    Building faculty capacity for better teaching and learning

    Enhancing faculty capacity for teaching in ways that promote greater levels of student engagement and significant learning is an essential part of all other institutional changes designed to advance higher quality student learning. In this session, participants will lay out a general strategy for campus leaders to cultivate that faculty capability and then identify specific actions needed to implement such a strategy. Participants will also identify key elements of effective teaching and learning centers and brainstorm ways to build a teaching- and learning-centered institutional culture

    Doing Epistemic (In)justice to Semenya

    In August 2009, Caster Semenya won the women’s 800m event at the International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in Berlin. This victory became a global news story not because Semenya was a newcomer to athletics who had outperformed an established field – but because of the fact that before the race she had been asked to undergo tests to determine whether or not she was a woman. This article uses a hermeneutics of suspicion to argue that the controversy surrounding Semenya was based on a set of assumptions that, although incorrect, drew on hegemonic understandings of sex and gender that dominate the discourse of sport, and were adopted by the media without question. As a consequence, Semenya became the victim of what Miranda Fricker has termed epistemic injustice – a condition that arises when individuals or experiences are marginalized as a result of the absence of concepts and language that would enable us to articulate reality differently

    Evaporation Rate Study and NDMA Formation from UDMH/NO2 Reaction Products

    Laboratory samples of uns-dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) fuel/oxidizer (nitrogen dioxide) non-combustion reaction products (UFORP) were prepared using a unique permeation tube technology. Also, a synthetic UFORP was prepared from UDMH, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), dimethylammonium nitrate, sodium nitrite and purified water. The evaporation rate of UFORP and synthetic UFORP was determined under space vacuum (approx 10(exp -3) Torr) at -40 ?C and 0 ?C. The material remaining was analyzed and showed that the UFORP weight and NDMA concentration decreased over time; however, NDMA had not completely evaporated. Over 85% of the weight was removed by subjecting the UFORP to 10(-3) Torr for 7 hours at -40 ?C and 4 hours at 0 ?C. A mixture of dimethylammonium nitrate and sodium nitrite formed NDMA at a rapid rate in a moist air environment. A sample of UFORP residue was analyzed for formation of NDMA under various conditions. It was found that NDMA was not formed unless nitrite was added

    A solution to a given equation is structurally stable if it suffers only an infinitesimal change when the equation (not the solution) is perturbed infinitesimally. We have found that structural stability can be used as a velocity selection principle for propagating fronts.     Multiple Front Propagation Into Unstable States

    The dynamics of transient patterns formed by front propagation in extended nonequilibrium systems is considered. Under certain circumstances, the state left behind a front propagating into an unstable homogeneous state can be an unstable periodic pattern. It is found by a numerical solution of a model of the Fr\'eedericksz transition in nematic liquid crystals that the mechanism of decay of such periodic unstable states is the propagation of a second front which replaces the unstable pattern by a another unstable periodic state with larger wavelength. The speed of this second front and the periodicity of the new state are analytically calculated with a generalization of the marginal stability formalism suited to the study of front propagation into periodic unstable states.     To the Editor—We are writing to express concerns regarding facts reported in 2 recent Journal of Infectious Diseases articles pertaining to the ANRSLIGHT study, conducted in 18 clinical sites in France between September 2013 and May 2015. Initially, we were delighted to see the authors implemented several inclusion criteria that we believe were likely to ensure safety of participants during the analytical treatment interruption (ATI) that occurred during the trial, for example a nadir of CD4+ T-cell count of ≥300 cells/mm3 and an initial CD4+ T-cell count of ≥600/mm3. However, other aspects are dismaying, including the detailed identifying information about the index participant and partner. We fear it is possible to identify both persons from the elaborate medical and nonmedical history provided. After contacting the study Principal Investigator, Dr Lelièvre, through a European colleague, it appears there were no consents to disclose this information. Thus, we feel strongly that it was inappropriate to include such comprehensive, potentially identifying details

    Parkinson\u27s Disease, Amantadine Hydrochloride Therapy and Dopa Metabolites

    In an attempt to clarify the effect of amantadine hydrochloride therapy in Parkinson\u27s disease, dopa metabolites were measured in the urine of 15 patients who were taking this medication. The results indicated that patients on amantadine therapy had lower urinary levels of epinephrine plus norepinephrine than either normal individuals or parkinsonian patients not receiving amantadine. Patients who developed livedo reticularis during amantadine therapy showed a small but significant increase in urinary dopamine levels and a similar decrease in dopac levels, when compared to other patients on amantadine who did not develop livedo reticularis

    IntCal20 tree rings: an archaeological Swot analysis

    We undertook a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis of Northern Hemisphere tree-ring datasets included in IntCal20 in order to evaluate their strategic fit with the demands of archaeological users. Case studies on wiggle-matching single tree rings from timbers in historic buildings and Bayesian modeling of series of results on archaeological samples from Neolithic long barrows in central-southern England exemplify the archaeological implications that arise when using IntCal20. The SWOT analysis provides an opportunity to think strategically about future radiocarbon (14C) calibration so as to maximize the utility of 14C dating in archaeology and safeguard its reputation in the discipline
