A device to characterize optical fibres
ATLAS is a general purpose experiment approved for the LHC collider at CERN.
An important component of the detector is the central hadronic calorimeter; for
its construction more than 600,000 Wave Length Shifting (WLS) fibres
(corresponding to a total length of 1,120 Km) have been used.
We have built and put into operation a dedicated instrument for the
measurement of light yield and attenuation length over groups of 20 fibres at a
time.
The overall accuracy achieved in the measurement of light yield
(attenuation length) is 1.5% (3%).
We also report the results obtained using this method in the quality control

Replica symmetric evaluation of the information transfer in a two-layer network in presence of continuous+discrete stimuli
In a previous report we have evaluated analytically the mutual information
between the firing rates of N independent units and a set of multi-dimensional
continuous+discrete stimuli, for a finite population size and in the limit of
large noise. Here, we extend the analysis to the case of two interconnected
populations, where input units activate output ones via gaussian weights and a
threshold linear transfer function. We evaluate the information carried by a
population of M output units, again about continuous+discrete correlates. The
mutual information is evaluated solving saddle point equations under the
assumption of replica symmetry, a method which, by taking into account only the
term linear in N of the input information, is equivalent to assuming the noise
to be large. Within this limitation, we analyze the dependence of the
information on the ratio M/N, on the selectivity of the input units and on the
level of the output noise. We show analytically, and confirm numerically, that
in the limit of a linear transfer function and of a small ratio between output
and input noise, the output information approaches asymptotically the
information carried in input. Finally, we show that the information loss in
output does not depend much on the structure of the stimulus, whether purely
continuous, purely discrete or mixed, but only on the position of the threshold
nonlinearity, and on the ratio between input and output noise.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure
Approximating the limit: the interaction between 'almost' and some temporal connectives in Italian
International audienceThis paper focuses on the interpretation of the Italian approximative adverb 'almost' by primarily looking at cases in which it modifies temporal connectives, a domain which, to our knowledge, has been largely unexplored thus far. Consideration of this domain supports the need for a scalar account of the semantics of (close in spirit to Hitzeman's semantic analysis of , in: Canakis et al. (eds) Papers from the 28th regional meeting of the Chicago Linguistic Society, 1992). When paired with suitable analyses of temporal connectives, such an account can provide a simple explanation of the patterns of implication that are observed when modifies locational (e.g. 'when'), directional (e.g. 'until' and 'since'), and event-sequencing temporal connectives (e.g. 'before' and 'after'). A challenging empirical phenomenon that is observed is a contrast between the modification of and by , on the one hand, and the modification of and by the same adverb, on the other. While and behave symmetrically, a puzzling asymmetry is observed between and . To explain the asymmetry, we propose an analysis of and on which the former has the meaning of the temporal comparative 'earlier', while the latter is seen as an atomic predicate denoting temporal succession between events (Del Prete, Nat Lang Semantics 16:157-203, 2008). We show that the same pattern of implication observed for is attested when modifies overt comparatives, and propose a pragmatic analysis of this pattern that uniformly applies to both cases, thus providing new evidence for the claim that is underlyingly a comparative. A major point of this paper is a discussion of the notion of scale which is relevant for the semantics of ; in particular, we show that the notion of Horn (entailment-based) scale is not well-suited for handling modification of temporal connectives, and that a more general notion of scale is required in order to provide a uniform analysis of as a cross-categorial modifier
The performance of the LHCf detector for hadronic showers
The Large Hadron Collider forward (LHCf) experiment has been designed to use
the LHC to benchmark the hadronic interaction models used in cosmic-ray
physics. The LHCf experiment measures neutral particles emitted in the very
forward region of LHC collisions. In this paper, the performances of the LHCf
detectors for hadronic showers was studied with MC simulations and beam tests.
The detection efficiency for neutrons is from 60% to 70% above 500 GeV. The
energy resolutions are about 40% and the position resolution is 0.1 to 1.3mm
depend on the incident energy for neutrons. The energy scale determined by the
MC simulations and the validity of the MC simulations were examined using 350
GeV proton beams at the CERN-SPS.Comment: 15pages, 19 figure
A theoretical model of neuronal population coding of stimuli with both continuous and discrete dimensions
In a recent study the initial rise of the mutual information between the
firing rates of N neurons and a set of p discrete stimuli has been analytically
evaluated, under the assumption that neurons fire independently of one another
to each stimulus and that each conditional distribution of firing rates is
gaussian. Yet real stimuli or behavioural correlates are high-dimensional, with
both discrete and continuously varying features.Moreover, the gaussian
approximation implies negative firing rates, which is biologically implausible.
Here, we generalize the analysis to the case where the stimulus or behavioural
correlate has both a discrete and a continuous dimension. In the case of large
noise we evaluate the mutual information up to the quadratic approximation as a
function of population size. Then we consider a more realistic distribution of
firing rates, truncated at zero, and we prove that the resulting correction,
with respect to the gaussian firing rates, can be expressed simply as a
renormalization of the noise parameter. Finally, we demonstrate the effect of
averaging the distribution across the discrete dimension, evaluating the mutual
information only with respect to the continuously varying correlate.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figure
Sequence Analysis, Kinetic Constants, and Anion Inhibition Profile of the Nacrein-Like Protein (CgiNAP2X1) from the Pacific Oyster Magallana gigas (Ex-Crassostrea gigas)
The carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1) superfamily of metalloenzymes catalyzes the hydration of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate and protons. The catalytically active form of these enzymes incorporates a metal hydroxide derivative, the formation of which is the rate-determining step of catalytic reaction, being affected by the transfer of a proton from a metal-coordinated water molecule to the environment. Here, we report the cloning, expression, and purification of a particular CA, i.e., nacrein-like protein encoded in the genome of the Pacific oyster Magallana gigas (previously known as Crassostrea gigas). Furthermore, the amino acid sequence, kinetic constants, and anion inhibition profile of the recombinant enzyme were investigated for the first time. The new protein, CgiNAP2X1, is highly effective as catalyst for the CO₂ hydration reaction, based on the measured kinetic parameters, i.e., kcat = 1.0 × 10⁶ s(-1) and kcat/KM = 1.2 × 10⁸ M(-1)·s(-1). CgiNAP2X1 has a putative signal peptide, which probably allows an extracellular localization of the protein. The inhibition data demonstrated that the best anion inhibitors of CgiNAP2X1 were diethyldithiocarbamate, sulfamide, sulfamate, phenylboronic acid and phenylarsonic acid, which showed a micromolar affinity for this enzyme, with KIs in the range of 76-87 μM. These studies may add new information on the physiological role of the molluskan CAs in the biocalcification processes
Production and covalent immobilisation of the recombinant bacterial carbonic anhydrase (SspCA) onto magnetic nanoparticles
Carbonic anhydrases (CAs; EC 4.2.1.1) are metalloenzymes with a pivotal potential role in the biomimetic
CO2 capture process (CCP) because these biocatalysts catalyse the simple but physiologically crucial reaction
of carbon dioxide hydration to bicarbonate and protons in all life kingdoms. The CAs are among the
fastest known enzymes, with kcat values of up to 106 s!1 for some members of the superfamily, providing
thus advantages when compared with other CCP methods, as they are specific for CO2. Thermostable CAs
might be used in CCP technology because of their ability to perform catalysis in operatively hard conditions,
typical of the industrial processes. Moreover, the improvement of the enzyme stability and its reuse
are important for lowering the costs. These aspects can be overcome by immobilising the enzyme on a
specific support. We report in this article that the recombinant thermostable SspCA (a-CA) from the
thermophilic bacterium Sulfurihydrogenibium yellowstonense can been heterologously produced by a highdensity
fermentation of Escherichia coli cultures, and covalently immobilised onto the surface of magnetic
Fe3O4 nanoparticles (MNP) via carbodiimide activation reactions. Our results demonstrate that using a
benchtop bioprocess station and strategies for optimising the bacterial growth, it is possible to produce at
low cost a large amount SspCA. Furthermore, the enzyme stability and storage greatly increased through
the immobilisation, as SspCA bound to MNP could be recovered from the reaction mixture by simply using
a magnet or an electromagnetic field, due to the strong ferromagnetic properties of Fe3O4
A non-uniform semantic analysis of the Italian temporal connectives Prima and Dopo
In this paper, I argue that the temporal connective prima ('before') is a comparative adverb. The argument is based on a number of grammatical facts from Italian, showing that there is an asymmetry between prima and dopo ('after'). On the ground of their divergent behaviour, I suggest that dopo has a different grammatical status from prima. I propose a semantic treatment for prima that is based on an independently motivated analysis of comparatives which can be traced back to Seuren (1973). Dopo is analyzed instead as an atomic two-place predicate which contributes a binary relation over events to the sentence meaning. The different semantic treatments of the two connectives provide an explanation for the grammatical asymmetries considered at the outset; interestingly, it also sheds some light on other asymmetries between prima and dopo which are known to hold for the English temporal connectives before and after as well: these asymmetries are related to the veridicality properties, the distribution of NPIs, and the logical properties of these connectives first described in Anscombe (1964)
Sheet metal forming optimization methodology for servo press process control improvement
In sheet metal forming manufacturing operations the use of servo presses is gaining more interest due to the opportunity to improve process performance (quality, productivity, cost reduction, etc.). It is not yet clear how to proceed in the engineering process when this type of operating machine is used to achieve the maximum possible potential of this technology. Recently, several press builders have developed gap‐ and straight‐sided metal forming presses adopting the mechanical servo‐drive technology. The mechanical servo‐drive press offers the flexibility of a hydraulic press with the speed, accuracy and reliability of a mechanical press. Servo drive presses give the opportunity to improve the productivity of process conditions and improve the quality of stamped parts. Forming simulation and numerical optimization can be useful tools to define beforehand the optimal process parameter set‐up in terms of servo press downward curve properties. This is done by carrying out a sensitivity analysis of the forming parameters having influence on said curve. The authors have developed a numerical methodology able to analyze the influence factors, for comparison with the degrees of freedom made available by the usage of a servo press, in terms of stroke profile management, to obtain an optimized process parameters combination
Off-target effects and clinical outcome in metastatic colorectal cancer patients receiving regorafenib: The TRIBUTE analysis
Regorafenib is an orally administered multikinase inhibitor indicated for the treatment of heavily pretreated metastatic colorectal cancer patients with good performance status, albeit less than 50% treated patients achieve disease stabilisation or better at the first radiological evaluation. In addition to that a particularly broad spectrum of toxicities (experienced as G3 or more NCI CTCAE graded by 50% of patients treated) have led to reconsider its widespread use in the majority of patients. We retrospectively collected data about the magnitude of off-target effects experienced during the first 8-weeks of regorafenib monotherapy and analysed their correlation with overall survival, progression free survival and disease control rate. Our findings suggest that skin rash (Exp (B): 0.52, p = 0.0133) or hypothyroidism (Exp (B): 0.11, p = 0.0349) were significantly correlated with improved overall survival at multivariate regression analysis. It was also demonstrated a statistically significant role of diarrhea as predictor of improved survival but its independent prognostic role was lost at multivariate analysis (Exp (B): 0.63, p = 0.162). This is the first analysis showing a potential correlation between the onset of these forms of side effects and regorafenib efficacy, however sample size limitations and the retrospective nature of our analysis prevent us from drawing definitive conclusion
