Mechanism of combustion of solid carbon
Measurements of temperature distribution in the reaction zone above the surface of carbon were studied. Using a method of spectral line reversal it was found that the minimum temperature in that zone is several hundred degrees higher than that of the carbon surface
Aspects of the Life History of the Pond Smelt (Hypomesus olidus) in the Yukon and Northwest Territories
The pond smelt (Hypomesus olidus) has a limited North American distribution, being restricted to the west coast of Alaska and the drainage of the lower Mackenzie River, N.W.T. This study examined an isolated population in a small tundra lake on the Yukon coastal plain. Otolith interpretation revealed that most adult fish sampled in Lake 100 were age 4+ and 5+ years, but a few individuals lived to age 8+ and 9+. Full maturity was not reached until age 5+ and repeat spawning was common. The sex ratio was skewed in favour of females. Growth was found to be slower in the Yukon population than in Alaskan and Japanese lakes. Some stunting was evident in Lake 100 pond smelt, but otherwise their meristic and morphometric characteristics corresponded with those from elsewhere. The pond smelt were primarily planktivorous in Lake 100 and there appeared to be no significant predation on them, but in the Mackenzie delta and elsewhere they are utilized as a forage species.Key words: pond smelt, life history, food habits, Hypomesus olidus, YukonMots clés: éperian à petite bouche, biologie, alimentation, Hypomesus olidus, Yukon, cycle vita
Average probability of failure on demand estimation for burner management systems
Proper estimation of Safety Integrity Level (SIL) depends largely on accurate estimation of Safety performance in terms of average Probability of Failure on Demand, (PFDavg). For complex architectures of logic solvers, sensors, and valves, this can be calculated by distinguishing combinations of subsystems with basic (K-out-of-N) KooN approach for identical components. In the case of the typical configurations of valves for a burner management systems with non-identical subsystem configurations the KooN approach does not apply. Hence, it becomes an issues to calculate the correct safety performance since some of the established methods give too optimistic results due to lack of Common cause Failure information and data on non-identical components or sub-systems. This paper formulates a Markov model for determination of average probability of failure on demand for non-identical components and also proposes a more conservative lowest failure rate approach and maximum beta factor contrary to pragmatic minimum or average beta for correct estimation of average probability of failure on demand. It can be deduced that the measure of safety performance for components or subsystems with unequal failure rates depends largely on common cause failure, but a single beta factor is not appropriate to model the commonality of the failure. The result revealed that both geometric mean and lowest failure rate approaches result in different values with the lowest failure rate being the most conservative and optimistic result.Keywords: burner management systems, probability of failure on demand, common cause failure, KooN configurations, and lowest failure rate, Markov Analysi
Grid Minors of Graphs on the Torus
AbstractWe show that any graph G embedded on the torus with face-width r ≥ 5 contains the toroidal ⌊23r⌋-grid as a minor. (The face-width of G is the minimum value of |C∩G|, where C ranges over all homotopically nontrivial closed curves on the torus. The toroidal k-grid is the product Ck × Ck of two copies of a k-circuit Ck.) For each fixed r ≥ 5, the value ⌊23r⌋ is largest possible. This applies to a theorem of Robertson and Seymour showing, for each graph H embedded on any compact surface S, the existence of a number ρH such that every graph G embedded on S with face-width at least ρH contains H as a minor. Our result implies that for H = Ck × Ck embedded on torus, ρH ≔ ⌈32k⌉ is the smallest possible value. Our proof is based on deriving a result in the geometry of numbers. It implies that for any symmetric convex body K in R2 one has λ2(K)·λ1(K*) ≤ 32 and that this bound is smallest possible. (Here λi(K) denotes the minimum value of λ such that λ·K contains i linearly independent integer vectors. K* is the polar convex body.

Collective low lying levels of light and medium Xenon isotopes are deduced
from the Generalized Bohr Hamiltonian (GBH). The microscopic seven functions
entering into the GBH are built from a deformed mean field of the Woods-Saxon
type. Theoretical spectra are found to be close to the ones of the experimental
data taking into account that the calculations are completely microscopic, that

Transcriptomic analysis of field-droughted sorghum from seedling to maturity reveals biotic and metabolic responses.
Drought is the most important environmental stress limiting crop yields. The C4 cereal sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is a critical food, forage, and emerging bioenergy crop that is notably drought-tolerant. We conducted a large-scale field experiment, imposing preflowering and postflowering drought stress on 2 genotypes of sorghum across a tightly resolved time series, from plant emergence to postanthesis, resulting in a dataset of nearly 400 transcriptomes. We observed a fast and global transcriptomic response in leaf and root tissues with clear temporal patterns, including modulation of well-known drought pathways. We also identified genotypic differences in core photosynthesis and reactive oxygen species scavenging pathways, highlighting possible mechanisms of drought tolerance and of the delayed senescence, characteristic of the stay-green phenotype. Finally, we discovered a large-scale depletion in the expression of genes critical to arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis, with a corresponding drop in AM fungal mass in the plants' roots

©2005 American Physical SocietyExcited states in ¹¹³In were populated via the reactions ¹⁰⁰Mo(¹⁸O,p4n)¹¹³In and ¹¹⁰Pd(7Li,4n)¹¹³In. The two known ΔJ = 2 intruder bands, based on the πg7/2 ⊗ d5/2 and πh11/2 orbitals, have been extended by 8¯h to spins (49/2+)¯h and (55/2−)¯h, respectively. The previous finding of three sequences of ΔJ = 1 γ -ray transitions has been confirmed. A self-consistent cranked shell-model calculation gives a good description of the contrasting alignment patterns of the two ΔJ = 2 intruder bands. The intruder bands, the known sequences ofM1 transitions, and spherical levels together represent a coexistence of three different excitation modes in this nucleus.S. Naguleswaran, R. S. Standardised lesion segmentation for imaging biomarker quantitation: a consensus recommendation from ESR and EORTC.
BACKGROUND: Lesion/tissue segmentation on digital medical images enables biomarker extraction, image-guided therapy delivery, treatment response measurement, and training/validation for developing artificial intelligence algorithms and workflows. To ensure data reproducibility, criteria for standardised segmentation are critical but currently unavailable. METHODS: A modified Delphi process initiated by the European Imaging Biomarker Alliance (EIBALL) of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Imaging Group was undertaken. Three multidisciplinary task forces addressed modality and image acquisition, segmentation methodology itself, and standards and logistics. Devised survey questions were fed via a facilitator to expert participants. The 58 respondents to Round 1 were invited to participate in Rounds 2-4. Subsequent rounds were informed by responses of previous rounds. RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: Items with ≥ 75% consensus are considered a recommendation. These include system performance certification, thresholds for image signal-to-noise, contrast-to-noise and tumour-to-background ratios, spatial resolution, and artefact levels. Direct, iterative, and machine or deep learning reconstruction methods, use of a mixture of CE marked and verified research tools were agreed and use of specified reference standards and validation processes considered essential. Operator training and refreshment were considered mandatory for clinical trials and clinical research. Items with a 60-74% agreement require reporting (site-specific accreditation for clinical research, minimal pixel number within lesion segmented, use of post-reconstruction algorithms, operator training refreshment for clinical practice). Items with ≤ 60% agreement are outside current recommendations for segmentation (frequency of system performance tests, use of only CE-marked tools, board certification of operators, frequency of operator refresher training).
