An exact master equation for the system-reservoir dynamics under the strong coupling regime and non-Markovian dynamics

In this paper we present a method to derive an exact master equation for a bosonic system coupled to a set of other bosonic systems, which plays the role of the reservoir, under the strong coupling regime, i.e., without resorting to either the rotating-wave or secular approximations. Working with phase-space distribution functions, we verify that the dynamics are separated in the evolution of its center, which follows classical mechanics, and its shape, which becomes distorted. This is the generalization of a result by Glauber, who stated that coherent states remain coherent under certain circumstances, specifically when the rotating-wave approximation and a zero-temperature reservoir are used. We show that the counter-rotating terms generate fluctuations that distort the vacuum state, much the same as thermal fluctuations.Finally, we discuss conditions for non-Markovian dynamics

Comment on "Spin-1 aggregation model in one dimension"

M. Girardi and W. Figueiredo have proposed a simple model of aggregation in one dimension to mimic the self-assembly of amphiphiles in aqueous solution [Phys. Rev. E 62, 8344 (2000)]. We point out that interesting results can be obtained if a different set of interactions is considered, instead of their choice (the s=1 Ising model).Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

Atividades lúdicas como elementos mediadores da aprendizagem no ensino de ciências da natureza

Este relato focaliza os resultados obtidos na aplicação de um jogo de tabuleiro, o Autódromo Alquímico. O estuo foi realizado com alunos do 9o ano do Ensino Fundamental em escolas da Rede Privada do Município de Itabuna (Ba, Brasil), com o objetivo de verificar o papel dessas dinâmicas como recurso mediador/facilitador da construção do conhecimento pelos sujeitos envolvidos no processo. Observamos que cerca de 90% dos sujeitos do processo aprenderam os conteúdos abordados. Além disso, foram desenvolvidas habilidades importantes para a constituição de um sujeito capaz do exercício ativo de sua cidadania, tais como respeito a identidades e diferenças; inter-relação de pensamentos, idéias e conceitos; aumento da criatividade e da capacidade de argumentação

A first appraisal of the landing and mechanism of the Santos fishery

This paper summarizes and analyses the landing data collected at Santos, Brazil, during the 12 months period, July 1958-June 1959. These data are given in terms of weight landed of the more important fish and shrimp and also in terms of value. The distribution of the landings of each of the more important species is shown both according to the type of fishing gear used and fishing area. The fishing area is given in the form of statistical rectangles of 60 miles square. The landings are broken down to obtain a figure for the landing per hour of fishing for each species, for each gear and for each rectangle fished. This figure of landing per unit fishing time is used to compare one area with another, one gear with another, and one month with another for each of the important species. In this way, comparisons of the available density of a species by time, area and fishing gear are made.Êste trabalho sintetiza e analisa os dados coletados em Santos, Brasil, sobre o desembarque de pescado durante o período de 12 meses, de julho de 1958 a junho de 1959. Estes dados são apresentados em termos de peso desembarcado, para as espécies de peixes mais importantes e camarões e, também, em termos de valor econômico. A distribuição dos desembarques de cada uma das espécies mais importantes é apresentada tanto em relação ao tipo de aparelho de pesca usado, como em relação à área de pesca. Essa área é dada sob forma de retângulos estatísticos de 60 milhas quadradas. Os desembarques são classificados para se obter o valor do desembarque por hora de pesca para cada espécie, para cada aparelho e para cada retângulo pescado. Este valor do desembarque por unidade de tempo de captura é usado para comparar as áreas entre si, os aparelhos de captura entre si e os meses do ano entre si, em relação a cada espécie importante.
