contexts to enhance the teaching/learning of L2 and new technologies in a paused, convenient and familiar approach.peerReviewe

Report on the implementation of WorkPackage 2 "Analyses of legal, ethical, human, technical and social factors of ICT and e-learning development and intercultural competences state in every partner country" in the framework of the IRNet project

This article, prepared by an international team of researchers from different scientific areas, connected with ICT, e-learning, pedagogy, and other related disciplines, focuses on the objectives and some results of the international project IRNet. In particular, the article describes research tools, methods, and a procedure of the WP2, that is, analyses of legal, ethical, human, technical, and social factors of ICT and e-learning development, and the state of intercultural competences in partner countries: objectives, tasks, deliverables, and implementation of research trips. Researchers from Poland, the Netherlands, Spain, Slovakia, Portugal, Czech Republic, Australia, Ukraine, and Russia analyzed the results of WP2 in the context of the next stages and Work packages of IRNet project – International Research Network
