    Discrete choice modelling incorporating attribute thresholds of perception

    In this paper we formulate a discrete choice model that incorporates thresholds in the perception of attribute changes. The model considers multiple options and allows changes in several attributes. We postulate that if thresholds exist they could be random, differ between individuals, and even be a function of socio-economic characteristics and choice conditions. Our formulation allows estimation of the parameters of the threshold probability distribution starting from information about choices. The model is applied to synthetic data and also to real data from a stated preference survey. We found that where perception thresholds exist in the population, the use of models without them leads to errors in estimation and prediction. Clearly, the effect is more relevant when the typical size of change in the attribute value is comparable with the threshold, and when the contribution of this attribute in the utility function is substantial. Finally, we discuss the implications of the threshold model for estimation of the benefits of transport investments, and show that where thresholds exist, models that do not represent them can overestimate benefits substantially

    Intraband Optical Absorption In Superlattices In An In-plane Magnetic Field

    The absorption coefficient of GaAs-AlxGa1-xAs superlattices in an in-plane magnetic field is studied in the case of intraband transitions between electronic magnetic levels. A detailed analysis of the absorption peaks and their dependence on the magnetic-field intensity, superlattice period, and temperature, is performed. By taking into account the detailed properties of the magnetic subbands, the joint density of states, the transition matrix elements, and the effective sheet concentration of electrons involved in the optical transitions, a simple theoretical explanation is given for some experimental results previously reported. © 1993 The American Physical Society.4874516452

    On the continuum limit of epidemiological models on graphs: convergence and approximation results

    We focus on an epidemiological model (the archetypical SIR system) defined on graphs and study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions as the number of vertices in the graph diverges. By relying on the theory of so called graphons we provide a characterization of the limit and establish convergence results.     Upside-down fluxes Down Under: CO2 net sink in winter and net source in summer in a temperate evergreen broadleaf forest

    Predicting the seasonal dynamics of ecosystem carbon fluxes is challenging in broadleaved evergreen forests because of their moderate climates and subtle changes in canopy phenology. We assessed the climatic and biotic drivers of the seasonality of net ecosystem–atmosphere CO2 exchange (NEE) of a eucalyptus-dominated forest near Sydney, Australia, using the eddy covariance method. The climate is characterised by a mean annual precipitation of 800mm and a mean annual temperature of 18°C, hot summers and mild winters, with highly variable precipitation. In the 4-year study, the ecosystem was a sink each year (−225gCm−2yr−1 on average, with a standard deviation of 108gCm−2yr−1); inter-annual variations were not related to meteorological conditions. Daily net C uptake was always detected during the cooler, drier winter months (June through August), while net C loss occurred during the warmer, wetter summer months (December through February). Gross primary productivity (GPP) seasonality was low, despite longer days with higher light intensity in summer, because vapour pressure deficit (D) and air temperature (Ta) restricted surface conductance during summer while winter temperatures were still high enough to support photosynthesis. Maximum GPP during ideal environmental conditions was significantly correlated with remotely sensed enhanced vegetation index (EVI; r2 = 0.46) and with canopy leaf area index (LAI; r2= 0.29), which increased rapidly after mid-summer rainfall events. Ecosystem respiration (ER) was highest during summer in wet soils and lowest during winter months. ER had larger seasonal amplitude compared to GPP, and therefore drove the seasonal variation of NEE. Because summer carbon uptake may become increasingly limited by atmospheric demand and high temperature, and because ecosystem respiration could be enhanced by rising temperatures, our results suggest the potential for large-scale seasonal shifts in NEE in sclerophyll vegetation under climate change.The Australian Education Investment Fund, Australian Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network, Australian Research Council and Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment at Western Sydney University supported this work.     dReDBox: Materializing a full-stack rack-scale system prototype of a next-generation disaggregated datacenter

    Current datacenters are based on server machines, whose mainboard and hardware components form the baseline, monolithic building block that the rest of the system software, middleware and application stack are built upon. This leads to the following limitations: (a) resource proportionality of a multi-tray system is bounded by the basic building block (mainboard), (b) resource allocation to processes or virtual machines (VMs) is bounded by the available resources within the boundary of the mainboard, leading to spare resource fragmentation and inefficiencies, and (c) upgrades must be applied to each and every server even when only a specific component needs to be upgraded. The dRedBox project (Disaggregated Recursive Datacentre-in-a-Box) addresses the above limitations, and proposes the next generation, low-power, across form-factor datacenters, departing from the paradigm of the mainboard-as-a-unit and enabling the creation of function-block-as-a-unit. Hardware-level disaggregation and software-defined wiring of resources is supported by a full-fledged Type-1 hypervisor that can execute commodity virtual machines, which communicate over a low-latency and high-throughput software-defined optical network.     Implicaciones identitarias en la divulgación del patrimonio cultural a través de Internet: un estudio desde la Teoría del Framing

    Esta investigación, centrada en el patrimonio de los municipios, procura señalar aquellos elementos culturales que, de manera latente, son reflejo de la identidad colectiva de las localidades a través de la red. Por tanto, se plantea que un sitio web municipal es un dispositivo identitario, construido sobre la base de objetos patrimoniales y sucesos históricos, que categorizan a un grupo social y, al mismo tiempo, lo diferencian de los demás colectivos. El objetivo de este trabajo radica, entonces, en identificar los componentes del patrimonio que acaparan mayor cobertura informativa en los portales de los municipios de España, para luego señalar el enfoque que predomina en cuanto a su caracterización; un encuadre basado en la dialéctica entre lo local y lo global. Para ello, se implementó un análisis de contenido sobre una muestra de 500 sedes web de todo el país. A la vista de los resultados, se puede postular que la identidad patrimonial de España está marcada por un cariz religioso, ya que las manifestaciones que mayor presencia suelen tener son las construcciones eclesiásticas (en el plano de lo tangible), así como los eventos litúrgicos (a nivel intangible).This research study focuses on the heritage of municipalities in an attempt to point out the cultural elements that are, in a latent way, a reflection of a town’s collective identity on the Internet. It is thus posited that a municipal website is a mechanism related to identity, constructed on the foundation of heritage objects and historical events that categorize a social group and, at the same time, differentiate it from other groups. The aim of this study was therefore to locate the heritage components that receive the greatest coverage on Spanish municipal websites, to then point out the approach that predominates in their characterization, a frame based on the dialectics between the local and the global. With this goal in mind, we performed a content analysis of a sample of 500 websites throughout Spain. In light of the results, it can be postulated that heritage identity in Spain has a religious tenor, as the manifestations most presented are usually ecclesiastical constructions (on the tangible plane) and liturgical events (on an intangible level)

    Food and beverage intakes according to physical activity levels in European children: The IDEFICS (Identification and prevention of Dietary and lifestyle induced health EFfects in Children and infantS) study

    Objective Physical activity (PA) levels and dietary habits are considered some of the most important factors associated with obesity. The present study aimed to examine the association between PA level and food and beverage consumption in European children (2-10 years old).Design/Setting/Subjects A sample of 7229 children (49·0 % girls) from eight European countries participating in the IDEFICS (Identification and prevention of Dietary and lifestyle induced health EFfects In Children and infantS) study was included. Moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) was assessed objectively with accelerometers. FFQ was used to register dietary habits. ANCOVA and binary logistic regression were applied.Results Boys who spent less time in MVPA reported lower consumption of vegetables, fruits, cereals, yoghurt, milk, bread, pasta, candies and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) than boys who spent more time in MVPA (P<0·05). Moreover, boys who spent less time in MVPA were more likely to consume fast foods and water than those in the highest MVPA tertile (P<0·05). Girls who spent less time in MVPA reported lower consumption frequencies of vegetables, pasta, bread, yoghurt, candies, jam/honey and SSB than girls in the highest MVPA tertile (P<0·05). Also, girls in the lowest MVPA tertile were more likely to consume fast foods and water than those with high levels of MVPA (P<0·05).Conclusions Food intake among European children varied with different levels of daily MVPA. Low time spent in MVPA was associated with lowest consumption of both high- and low-energy-dense foods and high fast-food consumption

    Neural correlates of multi-day learning and savings in sensorimotor adaptation

    Abstract In the present study we evaluated changes in neural activation that occur over the time course of multiple days of sensorimotor adaptation, and identified individual neural predictors of adaptation and savings magnitude. We collected functional MRI data while participants performed a manual adaptation task during four separate test sessions over a three-month period. This allowed us to examine changes in activation and associations with adaptation and savings at subsequent sessions. Participants exhibited reliable savings of adaptation across the four sessions. Brain activity associated with early adaptation increased across the sessions in a variety of frontal, parietal, cingulate, and temporal cortical areas, as well as various subcortical areas. We found that savings was positively associated with activation in several striatal, parietal, and cingulate cortical areas including the putamen, precuneus, angular gyrus, dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC), and cingulate motor area. These findings suggest that participants may learn how to better engage cognitive processes across days, potentially reflecting improvements in action selection. We propose that such improvements may rely on action-value assignments, which previously have been linked to the dACC and striatum. As correct movements are assigned a higher value than incorrect movements, the former are more likely to be performed again
