Stabilising a nulling interferometer using optical path difference dithering
Context. Nulling interferometry has been suggested as the underlying
principle for the Darwin and TPF-I exoplanet research missions. Aims. There are
constraints both on the mean value of the nulling ratio, and on its stability.
Instrument instability noise is most detrimental to the stability of the
nulling performance. Methods. We applied a modified version of the classical
dithering technique to the optical path difference in the scientific beam.
Results. Using only this method, we repeatedly stabilised the dark fringe for
several hours. This method alone sufficed to remove the 1/ f component of the
noise in our setup for periods of 10 minutes, typically. These results indicate
that performance stability may be maintained throughout the long-duration data
acquisitions typical of exoplanet spectroscopy. Conclusions. We suggest that
further study of possible stabilisation strategies should be an integral part
of Darwin/TPF-I research and developmen
Tests of achromatic phase shifters performed on the SYNAPSE test bench: a progress report
The achromatic phase shifter (APS) is a component of the Bracewell nulling
interferometer studied in preparation for future space missions (viz.
Darwin/TPF-I) focusing on spectroscopic study of Earth-like exo-planets.
Several possible designs of such an optical subsystem exist. Four approaches
were selected for further study. Thales Alenia Space developed a dielectric
prism APS. A focus crossing APS prototype was developed by the OCA, Nice,
France. A field reversal APS prototype was prepared by the MPIA in Heidelberg,
Germany. Centre Spatial de Li\`ege develops a concept based on Fresnel's
rhombs. This paper presents a progress report on the current work aiming at
evaluating these prototypes on the SYNAPSE test bench at the Institut
d'Astrophysique Spatiale in Orsay, France
Transiting exoplanets from the CoRoT space mission VIII. CoRoT-7b: the first Super-Earth with measured radius
We report the discovery of very shallow (DF/F = 3.4 10-4), periodic dips in
the light curve of an active V = 11.7 G9V star observed by the CoRoT satellite,
which we interpret as due to the presence of a transiting companion. We
describe the 3-colour CoRoT data and complementary ground-based observations
that support the planetary nature of the companion. Methods. We use CoRoT color
information, good angular resolution ground-based photometric observations in-
and out- of transit, adaptive optics imaging, near-infrared spectroscopy and
preliminary results from Radial Velocity measurements, to test the diluted
eclipsing binary scenarios. The parameters of the host star are derived from
optical spectra, which were then combined with the CoRoT light curve to derive
parameters of the companion. We examine carefully all conceivable cases of
false positives, and all tests performed support the planetary hypothesis.
Blends with separation larger than 0.40 arcsec or triple systems are almost
excluded with a 8 10-4 risk left. We conclude that, as far as we have been
exhaustive, we have discovered a planetary companion, named CoRoT-7b, for which
we derive a period of 0.853 59 +/- 3 10-5 day and a radius of Rp = 1.68 +/-
0.09 REarth. Analysis of preliminary radial velocity data yields an upper limit
of 21 MEarth for the companion mass, supporting the finding.

Conclusions. CoRoT-7b is very likely the first Super-Earth with a measured radius. This object illustrates what will probably become a common situation with missions such as Kepler, namely the need to establish the planetary origin of transits in the absence of a firm radial velocity detection and mass measurement. The composition of CoRoT-7b remains loosely constrained without a precise mass. A very high surface temperature on its irradiated face, â1800â2600 K at the substellar point, and a very low one, â50 K, on its dark face assuming no atmosphere, have been derived

Community-acquired acute kidney injury induced by drugs in older patients: a multifactorial event
International audiencePurpose: Community-acquired acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) is a frequent and severe adverse drug reaction (ADR) among older patients. The combination of drugs and other CA-AKI risk factors was barely evaluated. The objectives of our study were to both accurately identify CA-AKI induced by drugs in older patients, and to describe their combination with other risk factors.Patients and methods: We conducted a retrospective, single-center study in a general hospital over a two-year period. An automated detection identified CA-AKI according to KDIGO criteria, amongst 4,767 eligible inpatient stays among patients aged 75 years or older. Two independent experts reviewed all CA-AKI events to adjudicate drug involvement (Naranjo scale), identify inappropriate prescriptions (STOPP criteria), evaluate avoidability (Hallas criteria) and identify combined risk factors.Results: An expert review confirmed 713 CA-AKI (15.0% of inpatient stays) and determined that 419 (58.8%) CA-AKI were induced by drugs. A multifactorial cause (i.e., at least one drug with a precipitating factor) was found in 63.2% of drug-induced CA-AKI. Most of the drug-induced events were avoidable (66.8%), mainly in relation to a multifactorial cause.Conclusion: Drug-induced CA-AKI were frequent, multifactorial events in hospitalized older patients and their prevention should focus on combinations with precipitating factors
Autologous stem cell transplantation as a first-line treatment strategy for chronic lymphocytic leukemia: a multicenter, randomized, controlled trial from the SFGM-TC and GFLLC.
Long-term responses have been reported after autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). We conducted a prospective, randomized trial of ASCT in previously untreated CLL patients. We enrolled 241 patients < 66 years of age with Binet stage B or C CLL. They received 3 courses of mini-CHOP (cyclophosphamide, hydroxydaunorubicin, oncovin, and prednisone/prednisolone) and then 3 courses of fludarabine. Patients in complete response (CR) were then randomized to ASCT or observation, whereas the other patients were randomized to dexamethasone, high-dose aracytin, cisplatin (DHAP) salvage followed by either ASCT or 3 courses of fludarabine plus cyclophosphamide (FC). The primary end point was event-free survival (EFS). After up-front treatment, 105 patients entered CR and were randomized between ASCT (n = 52) and observation (n = 53); their respective 3-year EFS rates were 79.8% and 35.5%; the adjusted hazard ratio was 0.3 (95% CI: 0.1-0.7; P = .003). Ninety-four patients who did not enter CR were randomized between ASCT (n = 46) and FC (n = 48); their respective 3-year EFS rates were 48.9% and 44.4%, respectively; the adjusted hazard ratio was 1.7 (95% CI: 0.9-3.2; P = .13). No difference in overall survival was found between the 2 response subgroups. In young CLL patients in CR, ASCT consolidation markedly delayed disease progression. No difference was observed between ASCT and FC in patients requiring DHAP salvage
