    Demographic and social change in Vietnam

    The end of the Vietnam War in 1975 sparked Western interest in aiding in the reconstruction of Vietnam, but this came to an abrupt halt in the late 1970s when Vietnamese troops moved into Cambodia. Following the government's renewed commitment to economic reform (doi moi) in 1986, and the withdrawal of its troops from Cambodia during 1989, Vietnam is once again opening up to the Western world. However, information on social and economic conditions in contemporary Vietnam is scarce. With a total population of 64.4 million on the 1st of April 1989, Vietnam is the second largest country in Southeast Asia. Two complementary papers commenting on recent demographic and social change in Vietnam are included in this Briefing Paper. They draw on the first results of the Five Percent Sample from the 1989 Population Census, released in March this year, to profile key aspects of recent social change. Terry Hull summarises the principal trends infertility, marriage and mortality, while Dean Forbes looks at the pattern of urbanisation and urban growth, and the emerging spatial structure of the country

    Diagnostic Tools to Assess Social Media Presence for Marketers of Experiential Products: Exploring the Wine-related Social Media Interactions

    The purpose of this paper is to employ available search and analytical tools to explore the type and quality of information that can be derived from large scale social media interactions. Using graphical techniques such as wordclouds, tracking wordclouds over time, and sociograms (including name and chain social networks), a wealth of information can be derived from the candid and public social media statements and interactions that have become a part of everyday life. The first step to turning this vast source of data into usable diagnostic social media marketing information is understanding how to interrogate the social networks.  This research offers search strategies and techniques for Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. This research looks at wine-related social media posts during a one-week period in August 2016 resulting in 1450 posts (tweets) in Twitter, 10,000 posts in Instagram, and 250 posts in a Facebook group.  Specific research and marketing strategies and recommendations are directed to those in the wine industry

    Lethal Interactions Between Parasites and Prey Increase Niche Diversity in a Tropical Community

    Ecological specialization should minimize niche overlap, yet herbivorous neotropical flies (Blepharoneura) and their lethal parasitic wasps (parasitoids) exhibit both extreme specialization and apparent niche overlap in host plants. From just two plant species at one site in Peru, we collected 3636 flowers yielding 1478 fly pupae representing 14 Blepharoneura fly species, 18 parasitoid species (14 Bellopius species), and parasitoid-host associations, all discovered through analysis of molecular data. Multiple sympatric species specialize on the same sex flowers of the same fly host-plant species—which suggests extreme niche overlap; however, niche partitioning was exposed by interactions between wasps and flies. Most Bellopius species emerged as adults from only one fly species, yet evidence from pupae (preadult emergence samples) show that most Bellopiusalso attacked additional fly species but never emerged as adults from those flies

    Structural Parameters for Globular Clusters in NGC 5128. II: HST/ACS Imaging and New Clusters

    We report the first results from an imaging program with the ACS camera on HST designed to measure the structural characteristics of a wide range of globular clusters in NGC 5128, the nearest giant elliptical galaxy. From 12 ACS/WFC fields, we have measured a total of 62 previously known globular clusters and have discovered 69 new high-probability cluster candidates not found in any previous work. We present magnitudes and color indices for all of these, along with rough measurements of their effective diameters and ellipticities. The luminosity distribution of this nearly-uncontaminated sample of clusters matches well with the normal GCLF for giant elliptical galaxies, and the cluster scale size and ellipticity distributions are similar to those in the Milky Way system. The indication from this survey is that many hundreds of individual clusters remain to be found with carefully designed search techniques in the future. A very rough estimate of the total cluster population from our data suggests N_GC = 1500 in NGC 5128, over all magnitudes and within a projected radius R = 25' from the galaxy center.Comment: AASTex, 33 preprint pages including 9 Figures.     The crime drop and the security hypothesis

    Major crime drops were experienced in the United States and most other industrialised countries for a decade from the early to mid-1990s. Yet there is little agreement over explanation or lessons for policy. Here it is proposed that change in the quantity and quality of security was a key driver of the crime drop. From evidence relating to vehicle theft in two countries it is concluded that electronic immobilisers and central locking were particularly effective. It is suggested that reduced car theft may have induced drops in other crime including violence. From this platform a broader security hypothesis, linked to routine activity and opportunity theory, is outlined

    Structural parameters for globular clusters in NGC 5128. III. ACS surface-brightness profiles and model fits

    We present internal surface-brightness profiles, based on HST/ACS imaging in the F606W bandpass, for 131 globular cluster (GC) candidates with luminosities 10^4 - 3 x 10^6 solar, in the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128. Several structural models are fit to the profile of each cluster and combined with mass-to-light ratios from population-synthesis models, to derive a catalogue of fundamental structural and dynamical parameters parallel in form to the catalogues recently produced by McLaughlin & van der Marel and Barmby et al. for GCs and massive young star clusters in Local Group galaxies. As part of this, we provide corrected and extended parameter estimates for another 18 clusters in NGC 5128, which we observed previously. We show that, like GCs in the Milky Way and some of its satellites, the majority of globulars in NGC 5128 are well fit by isotropic Wilson models, which have intrinsically more distended envelope structures than the standard King lowered isothermal spheres. We use our models to predict internal velocity dispersions for every cluster in our sample. These predictions agree well in general with the observed dispersions in a small number of clusters for which spectroscopic data are available.
