    Modelling groundwater-dependent vegetation patterns using ensemble learning

    International audienceVegetation patterns arise from the interplay between intraspecific and interspecific biotic interactions and from different abiotic constraints and interacting driving forces and distributions. In this study, we constructed an ensemble learning model that, based on spatially distributed environmental variables, could model vegetation patterns at the local scale. The study site was an alluvial floodplain with marked hydrologic gradients on which different vegetation types developed. The model was evaluated on accuracy, and could be concluded to perform well. However, model accuracy was remarkably lower for boundary areas between two distinct vegetation types. Subsequent application of the model on a spatially independent data set showed a poor performance that could be linked with the niche concept to conclude that an empirical distribution model, which has been constructed on local observations, is incapable to be applied beyond these boundaries

    Accounting for seasonality in a soil moisture change detection algorithm for ASAR Wide Swath time series

    A change detection algorithm is applied on a three year time series of ASAR Wide Swath images in VV polarization over Calabria, Italy, in order to derive information on temporal soil moisture dynamics. The algorithm, adapted from an algorithm originally developed for ERS scatterometer, was validated using a simple hydrological model incorporating meteorological and pedological data. Strong positive correlations between modelled soil moisture and ASAR soil moisture were observed over arable land, while the correlation became much weaker over more vegetated areas. In a second phase, an attempt was made to incorporate seasonality in the different model parameters. It was observed that seasonally changing surface properties mainly affected the multitemporal incidence angle normalization. When applying a seasonal angular normalization, correlation coefficients between modelled soil moisture and retrieved soil moisture increased overall. Attempts to account for seasonality in the other model parameters did not result in an improved performance

    Enhanced therapeutic efficacy of 5'deoxy-5-fluorouridine in 5-fluorouracil resistant head and neck tumours in relation to 5-fluorouracil metabolising enzymes.

    Four human head and neck xenograft (HNX) tumour lines grown in nude mice and two murine colon carcinomas (Colon 26 and 38) were tested for their sensitivity to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and its prodrug 5'deoxy-5-fluorouridine (Doxifluridine, 5'd-FUR). 5-FU sensitivity at the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) showed the following pattern; HNX-DU less than HNX-KE = HNX-E = HNX-G less than Colon 26 much less than Colon 38. The sensitivity pattern to 5'd-FUR was: HNX-DU less than HNX-G less than HNX-E less than HNX-KE less than Colon 38 less than Colon 26. For HNX-KE, HNX-E and Colon 26 an increase in therapeutic efficacy was observed with 5'd-FUR as compared to 5-FU; Colon 38 was as sensitive to 5'd-FUR as to 5-FU. Plasma pharmacokinetics of 5'd-FUR and 5-FU were comparable in normal and nude mice. Metabolism of 5-FU and 5'd-FUR was studied in the tumours. Conversion of 5'd-FUR to 5-FU was highest in Colon 26 and 15-20 times lower in HNX-DU, HNX-KE and Colon 38. The Km for 5'd-FUR in all tumours was 1-2 mM. Further anabolism of 5-FU to fluorouridine (FUR) was 5-10 times higher than that of 5-FU to FUR in HNX tumours and 3 times in the colon tumours. 5-FU conversion to FUMP via FUR had the following pattern: Colon 26 much greater than HNX-DU greater than HNX-G greater than HNX-E greater than HNX-KE much greater than Colon 38; of 5-FU to FdUMP via FUdR: Colon 26 greater than HNX-DU = HNX-KE greater than HNX-E greater than HNX-G = Colon 38; and that of 5-FU to FUMP catalysed by orotate phosphoribosyl transferase (OPRT); Colon 26 greater than or equal to Colon 38 greater than HNX-KE greater than HNX-E = HNX-DU = HNX-G. Only those tumours with a relatively high activity of OPRT were sensitive to 5'd-FUR. Colon 26, which has a very high rate of pyrimidine nucleoside phosphorylase, showed a relatively high increase in the therapeutic efficacy. It is concluded that a low rate of pyrimidine nucleoside phosphorylase is enough to convert 5'd-FUR to 5-FU; further anabolism of 5-FU catalysed by OPRT may be limiting and explain the differential sensitivity

    Flickering of 1.3 cm Sources in Sgr B2: Towards a Solution to the Ultracompact HII Region Lifetime Problem

    Accretion flows onto massive stars must transfer mass so quickly that they are themselves gravitationally unstable, forming dense clumps and filaments. These density perturbations interact with young massive stars, emitting ionizing radiation, alternately exposing and confining their HII regions. As a result, the HII regions are predicted to flicker in flux density over periods of decades to centuries rather than increasing monotonically in size as predicted by simple Spitzer solutions. We have recently observed the Sgr B2 region at 1.3 cm with the VLA in its three hybrid configurations (DnC, CnB and BnA) at a resolution of 0.25''. These observations were made to compare in detail with matched continuum observations from 1989. At 0.25'' resolution, Sgr B2 contains 41 UC HII regions, 6 of which are hypercompact. The new observations of Sgr B2 allow comparison of relative peak flux densites for the HII regions in Sgr B2 over a 23 year time baseline (1989-2012) in one of the most source-rich massive star forming regions in the Milky Way. The new 1.3 cm continuum images indicate that four of the 41 UC HII regions exhibit significant changes in their peak flux density, with one source (K3) dropping in peak flux density, and the other 3 sources (F10.303, F1 and F3) increasing in peak flux density. The results are consistent with statistical predictions from simulations of high mass star formation, suggesting that they offer a solution to the lifetime problem for ultracompact HII regions.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letter

    Structure and Decay Correlations of Two-Neutron Systems Beyond the Dripline

    The two-neutron unbound systems of 16Be, 13Li, 10He, and 26O have been measured using the Modular Neutron Array (MoNA) and 4 Tm Sweeper magnet setup. The correlations of the 3-body decay for the 16Be and 13Li were extracted and demonstrated a strong correlated enhancement between the two neutrons. The measurement of the 10He ground state resonance from a 14Be(−2p2n) reaction provided insight into previous predictions that wavefunction of the entrance channel, projectile, can influence the observed decay energy spectrum for the unbound system. Lastly, the decay-in-target (DiT) technique was utilized to extract the lifetime of the 26O ground state. The measured lifetime of 4.5+1.1 −1.5 (stat.)±3(sys.) ps provides the first indication of two-neutron radioactivity

    Symmetry breaking in crossed magnetic and electric fields

    We present the first observations of cylindrical symmetry breaking in highly excited diamagnetic hydrogen with a small crossed electric field, and we give a semiclassical interpretation of this effect. As the small perpendicular electric field is added, the recurrence strengths of closed orbits decrease smoothly to a minimum, and revive again.
