Genetic characterization of Acipenser sturio L., 1758 in relation to other sturgeon species using satellite DNA
We obtained and characterized a satellite (st) DNA family named HindIII from the genomes of the Adriatic sturgeon Acipenser naccarii Bonaparte, 1836, Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii Brandt, 1869, and beluga sturgeon Huso huso (L., 1758). We did not find this stDNA in the genome of the Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser sturio L., 1758. The comparison of sturgeon species using the HindIII stDNA revealed the following: (1) A. naccarii and A. baerii are closely related; (2) H. huso appears to belong to the genus Acipenser and, probably, Huso is not a separate genus within the Acipenserinae; (3) A. sturio differs from the other three studied species by the absence of the HindIII stDNA and, most likely, it represents a separate evolutionary lineage within the Acipenseridae. The data on the HindIII stDNA can be successfully used for species identification of sturgeon specimens captured in different European regions.
Global search metaheuristics for planning transportation of multiple petroleum products in a multi-pipeline system
The objective of this work is to develop several metaheuristic algorithms to improve the efficiency of the MILP algorithm used for planning transportation of multiple petroleum products in a multi-pipeline system. The problem involves planning the optimal sequence of products assigned to each new package pumped through each polyduct of the network in order to meet product demands at each destination node before the end of the planning horizon. All the proposed metaheuristics are combinations of improvement methods applied to solutions resulting from different construction heuristics. These improvements are performed by searching the neighborhoods generated around the current solution by different Global Search Metaheuristics: Multi-Start Search, Variable Neighborhood Search, Taboo Search and Simulated Annealing. Numerical examples are solved in order to show the performance of these metaheuristics against a standard commercial solver using MILP. Results demonstrate how these metaheuristics are able to reach better solutions in much lower computational time. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
Death in the Scottish curriculum : denying or confronting?
The important role of schools in supporting children experiencing bereavement is established, yet less is known about how school curricula include death as part of life and this limits our understanding of the systemic structures that shape children’s knowledge and experience of death. To address this gap, this paper discusses an analysis of the Scottish curriculum to explore the extent to which death features in compulsory education for children aged 3 to 15 years. The findings show that whilst death is present across the curricula, certain types of ‘knowing’ death are promoted, largely situated across religious teaching, which may limit children’s engagement with the multiple and complex ways in which death features across individual, social, physical, and relational domains. By integrating the concepts of death systems and death ambivalence, the paper develops new knowledge on the interplay between curricula and sense making around death in children’s lives that has practical utility
A mathematical model for planning transportation of multiple petroleum products in a multi-pipeline system.
A multiproduct Pipeline provides an economic way to transport large Volumes of refined petroleum products over long distances. In such a pipeline, different products are pumped back-to-back without any separation device between them. Sometimes, multiproduct pipelines can be connected together, resulting in a more complex system commonly named multi-pipeline system. This paper proposes a new discrete mathematical approach to solve short-term operational planning Of multi-pipeline systems for refined products. This model is based on a discrete approach that divides both the planning horizon into time intervals of equal duration and the individual polyducts into packages of equal volume each containing a single product. Numerical examples are solved in order to show the performance of the proposed model. All the instances are implemented with the OPL modeling language running CPLEX as solver
Morphometric and genetic analysis as proof of the existence of two sturgeon species in the Guadalquivir river
Morphometric and genetic methods were used
to identify two sturgeon species, Acipenser naccarii Bo-
naparte, 1836, and A. sturio Linnaeus, 1758, captured in
some of the principal rivers of the Iberian Peninsula,
including the Guadalquivir. After measuring 25 Iberian
specimens from a ®shery and several Spanish and Por-
tuguese museums and applying stepwise discriminant
analysis (SDA), four specimens preserved in di erent
museums [two specimens from the Guadalquivir river
(EBD-8173 and EBD-8174), one specimen from the
Tagus river (MUC1) and one specimen from the
Mondego river (MUC46B)], as well as ®ve specimens
captured in the Guadalquivir river in the 1940s but not
preserved (CM1, CM2, CM3, CM4 and CM5), were
identi®ed as A. naccarii. After cloning and character-
isation of a satellite-DNA family, HindIII, from
A. naccarii genome, its absence from the genome of
A. sturio was determined. Using this satellite-DNA as a
genetic marker and by means of dot-blotting, we dem-
onstrate that the DNA of the two specimens captured
during the mid-1970s in the Guadalquivir river cross-
hybridised with HindIII satellite-DNA sequences of
A. naccarii. We conclude that A. naccarii is autochtho-
nous to the Iberian Peninsula and is not, as was previ-
ously believed, endemic to the Adriatic Sea
Modeling and simulation of a gas distribution pipeline network
This research study focuses on the modeling and simulation of a gas distribution pipeline network with a special emphasis on gas ducts. Gas ducts are the most important components of such kind of systems since they define the major dynamic characteristics. Isothermal, unidirectional flow is usually assumed when modeling the gas flow through a gas duct. This paper presents two simplified models derived from the set of partial differential equations governing the dynamics of the process. These models include the inclination term, neglected in most related papers. Moreover, two numerical schemes are presented for the integration of such models. Also, it is shown how the pressure drop along the pipe has a strong dependency with the inclination term. To solve the system dynamics through the proposed numerical schemes a based MATLAB-Simulink library was built. With this library it is possible to simulate the behavior of a gas distribution network from the individual simulation of each component. Finally, the library is tested through three application examples, and results are compared with the existing ones in the literature
Pagurta: An interspecific hybrid of common seabream Pagrus pagrus (L., 1758) female and banded seabream males Pagrus auriga Valenciennes, 1843 male: phenotypic and molecular characterization
Hybrids are of great interest in aquaculture. In the present study, we report for the first time an interespecific hybrid between common seabream Pagrus pagrus (L., 1758) females and red banded seabream Pagrus auriga (Valenciennes, 1843) males, which has been named the pagurta. This hybrid was detected in natural spawns during the period from March to April 2004. Phenotipically, the hybrid possessed morphological and meristic characteristics of both parental species. Mitochondrial and nuclear (microsatellite and satellite) molecular markers were used to confirm they were hybrids. The reciprocal cross was not detected.
