-free families in the Boolean lattice
For a family of subsets of [n]=\{1, 2, ..., n} ordered by
inclusion, and a partially ordered set P, we say that is P-free
if it does not contain a subposet isomorphic to P. Let be the
largest size of a P-free family of subsets of [n]. Let be the poset with
distinct elements a, b, c, d, a<b, c<d; i.e., the 2-dimensional Boolean
lattice. We show that where . We also prove that the largest -free
family of subsets of [n] having at most three different sizes has at most
2.20711N members.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figure
A novel background reduction strategy for high level triggers and processing in gamma-ray Cherenkov detectors
Gamma ray astronomy is now at the leading edge for studies related both to
fundamental physics and astrophysics. The sensitivity of gamma detectors is
limited by the huge amount of background, constituted by hadronic cosmic rays
(typically two to three orders of magnitude more than the signal) and by the
accidental background in the detectors. By using the information on the
temporal evolution of the Cherenkov light, the background can be reduced. We
will present here the results obtained within the MAGIC experiment using a new
technique for the reduction of the background. Particle showers produced by
gamma rays show a different temporal distribution with respect to showers
produced by hadrons; the background due to accidental counts shows no
dependence on time. Such novel strategy can increase the sensitivity of present
instruments.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Proc. of the 9th Int. Syposium "Frontiers of

A proposal of a new evaluation framework towards implementation of genetic tests
Background The existing frameworks for the evaluation of genetic and genomic applications clearly address the technical and clinical value of a test, but are less concerned with the way genetic services are delivered and organized. We therefore aimed to develop a comprehensive new framework that includes an assessment of service delivery. Methods A new framework was built on the evaluation dimensions identified through a systematic review of the existing frameworks and a Delphi survey of Italian experts in public health genomics. Results Our framework has four sections. The first two sections, respectively, guide the evidence collection process for the genetic test (analytic validity; clinical validity; clinical utility; personal utility) and its delivery models (organizational aspects; economic evaluation; ethical, legal and social implications; patient perspective). The third section guides the formulation of the research priorities to be addressed in future research. Finally, the fourth section suggests three criteria to summarize the collected evidence (net benefit, cost-effectiveness, feasibility). Conclusion We have successfully developed an evaluation framework for the evaluation of genetic tests that includes an assessment of service delivery. It also introduces some neglected evaluation dimensions such as personal utility and patient perspective
Com o objetivo de avaliar a precisão e concordância na determinação de hemoglobina (Hb) em sangue capilar e venoso, utilizando-se o HemoCue® e um contador automático, foram estudadas 29 gestantes. O HemoCue® apresentou baixa repetibilidade para as medidas em duplicata em sangue capilar (CR=0,53 g/dL; CV=13,6%) e venoso (CR=0,53 g/dL; CV=13,6%). As medidas de Hb obtidas em sangue capilar foram mais altas do que as obtidas em sangue venoso (12,4 e 11,7 g/dL, respectivamente; pTo determine the precision and agreement of the hemoglobin (Hb) measurements in capillary and venous blood samples by the HemoCue® and an automated counter. Hb was determined by both equipaments in blood samples of 29 pregnant women. The HemoCue® showed low repeatability of Hb measurements in duplicate in capillary (CR=0.53 g/dL, CV=13.6%) and venous blood (CR=0.53 g/dL, CV=13.6%). Hb measurements in capillary blood were higher than those in venous blood (12.4 and 11.7 g/dL, respectively;
Testing numerical relativity with the shifted gauge wave
Computational methods are essential to provide waveforms from coalescing
black holes, which are expected to produce strong signals for the gravitational
wave observatories being developed. Although partial simulations of the
coalescence have been reported, scientifically useful waveforms have so far not
been delivered. The goal of the AppleswithApples (AwA) Alliance is to design,
coordinate and document standardized code tests for comparing numerical
relativity codes. The first round of AwA tests have now being completed and the
results are being analyzed. These initial tests are based upon periodic
boundary conditions designed to isolate performance of the main evolution code.
Here we describe and carry out an additional test with periodic boundary
conditions which deals with an essential feature of the black hole excision
problem, namely a non-vanishing shift. The test is a shifted version of the
existing AwA gauge wave test. We show how a shift introduces an exponentially
growing instability which violates the constraints of a standard harmonic
formulation of Einstein's equations. We analyze the Cauchy problem in a
harmonic gauge and discuss particular options for suppressing instabilities in
the gauge wave tests. We implement these techniques in a finite difference
evolution algorithm and present test results. Although our application here is
limited to a model problem, the techniques should benefit the simulation of
black holes using harmonic evolution codes.Comment: Submitted to special numerical relativity issue of Classical and
