Decidual endothelial cells express surface-bound C1q as a molecular bridge between endovascular trophoblast and decidual endothelium
This study was prompted by the observation that decidual endothelial cells (DECs), unlike endothelial cells (ECs) of blood vessels in normal skin, kidney glomeruli and brain, express surface-bound C1q in physiologic pregnancy. This finding was unexpected, because deposits of C1q are usually observed in pathologic conditions and are associated with complement activation. In the case of DECs, we failed to detect immunoglobulins and C4 co-localized with C1q on the cell surface. Surprisingly, DECs expressed mRNA for the three chains of C1q and secreted detectable level of this component in serum-free medium. The ability to synthesize C1q is acquired by DECs during pregnancy and is not shared by ECs obtained from endometrium and from other sources. Cell-associated C1q has a molecular weight similar to that of secreted C1q and is released from DECs following treatment with heparinase or incubation at low pH. This suggests that C1q binds to DECs and it is not constitutively expressed on the cell surface. C1q is localized at contact sites between endovascular trophoblast and DECs and acts as an intercellular molecular bridge because adhesion of endovascular trophoblast to DECs was inhibited by antibodies to C1q and to a receptor recognizing its globular portion expressed on trophoblast. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The GeV to TeV connection in the environment of SNR IC 443
We have recently interpreted the source MAGIC J0616+225 as a result of
delayed TeV emission of cosmic-rays diffusing from IC 443 and interacting with
a cloud in the foreground of the remnant. This model was used to make
predictions for future observations, especially those to be made with the Fermi
satellite. Just recently, AGILE, Fermi, and VERITAS have released new results
of their observations of IC 443. In this work, we compare them with the
predictions of our model, exploring the GeV to TeV connection in this region of
space. We use Fermi data to consider the possibility of constraining the
cosmic-ray diffusion features of the environment. We analyze the cosmic-ray
distributions, their interactions, and a possible detection of the SNR

Two-domains bulklike Fermi surface of Ag films deposited onto Si(111)-(7x7)
Thick metallic silver films have been deposited onto Si(111)-(7x7) substrates
at room temperature. Their electronic properties have been studied by using
angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). In addition to the
electronic band dispersion along the high-symmetry directions, the Fermi
surface topology of the grown films has been investigated. Using ARPES, the
spectral weight distribution at the Fermi level throughout large portions of
the reciprocal space has been determined at particular perpendicular
electron-momentum values. Systematically, the contours of the Fermi surface of
these films reflected a sixfold symmetry instead of the threefold symmetry of
Ag single crystal. This loss of symmetry has been attributed to the fact that
these films appear to be composed by two sets of domains rotated 60 from
each other. Extra, photoemission features at the Fermi level were also
detected, which have been attributed to the presence of surface states and
\textit{sp}-quantum states. The dimensionality of the Fermi surface of these
films has been analyzed studying the dependence of the Fermi surface contours
with the incident photon energy. The behavior of these contours measured at
particular points along the Ag L high-symmetry direction puts forward
the three-dimensional character of the electronic structure of the films

The Vaginal Community State Types Microbiome-Immune Network as Key Factor for Bacterial Vaginosis and Aerobic Vaginitis
Regarding bacterial vaginosis (BV), the relevance of the vaginal microbiota to the women's health fulfills a key role, but knowledge gaps regarding aerobic vaginitis (AV) exist. This study aims to characterize vaginal microbiome and its relationship with the local immune mediators, providing an opportunity to define the link between vaginal commensal microorganisms and opportunistic pathogens in the relation of a given vaginal community state type (CST). A total of 90 vaginal samples from Caucasian asymptomatic women of reproductive age (18-40 years) attending the yearly examination and not reporting any vaginal complaints were retrospectively evaluated for microbiome assessment and immune factor dosage. The samples were tested by the Ion Torrent PGM and the Luminex Bio-Plex technologies for the analysis of microbiome and immune factors, respectively. In our study, the CST classification together with the local immune response profiling represented a good predictive indicator of the vaginal health, suggesting that the predominance of a specific Lactobacillus and its relative abundance are pivotal elements to maintain a physiologic status. A vaginal colonization from Bifidobacterium may absolve a protective role similar to that of Lactobacillus, corresponding to a newly identified CST, although studies are needed to better clarify its clinical significance. Moreover, within each CST, a different pattern of inflammation is activated and orchestrated both by the dominant Lactobacillus spp. and by specific non-Lactobacillus bacteria and can give insights into the pathogenic mechanisms. In conclusion, this study contributes to the characterization of vaginal dysbiosis, reshaping this concept by taking into consideration the CST profiling, local immune marker, and immune-microbial network
Superconductivity in Fullerides
Experimental studies of superconductivity properties of fullerides are
briefly reviewed. Theoretical calculations of the electron-phonon coupling, in
particular for the intramolecular phonons, are discussed extensively. The
calculations are compared with coupling constants deduced from a number of
different experimental techniques. It is discussed why the A_3 C_60 are not
Mott-Hubbard insulators, in spite of the large Coulomb interaction. Estimates
of the Coulomb pseudopotential , describing the effect of the Coulomb
repulsion on the superconductivity, as well as possible electronic mechanisms
for the superconductivity are reviewed. The calculation of various properties
within the Migdal-Eliashberg theory and attempts to go beyond this theory are

Anatomy of the AGN in NGC 5548: II. The spatial, temporal, and physical nature of the outflow from HST/COS Observations
Context. AGN outflows are thought to influence the evolution of their host galaxies and of super massive black holes. Our deep multiwavelength campaign on NGC 5548 has revealed a new, unusually strong X-ray obscuration, accompanied by broad UV absorption troughs observed for the first time in this object. The X-ray obscuration caused a dramatic decrease in the incident ionizing flux on the outflow that produces the long-studied narrow UV absorption lines in this AGN. The resulting data allowed us to construct a comprehensive physical, spatial, and temporal picture for this enduring AGN wind. / Aims. We aim to determine the distance of the narrow UV outflow components from the central source, their total column-density, and the mechanism responsible for their observed absorption variability.
Methods. We study the UV spectra acquired during the campaign, as well as from four previous epochs (1998−2011). Our main analysis tools are ionic column-density extraction techniques, photoionization models based on the code CLOUDY, and collisional excitation simulations. / Results. A simple model based on a fixed total column-density absorber, reacting to changes in ionizing illumination, matches the very different ionization states seen in five spectroscopic epochs spanning 16 years. The main component of the enduring outflow is situated at 3.5 ± 1.1 pc from the central source, and its distance and number density are similar to those of the narrow-emitting-line region in this object. Three other components are situated between 5−70 pc and two are farther than 100 pc. The wealth of observational constraints and the anti-correlation between the observed X-ray and UV flux in the 2002 and 2013 epochs make our physical model a leading contender for interpreting trough variability data of quasar outflows. / Conclusions. This campaign, in combination with prior UV and X-ray data, yields the first simple model that can explain the physical characteristics and the substantial variability observed in an AGN outflow
The ASTRO-H X-ray Observatory
The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly
successful X-ray missions initiated by the Institute of Space and Astronautical
Science (ISAS). ASTRO-H will investigate the physics of the high-energy
universe via a suite of four instruments, covering a very wide energy range,
from 0.3 keV to 600 keV. These instruments include a high-resolution,
high-throughput spectrometer sensitive over 0.3-2 keV with high spectral
resolution of Delta E < 7 eV, enabled by a micro-calorimeter array located in
the focal plane of thin-foil X-ray optics; hard X-ray imaging spectrometers
covering 5-80 keV, located in the focal plane of multilayer-coated, focusing
hard X-ray mirrors; a wide-field imaging spectrometer sensitive over 0.4-12
keV, with an X-ray CCD camera in the focal plane of a soft X-ray telescope; and
a non-focusing Compton-camera type soft gamma-ray detector, sensitive in the
40-600 keV band. The simultaneous broad bandpass, coupled with high spectral
resolution, will enable the pursuit of a wide variety of important science

Anatomical and functional results of ossiculoplasty using titanium prosthesis
Titanium ossicular chain replacement prosthesis is often used for rehabilitation of the columellar effect in otologic surgeries. This retrospective study aims to analyse the anatomical and functional results of surgeries in which a titanium prosthesis was used. Two hundred and eighty procedures in 256 patients operated on in a tertiary referral center were analysed. Aetiologies, preoperative audiograms, peropera-tive data and postoperative outcomes at 2 and 12 months postoperatively were reviewed. Chronic suppurative otitis media with or without cholesteatoma was the main aetiology (89%). There was no difference in anatomical results between partial and total ossicular replacement prosthesis, with an overall dislocation rate of 6%, and an overall extrusion rate of 3%. Regarding functional results, a postoperative air-bone gap ≤ 20 dB was achieved in 65% of cases, with a better result for partial compared to total ossiculoplasty (p = 0.02). A significant difference in air bone gap closure was found when comparing aetiologies, with a higher air-bone gap closure in malformation cases compared to chronic suppurative otitis media with cholesteatoma or retraction cases (p = 0.03). Ossiculoplasty using titanium prosthesis is a safe and effective procedure for rehabilitation of hearing loss, which allows reaching an air-bone gap ≤ 20 dB in the majority of patients
Sporadic high-grade malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the hypoglossal nerve
Malignant tumors of peripheral nerve sheaths (MPNSTs) are rare malignant soft tissue tumors arising either from a peripheral nerve or from a pre-existing benign nerve sheath tumor. They occur most often in the context of Neurofibromatosis type-1 (NF-1) and are characterized by poor prognosis and aggressive behavior with a high rate of recurrence and distant metastases. We describe a 50-year-old woman who presented with right neck swelling, progressive dysphagia and tongue paresis. Imaging analysis revealed a mass involving the right parapharyngeal space. The tumor was excissed through a transcervical approach. At surgery, the tumor was strictly adherent to the hypoglossal nerve. Pathologic evaluation of the mass revealed a high-grade MPNST. Based on the pathological diagnosis, a clinical work-up for NF-1 was performed but it resulted negative. Occurrence of sporadic high-grade MPNST in the parapharyngeal space is rare and development from the hypoglossal nerve exceptional. As far as we know, only in two cases, both with clinical features consistent with NF1, the tumor was reported to be arised from the hypoglossal nerve
