Shadowing and Absorption Effects on J/psi Production in dA Collisions
We study medium modifications of J/psi production in cold nuclear media in
deuterium-nucleus collisions. We discuss several parameterizations of the
modifications of the parton densities in the nucleus, known as shadowing, an
initial-state effect. We also include absorption of the produced J/psi by
nucleons, a final-state effect. Both spatially homogeneous and inhomogeneous
shadowing and absorption are considered. We use the number of binary
nucleon-nucleon collisions as a centrality measure. Results are presented for
d+Au collisions at sqrt{S_{NN}} = 200 GeV and for d+Pb collisions at
sqrt{S_{NN}} = 6.2 TeV. To contrast the centrality dependence in pA and dA
collisions, we also present pPb results at sqrt{S_{NN}} = 8.8 TeV.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, uses revte
Color Screening and the Suppression of the Charmonium State Yield in Nuclear Reactions
We discuss the new data for the production of the meson in pA
collisions at 450 GeV at CERN-SPS (of the NA50-collaboration) [1]. We extract
from the CERN data mb under the assumption that the
is produced as a result of the space-time evolution of a point-like
pair which expands with time to the full size of the charmonium
state. In the analysis we assume the existence of a relationship between the
distribution of color in a hadron and the cross section of its interaction with
a nucleon. However, our result is rather sensitive to the pattern of the
expansion of the wave packet and significantly larger values of are not ruled out by the data. We show that recent CERN data confirm the
suggestion of [2] that color fluctuations of the strengths in
charmonium-nucleon interaction are the major source of suppression of the
yield as observed at CERN in both pA and AA collisions.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures (one with color

A reexamination of hadronic comover scattering indicates that this mechanism
cannot explain the observed suppression in Pb+Pb interactions. The

Nuclear Charge Density Distributions from Elastic Electron Scattering Data
The model independent procedure of extracting charge density distributions
from elastic electron scattering data is investigated. The charge density
distributions are expanded on an orthonormal basis and the parameters of the
expansions are fixed by the comparison with the experimental data. Two bases
with different analytical properties (Fourier-Bessel and Hermite) are used.
This allows us to disentangle the uncertainties coming from the choice of the
expansion basis from those intrinsic to the extraction procedure. We design a
set of tests to select the number of the expansion coefficients adequate for a
proper description of the data. The procedure is applied to elastic data
measured on C, Ca and Pb nuclei.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures available on request to [email protected], to

Flare energetics
In this investigation of flare energetics, researchers sought to establish a comprehensive and self-consistent picture of the sources and transport of energy within a flare. To achieve this goal, they chose five flares in 1980 that were well observed with instruments on the Solar Maximum Mission, and with other space-borne and ground-based instruments. The events were chosen to represent various types of flares. Details of the observations available for them and the corresponding physical parameters derived from these data are presented. The flares were studied from two perspectives, the impulsive and gradual phases, and then the results were compared to obtain the overall picture of the energics of these flares. The role that modeling can play in estimating the total energy of a flare when the observationally determined parameters are used as the input to a numerical model is discussed. Finally, a critique of the current understanding of flare energetics and the methods used to determine various energetics terms is outlined, and possible future directions of research in this area are suggested
Experimental study of photon beam polarimeter based on nuclear e+e- pair production in an amorphous target
The experimental method of the linearly polarized photons polarimetry,using
incoherent e+e- pair production process has been investigated on the beam of
coherent bremsstrahlung (CB) photons in the energy range of 0.9-1.1 GeV at the

Deuteron Photodissociation in Ultraperipheral Relativistic Heavy-Ion on Deuteron Collisions
In ultraperipheral relativistic deuteron on heavy-ion collisions, a photon
emitted from the heavy nucleus may dissociate the deuterium ion. We find
deuterium breakup cross sections of 1.38 barns for deuterium-gold collisions at
a center of mass energy of 200 GeV per nucleon, as studied at the Relativistic
Heavy Ion Collider, and 2.49 barns for deuterium-lead collisions at a center of
mass energy of 6.2 TeV, as proposed for the Large Hadron Collider. This cross
section includes an energy-independent 140 mb contribution from hadronic
diffractive dissociation. At the LHC, the cross section is as large as that of
hadronic interactions. The estimated error is 5%. Deuteron dissociation could
be used as a luminosity monitor and a `tag' for moderate impact parameter

A Pair Polarimeter for Linearly Polarized High Energy Photons
A high quality beam of linearly polarized photons of several GeV will become
available with the coherent bremsstrahlung technique at JLab. We have developed
a polarimeter which requires about two meters of the beam line, has an
analyzing power of 20% and an efficiency of 0.02%. The layout and first results
of a polarimeter test on the laser back-scattering photon beam at SPring-8/LEPS
are presented

J/\Psi production, polarization and Color Fluctuations
The hard contributions to the heavy quarkonium-nucleon cross sections are
calculated based on the QCD factorization theorem and the nonrelativistic
quarkonium model. We evaluate the nonperturbative part of these cross sections
which dominates at GeV at the Cern Super Proton
Synchrotron (SPS) and becomes a correction at TeV at
the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). \J production at the CERN SPS is well
described by hard QCD, when the larger absorption cross sections of the
states predicted by QCD are taken into account. We predict an -dependent
polarization of the states. The expansion of small wave packets is
