Educating teachers for Ontario's multi-religious classroom: accommodating religious learners and respecting student autonomy

The 2015 revisions to the Ontario teacher education program were intended to give greater attention to diversity in the Ontario classroom and provide new teachers with more knowledge of the Ontario context. Using an interpretivist methodology, a careful examination of the curriculum changes undertaken by the Ontario Ministry of Education and the Ontario College of Teachers indicates that these objectives have not been met. Despite being an integral part of the identity and experience of a large number of Ontario teachers and students, religion is not one of the diversities given attention to in the revisions. This omission has revealed a gap in the Ontario teacher education curriculum in which the religious diversity component of the Ontario context is largely ignored. The gap in teacher education has also created a misunderstanding of the nature and intent of the secular classroom where, instead of being a place where all religions are given equal attention and one that fostering healthy religious conversations, it has become an environment of fear and silence, where teacher and students are unsure of how to engage it religious conversations. My research concludes that the OCT curriculum does not provide sufficient curriculum content that addresses teacher knowledge, skills and attitudes in the area of religion, nor does it provide information about religious belief systems and world views or clarify religious language and terminology. Despite the fact that teachers and parents welcome the academic, non-confessional study of religion in the classroom, the OCT and the OME have not indicated through the revisions that this is the direction in which they intend to proceed. Enacting changes to increase the amount of time required for teacher education has not prepared teachers to address the multi-religious context of the Ontario classroom or to meet the needs of religious students

Evaluation of the ‘Live Life Better Service’, a community-based weight management service, for morbidly obese patients

Background There is a limited evidence on the effectiveness of lifestyle interventions in achieving and maintaining a significant level of weight loss in morbidly obese patients. This study evaluated the impact on weight loss and psychological well-being of a community-based weight management service for morbidly obese patients [body mass index (BMI) ≥35 with related co-morbidities or BMI >40] in Derbyshire county. Methods Five hundred and fifty-one participants entered the service since 2010, and 238 participants were still active within the service or had completed the 2-year intervention in April 2013. A one-group pre–post design was used to determine average weight loss (kg) and impact on mental health and well-being [using the validated clinical outcomes of routine evaluation-outcome measure (CORE-OM) questionnaire] among participants. Measurements were recorded at baseline, 12 weeks, 24 weeks, 1 year, 18 months and 2 years, and significance (P [less than] 0.05) was determined using the paired sample t-test. Results Statistically significant weight loss was recorded at each measurement point for those participants who remained engaged with the service (4.9 kg weight loss at 12 weeks to 18.2 kg at 2 years). There was a significant positive impact on psychological well-being demonstrated by CORE-OM score. Conclusions Findings show clinically and statistically significant weight loss among participants with improvements in physical and mental health

Reactions of Alkyl Halides in Dimethyl Sulfoxide under Friedel-Crafts Conditions

When dimethyl sulfoxide, ethyl bromide, and 5 mole­-percent of ferric chloride are heated together, a yellow precipitate is formed. The product partially decomposes at 172 degrees, with evolution of gas. It is very soluble in water, but only slightly soluble in methanol. It contains 7.18% by weight of iron (III), suggesting a compound of high molecular weight or a mixture. It appears that a Friedel-Crafts alkylation of DMSO has taken place, perhaps giving an ethyldimethyloxosulfon­ium salt, however, the IR and NMR spectra do not substantiate this. The absence of alkoxydimethylsulfonium salts in the above reaction mixture has been demonstrated. An attempt to prepare ethyldimethyloxosulfonium iodide by reacting ethyl methyl sulfoxide with methyl iodide gave no precipitate. Addition of ferric chloride to this reaction mixture followed by heating gave a crystalline solid which showed only a singlet in the NMR

Anomalous thermal expansion in 1D transition-metal cyanides: what makes the novel trimetallic cyanide Cu1/3Ag1/3Au1/3CN behave differently?

The structural dynamics of a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) mixed-metal cyanide, Cu1/3Ag1/3Au1/3CN, with intriguing thermal properties is explored. All the current known related compounds with straight-chain structures, such as group 11 cyanides CuCN, AgCN, AuCN and bimetallic cyanides MxM’1-xCN (M, M’ = Cu, Ag, Au), exhibit 1D negative thermal expansion (NTE) along the chains and positive thermal expansion (PTE) perpendicular to them. Cu1/3Ag1/3Au1/3CN exhibits similar PTE perpendicular to the chains, however PTE, rather than NTE, is also observed along the chains. In order to understand the origin of this unexpected behavior, inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements were carried out, underpinned by lattice-dynamical density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations. Synchrotron-based pair-distribution-function (PDF) analysis and 13C solid-state nuclear-magnetic-resonance (SSNMR) measurements were also performed to build an input structural model for the lattice dynamical study. The results indicate that transverse motions of the metal ions are responsible for the PTE perpendicular to the chains, as is the case for the related group 11 cyanides. However NTE along the chain due to the tension effect of these transverse motions is not observed. As there are different metal-to-cyanide bond lengths in Cu1/3Ag1/3Au1/3CN, the metals in neighboring chains cannot all be truly co-planar in a straight-chain model. For this system, DFT-based phonon calculations predict small PTE along the chain due to low-energy chain-slipping modes induced by a bond-rotation effect on the weak metallophilic bonds. However the observed PTE is greater than that predicted with the straight-chain model. Small bends in the chain to accommodate truly co-planar metals provide an alternative explanation for thermal behavior. These would mitigate the tension effect induced by the transverse motions of the metals and, as temperature increases and the chains move further apart, a straightening could occur resulting in the observed PTE. This hypothesis is further supported by unusual evolution in the phonon spectra, which suggest small changes in local symmetry with temperature

Economic Impact of Leafy Spurge on Grazing Land and Wildland in North Dakota

A variety of undesirable plants pose problems for managers of grazing land and/or wildland because they reduce the land\u27s usefulness for livestock grazing or are detrimental to its other functions, such as wildlife habitat or watershed protection. The purpose of this study was to assess the direct and secondary economic impacts of leafy spurge infestations in North Dakota. This involved estimating the extent of leafy spurge infestations on grazing land and wildland, estimating the effects of the infestation on the outputs of both types of land, estimating the direct economic effects of these changes in outputs, and using input-output analysis to estimate the secondary economic effects accruing to other sectors of the state economy
