Natural zeolites and white wines from Campania region (Southern Italy): a new contribution for solving some oenological problems
The purpose of this research is to provide a new mixture of Campanian zeolitized tuffs for solving two specific problems in the production of white wines: the protein and tartaric stability. In fact, a very frequent cause of turbidity and formation of organic deposits in white wines is the occurrence of thermolabile and thermostable proteins colloidal suspensions which precipitate in time, especially in summertime and during the storage and transport. Normally, to mitigate this risk wine producers use organic and inorganic stabilizers and clarifiers. The best known treatment, recognized also by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) foresees the use of bentonite with a montmorillonite content not lower than 80%. The present paper aims at evaluating the use of two high zeolite grade Italian volcanoclastites such as the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (NYT) and the Yellow Facies of the Campanian Ignimbrite (YFCI), in the treatment of three peculiar white wines of the Campanian region (Southern Italy): Falanghina, Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo. Granulates were produced starting from tuff blocks as provided by quarries. Some grain size fractions have been prepared to investigate the zeolite content (phillipsite + chabazite + analcime) by X-ray diffraction (XRD). A 2-5 mm grain size fraction was chosen for NYT and a 5-10 mm for YFCI. Three Campanian monocultivar white wines were used for the test: the Falanghina 2006 vintage, the Fiano di Avellino DOCG 2007 vintage, and the Greco di Tufo DOCG 2008 vintage. 48 samples with mixture of the zeolitized tuffs, 1 sample with mixture of a synthetic zeolite A and 1 sample with mixture of a commercial sodium activated bentonite were prepared. ICP-OES analysis for the determination of ECEC, Ion Chromatography (IC) analyses for the determination of some major cations and Turbidimetric tests for the definition of the protein stabilization process before and after treatments were also carried out. It was evidenced that high zeolitized tuff/wine ratios enable the protein stabilization whereas a significant decrease of potassium ion after the treatment with a zeolite-rich powder improves the tartaric stability, a serious problem in all the wine productions. The results of these tests refer to a laboratory scale research. A transfer of the experiment to a pilot plant scale is in progress
Effect of Scatterering on Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) signals
We develop a computational framework to examine the factors responsible for
scattering-induced distortions of coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS)
signals in turbid samples. We apply the Huygens-Fresnel Wave-based Electric
Field Superposition (HF-WEFS) method combined with the radiating dipole
approximation to compute the effects of scattering-induced distortions of focal
excitation fields on the far-field CARS signal. We analyze the effect of
spherical scatterers, placed in the vicinity of the focal volume, on the CARS
signal emitted by different objects (2{\mu}m diameter solid sphere, 2{\mu}m
diameter myelin cylinder and 2{\mu}m diameter myelin tube). We find that
distortions in the CARS signals arise not only from attenuation of the focal
field but also from scattering-induced changes in the spatial phase that
modifies the angular distribution of the CARS emission. Our simulations further
show that CARS signal attenuation can be minimized by using a high numerical
aperture condenser. Moreover, unlike the CARS intensity image, CARS images
formed by taking the ratio of CARS signals obtained using x- and y-polarized
input fields is relatively insensitive to the effects of spherical scatterers.
Our computational framework provide a mechanistic approach to characterizing
scattering-induced distortions in coherent imaging of turbid media and may
inspire bottom-up approaches for adaptive optical methods for image correction.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure
Theoretical evidence for efficient p-type doping of GaN using beryllium
Ab initio calculations predict that Be is a shallow acceptor in GaN. Its
thermal ionization energy is 0.06 eV in wurtzite GaN; the level is valence
resonant in the zincblende phase. Be incorporation is severely limited by the
formation of Be_3N_2. We show however that co-incorporation with reactive
species can enhance the solubility. H-assisted incorporation should lead to
high doping levels in MOCVD growth after post-growth annealing at about 850 K.
Be-O co-incorporation produces high Be and O concentrations at MBE growth

The reuse of sediments dredged from artificial reservoirs for beach nourishment: Technical and economic feasibility
Sedimentation has significant impacts on the useful capacity of an artificial reservoir, a resource to preserve. Interventions of dredging are therefore often unavoidable, even because decommissioning of dams is often impossible in many contexts and entails high costs. Dredging generates an undesired accumulation of materials that represent an environmental cost, but that could be used as intermediate products in other processes, such as beach nourishment. The study develops a method for the evaluation of the feasibility of an investment aimed at coastal nourishment with sediments dredged from artificial reservoirs. The method considers the set of technical conditions that make such use possible. The presence of economies of scope, with environmental diseconomies utilized as joint product, modifies the evaluation approach. The results of the approach show a possible environmental and economic sustainability of the proposed investment even in the presence of highly unfavorable scenarios. The study applies the feasibility appraisal to the case of the Guardialfiera reservoir in Molise, Italy
Efficacy and toxicity of bevacizumab in recurrent ovarian disease: an update meta-analysis on phase III trials
Background: To analyze the efficacy and toxicity of bevacizumab on survival outcomes in recurrent ovarian cancer.
Results: Bevacizumab was associated with significant improvement of PFS and OS compared with standard treatment with HRs of 0.53 (95% CI 0.44 - 0.63; p < 0.00001) and 0.87 (95% CI, 0.77 to 0.99; p = 0.03), respectively.
Bevacizumab increased the incidence of G3/G4 hypertension (RR 19.01, 95% CI 7.77 - 46.55; p < 0.00001), proteinuria (RR 17.31, 95% CI 5.42 - 55.25; p < 0.00001), arterial thromboembolic events (ATE) (RR 4.99, 95% CI 1.29 - 19.27; p = 0.02) and bleeding (RR 3.14, 95% CI 1.35 - 7.32; p = 0.008).
Materials and Methods: Three randomized phase III trials representing 1502 patients were identified.
Pooled hazard ratio (HR), odd ratio (OR), risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using fixed or random effects model.
Conclusions: Adding bevacizumab to standard chemotherapy improved ORR, PFS and OS, and it had a higher, but manageable, incidence of toxicities graded 3 to 4
T-Dualities and Courant Algebroid Relations
We develop a new approach to T-duality based on Courant algebroid relations
which subsumes the usual T-duality as well as its various generalisations.
Starting from a relational description for the reduction of exact Courant
algebroids over foliated manifolds, we introduce a weakened notion of
generalised isometries that captures the generalised geometry counterpart of
Riemannian submersions when applied to transverse generalised metrics. This is
used to construct T-dual backgrounds as generalised metrics on reduced Courant
algebroids which are related by a generalised isometry. We prove an existence
and uniqueness result for generalised isometric exact Courant algebroids coming
from reductions. We demonstrate that our construction reproduces standard
T-duality relations based on correspondence spaces. We also describe how it
applies to generalised T-duality transformations of almost para-Hermitian

Colposcopy Accuracy and Diagnostic Performance: A Quality Control and Quality Assurance Survey in Italian Tertiary-Level Teaching and Academic Institutions—The Italian Society of Colposcopy and Cervico-Vaginal Pathology (SICPCV)
Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) principles are essential for effective cervical cancer prevention. Being a crucial diagnostic step, colposcopy’s sensitivity and specificity improvements are strongly advocated worldwide since inter- and intra-observer differences are the main limiting factors. The objective of the present study was the evaluation of colposcopy accuracy through the results of a QC/QA assessment from a survey in Italian tertiary-level academic and teaching hospitals. A web-based, user-friendly platform based on 100 colposcopic digital images was forwarded to colposcopists with different levels of experience. Seventy-three participants were asked to identify colposcopic patterns, provide personal impressions, and indicate the correct clinical practice. The data were correlated with a panel of experts’ evaluation and with the clinical/pathological data of the cases. Overall sensitivity and specificity with the threshold of CIN2+ accounted for 73.7% and 87.7%, respectively, with minor differences between senior and junior candidates. Identification and interpretation of colposcopic patterns showed full agreement with the experts’ panel, ranging from 50% to 82%, in some instances with better results from junior colposcopists. Colposcopic impressions correlated with a 20% underestimation of CIN2+ lesions, with no differences linked to level of experience. Our results demonstrate the good diagnostic performance of colposcopy and the need for improving accuracy through QC assessments and adhesion to standard requirements and recommendations
Ostial plication: a rarely reported cause of sudden death
We report a rare case of ostial plication as a potential cause of sudden death. Very few reports and images are available in the specialized literature regarding this anomaly. Ostial plication may be a source of sudden death or cause of death when no other significant autopsy findings are present
New Constructions for Mechanisms with Verification
A social choice function A is implementable with verification
if there exists a payment scheme P such that (A,P) is a truthful mechanism for verifiable agents [Nisan and Ronen, STOC 99]. We give a simple sufficient condition for a social choice function to be implementable with verification for comparable types. Comparable types are a generalization of the well-studied one-parameter agents. Based on this
characterization, we show that a large class of objective functions μ admit social choice functions that are implementable with verification and minimize (or maximize) μ.We then focus on the well-studied case of oneparameter
agents.We give a general technique for constructing efficiently
computable social choice functions that minimize or approximately minimize objective functions that are non-increasing and neutral (these are functions that do not depend on the valuations of agents that have no
work assigned to them). As a corollary we obtain efficient online and offline mechanisms with verification for some hard scheduling problems on related machines
