Relativistic Hamiltonians in many-body theories
We discuss the description of a many-body nuclear system using Hamiltonians
that contain the nucleon relativistic kinetic energy and potentials with
relativistic corrections. Through the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, the
field theoretical problem of interacting nucleons and mesons is mapped to an
equivalent one in terms of relativistic potentials, which are then expanded at
some order in 1/m_N. The formalism is applied to the Hartree problem in nuclear
matter, showing how the results of the relativistic mean field theory can be
recovered over a wide range of densities.Comment: 14 pages, uses REVTeX and epsfig, 3 postscript figures; a postscript

Toroidal quadrupole transitions associated to collective rotational-vibrational motions of the nucleus
In the frame of the algebraic Riemann Rotational Model one computes the
longitudinal, transverse and toroidal multipoles corresponding to the
excitations of low-lying levels in the ground state band of several even-even
nuclei by inelastic electron scattering (e,e'). Related to these transitions a
new quantity, which accounts for the deviations from the Siegert theorem, is
introduced. The intimate connection between the nuclear vorticity and the
dynamic toroidal quadrupole moment is underlined. Inelastic differential
cross-sections calculated at backscattering angles shows the dominancy of
toroidal form-factors over a broad range of momentum transfer.Comment: 11 pages in LaTex, 3 figures available by fax or mail, accepted for

Nuclear structure studies with the 7Li(e,e'p) reaction
Experimental momentum distributions for the transitions to the ground state
and first excited state of 6He have been measured via the reaction
7Li(e,e'p)6He, in the missing momentum range from -70 to 260 MeV/c. They are
compared to theoretical distributions calculated with mean-field wave functions
and with variational Monte Carlo (VMC) wave functions which include strong
state-dependent correlations in both 7Li and 6He. These VMC calculations
provide a parameter-free prediction of the momentum distribution that
reproduces the measured data, including its normalization. The deduced summed
spectroscopic factor for the two transitions is 0.58 +/- 0.05, in perfect
agreement with the VMC value of 0.60. This is the first successful comparison
of experiment and ab initio theory for spectroscopic factors in p-shell nuclei.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Nuclear spins, magnetic moments and quadrupole moments of Cu isotopes from N = 28 to N = 46: probes for core polarization effects
Measurements of the ground-state nuclear spins, magnetic and quadrupole
moments of the copper isotopes from 61Cu up to 75Cu are reported. The
experiments were performed at the ISOLDE facility, using the technique of
collinear laser spectroscopy. The trend in the magnetic moments between the
N=28 and N=50 shell closures is reasonably reproduced by large-scale
shell-model calculations starting from a 56Ni core. The quadrupole moments
reveal a strong polarization of the underlying Ni core when the neutron shell
is opened, which is however strongly reduced at N=40 due to the parity change
between the and orbits. No enhanced core polarization is seen beyond
N=40. Deviations between measured and calculated moments are attributed to the
softness of the 56Ni core and weakening of the Z=28 and N=28 shell gaps.Comment: 13 pagers, 19 figures, accepted by Physical Review
Hadronic Parity Violation and Inelastic Electron-Deuteron Scattering
We compute contributions to the parity-violating (PV) inelastic
electron-deuteron scattering asymmetry arising from hadronic PV. While hadronic
PV effects can be relatively important in PV threshold electro- disintegration,
we find that they are highly suppressed at quasielastic kinematics. The
interpretation of the PV quasielastic asymmetry is, thus, largely unaffected by
hadronic PV.Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, uses REVTeX and BibTe
Color Transparency Effects in Electron Deuteron Interactions at Intermediate Q^2
High momentum transfer electrodisintegration of polarized and unpolarized
deuterium targets, is studied. We show that the importance of final
state interactions-FSI, occuring when a knocked out nucleon interacts with the
other nucleon, depends strongly on the momentum of the spectator nucleon. In
particular, these FSI occur when the essential contributions to the scattering
amplitude arise from internucleon distances . But the absorption
of the high momentum may produce a point like configuration, which
evolves with time. In this case, the final state interactions probe the point
like configuration at the early stage of its evolution. The result is that
significant color transparency effects, which can either enhance or suppress
computed cross sections, are predicted to occur for .Comment: 37 pages LaTex, 12 uuencoded PostScript Figures as separate file, to

Tensor Analyzing Powers for Quasi-Elastic Electron Scattering from Deuterium
We report on a first measurement of tensor analyzing powers in quasi-elastic
electron-deuteron scattering at an average three-momentum transfer of 1.7
fm. Data sensitive to the spin-dependent nucleon density in the deuteron
were obtained for missing momenta up to 150 MeV/ with a tensor polarized
H target internal to an electron storage ring. The data are well described
by a calculation that includes the effects of final-state interaction,
meson-exchange and isobar currents, and leading-order relativistic
contributions.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
On the effects of the final state interaction in the electro-disintegration of the deuteron at intermediate and high energies
The role of the final state interactions (FSI) in the inclusive quasi-elastic
disintegration of the deuteron is investigated treating the two-nucleon final
state within the exact continuum solutions of the non-relativistic Schroedinger
equation, as well as within the Glauber multiple scattering approach. It is
shown that for values of the Bjorken scaling variable both
approaches provide similar results, unless the case , where
they appreciably disagree. It is demonstrated that present experimental data,
which are mostly limited to a region of four-momentum transfer () where the Center-of-Mass energy of the final state is below the
pion threshold production, can be satisfactorily reproduced by the approach
based on the exact solution of the Schroedinger equation and not by the Glauber
approach. It is also pointed out that the latter, unlike the former, does not
satisfy the inelastic Coulomb sum rule, the violation being of the order of
about 20%.Comment: 16 LaTeX pages, 10 eps-figures, 1 tabl
Path Integrals for Potential Scattering
Two path integral representations for the -matrix in nonrelativistic
potential scattering are derived and proved to produce the complete Born series
when expanded to all orders. They are obtained with the help of "phantom"
degrees of freedom which take away explicit phases that diverge for asymptotic
times. In addition, energy conservation is enforced by imposing a
Faddeev-Popov-like constraint in the velocity path integral. These expressions
may be useful for attempts to evaluate the path integral in real time and for
alternative multiple scattering expansions. Standard and novel eikonal-type
high-energy approximations and systematic expansions immediately follow.Comment: 31 pages, 3 figures, Latex;v2: typo in eq. (4.6) corrected,

The He(e, ed)p Reaction in q-constant Kinematics
The cross section for the He(e, ed)p reaction has been measured as a
function of the missing momentum in q -constant kinematics at
beam energies of 370 and 576 MeV for values of the three-momentum transfer
of 412, 504 and 604 \mevc. The L(+TT), T and LT structure functions have been
separated for = 412 and 504 \mevc. The data are compared to three-body
Faddeev calculations, including meson-exchange currents (MEC), and to
calculations based on a covariant diagrammatic expansion. The influence of
final-state interactions and meson-exchange currents is discussed. The
-dependence of the data is reasonably well described by all calculations.
However, the most advanced Faddeev calculations, which employ the AV18
nucleon-nucleon interaction and include MEC, overestimate the measured cross
sections, especially the longitudinal part, and at the larger values of .
The diagrammatic approach gives a fair description of the cross section, but
under(over)estimates the longitudinal (transverse) structure function.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure
