The presence of phytoseiid mites was determined in two unsprayed apple orchards at Cinco Saltos and Cipolletti, Río Negro Province, Argentina. Twenty apple trees were chosen in each orchard and a sample of 10 leaves per tree was taken at seven different sampling dates. Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor), Euseius fructicolus (Gonzalez &Schuster) and Paraseiulus talbii Athias-Henriot were found at Cinco Saltos, and Proprioseiopsis messor (Wainstein), N. californicus and Metaseiulus camelliae (Chant & Yoshida-Shaul) at Cipolletti. Of these species, only N. californicus has previously been reported from the Alto Valle del Río Negro region. Proprioseiopsis messor and Paraseiulus talbii are reported for the first time in South America and on the American Continent respectively.

Optical And Esr Study Of Er3+ In Linbo3

We report laser-excited optical transitions between the 4S3/2 and 4I15/2 multiplets of Er3+ as an impurity in the LiNbO3 host, together with the optical-absorption spectra at liquid-helium and liquid-nitrogen temperatures. The optical data allow us to determine the crystal-field splittings of those levels and the spin-Hamiltonian parameters for the 4I15/2 lower multiplet. The observed electron-spin resonance and the angular variation of this spectrum agree with the parameters obtained by optical techniques. Both techniques show that only one of the three possible trigonal sites in LiNbO3 is occupied by Er3+ within the experimental sensitivity, in agreement with recent x-ray standing-wave measurements. © 1995 The American Physical Society.5153206320

Doppler ultrasonography of the pectinis oculi artery in harpy eagles (Harpia harpyja)

    Get PDF
Twenty harpy eagles (Harpia harpyja) without systemic or ocular diseases were examined to measure blood velocity parameters of the pectinis oculi artery using Doppler ultrasonography. Pectinate artery resistive index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) were investigated using ocular Doppler ultrasonography. The mean RI and PI values across all eyes were 0.44±0.10 and 0.62±0.20 respectively. Low RI and PI values found in the harpy eagle´s pectinis oculi artery compared with the American pekin ducks one and other tissue suggest indeed a high metabolic activity in pecten oculi and corroborates the hypothesis of a nutritional function and/or intraocular pressure regulation. Keywords: Avian posterior segment, Pulsatility index, Raptors, Resistive index

Ligand-Free Palladium-Catalyzed Oxyarylation of Dihydronaphthalenes and Chromenequinone with o-Iodophenols and 3-Iodolawsone in PEG-400: An Efficient Synthesis of 5-Carbapterocarpans and Pterocarpanquinones

Dihydronaphthalenes were oxyarylated with o-iodophenols, in PEG-400 at 140 or 170 °C, leading regio- and stereoselectively to 5-carbapterocarpans. By using Pd(OAc)2 (5–10 mol%) as precatalyst and Ag2CO3 (1.1 equiv) as base (conditions A), products were obtained in good to excellent chemical yields, in 5–30 minutes, irrespective of the pattern of substitution the starting materials. Alternatively, when p-hydroxyacetophenone oxime derived palladacycle (1 mol%) was used as precatalyst, and dicyclohexylamine (2 equiv) was used as base (silver-free, conditions B), the corresponding adducts were obtained in moderate to good yields, in 0.5 to 4 hours. Finally, the oxyarylation of dihydronaphthalenes and chromenquinone with o-iodophenols and 3-iodolawsone in PEG-400 under conditions A led regio- and stereoselectively to the formation of carbapterocarpanquinones and pterocarpanquinones in moderate yield.Financial support from Brazilian agencies CAPES-DGU (Project 200/09), CNPq, FAPERJ and UFRJ are acknowledged. Height-based equations as screening tools for elevated blood pressure in the SAYCARE study

This study evaluated the accuracy of four height-based equations: blood pressure to height ratio (BPHR), modified BPHR (MBPHR), new modified BPHR (NMBPHR), and height-based equations (HBE) for screening elevated BP in children and adolescents in the SAYCARE study. We measured height and BP of 829 children and adolescents from seven South American cities. Receiving operating curves were used to assess formula performance to diagnose elevated BP in comparison to the 2017 clinical guideline. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values (PPV, NPV) were calculated for the four screening formulas. The diagnostic agreement was evaluated with the kappa coefficient. The HBE equation showed the maximum sensitivity (100%) in children, both for boys and girls, and showed the best performance results, with a very high NPV (>99%) and high PPV (>60%) except for female children (53.8%). In adolescents, the highest sensitivity (100%) was achieved with the NMBPHR for both sexes. Kappa coefficients indicated that HBE had the highest agreement with the gold standard diagnostic method (between 0.70 and 0.75), except for female children (0.57). Simplified methods are friendlier than the percentile gold standard tables. The HBE equation showed better performance than the other formulas in this Latin American pediatric population
