    On the Advantages of Using a Strict Hierarchy to Model Astrodynamical Problems

    In this paper an algorithm is developed that combines the capabilities and advantages of several different astrodynamical models of increasing complexity. Splitting these models in a strict hierarchical order yields a clearer grasp on what is available. With the effort of developing a comprehensive model overhead, the equations for the spacecraft motion in simpler models can be readily obtained as particular cases. The proposed algorithm embeds the circular and elliptic restricted three-body problems, the four-body bicircular and concentric models, an averaged n-body model, and, at the top hierarchic ladder, the full ephemeris spice-based restricted n-body problem. The equations of motion are reduced to the assignment of 13 time-varying coefficients, which multiply the states and the gravitational potential to reproduce the proper vector field. This approach is powerful because it allows, for instance, an efficient and quick way to check solutions for different dynamics and parameters. It is shown how a gradual increase of the dynamics complexity greatly improves accuracy, the chances of success and the convergence rate of a continuation algorithm, applied to low-energy transfers

    Functional Lipids in Autoimmune Inflammatory Diseases

    Lipids are apolar small molecules known not only as components of cell membranes but also, in recent literature, as modulators of different biological functions. Herein, we focused on the bioactive lipids that can influence the immune responses and inflammatory processes regulating vascular hyperreactivity, pain, leukocyte trafficking, and clearance. In the case of excessive pro-inflammatory lipid activity, these lipids also contribute to the transition from acute to chronic inflammation. Based on their biochemical function, these lipids can be divided into different families, including eicosanoids, specialized pro-resolving mediators, lysoglycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, and endocannabinoids. These bioactive lipids are involved in all phases of the inflammatory process and the pathophysiology of different chronic autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, type-1 diabetes, and systemic lupus erythematosus

    An Overview of the Measurement of Permeability of Composite Reinforcements

    Liquid composite molding (LCM) is a class of fast and cheap processes suitable for the fabrication of large parts with good geometrical and mechanical properties. One of the main steps in an LCM process is represented by the filling stage, during which a reinforcing fiber preform is impregnated with a low-viscosity resin. Darcy’s permeability is the key property for the filling stage, not usually available and depending on several factors. Permeability is also essential in computational modeling to reduce costly trial-and-error procedures during composite manufacturing. This review aims to present the most used and recent methods for permeability measurement. Several solutions, introduced to monitor resin flow within the preform and to calculate the in-plane and out-of-plane permeability, will be presented. Finally, the new trends toward reliable methods based mainly on non-invasive and possibly integrated sensors will be described

    In the framework of the Low Emittance Gun (LEG) project, high gradient acceleration of a low emittance electron beam will be necessary. In order to achieve this acceleration a -500 kV, 250 ns FWHM, pulse will be applied in between two electrodes. Those electrodes should sustain the pulsed field without arcing, must not outgass and must not emit electrons. Ion back bombardment, and dark current will be damageable to the electron source as well as for the low emittance beam.     Abstract The article describes the design and the application stage of a smart energy audit system, integrated within building, and the methodologies adopted for the detection of malfunctions of the plant. The system is set up as a "black box" consisting of a hardware aimed at logging both energy and environmental parameters and a software for the assessment of building behavior and the management of energy flows.     A Novel Approach by SPME-GC/MS for the Determination of gammahydroxybutyric acid (GHB) in Urine Samples after Conversion into gamma-butyrolactone (GBL)

    The quantitative determination of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) in urine samples is very important to assess illicit intake or administration. To this end we evaluated several analytical methods: headspace gas-chromatography coupled to flame ionization detection (HS-GC/FID), headspace gas-chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HS-GC/MS), headspace gas-chromatography coupled to solid phase microextraction and mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC/MS). All these methods were endowed with a not sufficient sensitivity, and then we moved to solid phase microextraction coupled to gas-chromatography with mass spectrometry detection (SPME-GC/MS). At first, GHB was extracted from urine with an organic solvent and analyzed after derivatization. Under these conditions, however, there was a partial overlapping between the chromatographic peak of GHB and that of urea, also extracted by the organic solvent. Then we decided to change analytical approach and to convert GHB to gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), which is not an endogenous compound. A SPME method was optimized and validated for the determination of GBL. The limit of detection (LOD) of the method resulted to be 0.25 \u3bcg/mL for GBL, corresponding to 0.5 \u3bcg/mL for GHB. The lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) was 0.4 \u3bcg/mL for GBL and 0.8 \u3bcg/mL for GHB. The LLOQ of the method resulted 10 times lower than the endogenous level, thus allowing to distinguish between physiological conditions and exogenous assumption

    Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disease associated with a variety of mutations affecting the CFTR gene. A deletion of phenylalanine 508 (F508) affects more than 70% of patients and results in unfolded proteins accumulation, originating a proteinopathy responsible for inflammation, impaired trafficking, altered metabolism, cholesterol and lipids accumulation, impaired autophagy at the cellular level. Lung inflammation has been extensively related to the accumulation of the lipotoxin ceramide. We recently proved that inhibition of ceramide synthesis by Myriocin reduces inflammation and ameliorates the defence response against pathogens infection, which is downregulated in CF.
