alpha-nucleus potentials for the neutron-deficient p nuclei
alpha-nucleus potentials are one important ingredient for the understanding
of the nucleosynthesis of heavy neutron-deficient p nuclei in the astrophysical
gamma-process where these p nuclei are produced by a series of (gamma,n),
(gamma,p), and (gamma,alpha) reactions. I present an improved alpha-nucleus
potential at the astrophysically relevant sub-Coulomb energies which is derived
from the analysis of alpha decay data and from a previously established

Simulation‐based optimization and experimental comparison of intracranial T2‐weighted DANTE‐SPACE vessel wall imaging at 3T and 7T
Purpose: T2‐weighted DANTE‐SPACE (Delay Alternating with Nutation for Tailored Excitation — Sampling Perfection with Application optimized Contrasts using different flip angle Evolution) sequences facilitate non‐invasive intracranial vessel wall imaging at 7T through simultaneous suppression of blood and CSF. However, the achieved vessel wall delineation depends closely on the selected sequence parameters, and little information is available about the performance of the sequence using more widely available 3T MRI. Therefore, in this paper a comprehensive DANTE‐SPACE simulation framework is used for the optimization and quantitative comparison of T2‐weighted DANTE‐SPACE at both 7T and 3T. Methods: Simulations are used to propose optimized sequence parameters at both 3T and 7T. At 7T, an additional protocol which uses a parallel transmission (pTx) shim during the DANTE preparation for improved suppression of inflowing blood is also proposed. Data at both field strengths using optimized and literature protocols are acquired and quantitatively compared in six healthy volunteers. Results: At 7T, more vessel wall signal can be retained while still achieving sufficient CSF suppression by using fewer DANTE pulses than described in previous implementations. The use of a pTx shim during DANTE at 7T provides a modest further improvement to the inner vessel wall delineation. At 3T, aggressive DANTE preparation is required to achieve CSF suppression, resulting in reduced vessel wall signal. As a result, the achievable vessel wall definition at 3T is around half that of 7T. Conclusion: Simulation‐based optimization of DANTE parameters facilitates improved T2‐weighted DANTE‐SPACE contrasts at 7T. The improved vessel definition of T2‐weighted DANTE‐SPACE at 7T makes DANTE preparation more suitable for T2‐weighted VWI at 7T than at 3T
Optimization of Undersampling Parameters for 3D Intracranial Compressed Sensing MR Angiography at 7 Tesla
Purpose: 3D Time-of-flight (TOF) MR Angiography (MRA) can accurately
visualize the intracranial vasculature, but is limited by long acquisition
times. Compressed sensing (CS) reconstruction can be used to substantially
accelerate acquisitions. The quality of those reconstructions depends on the
undersampling patterns used in the acquisitions. In this work, optimized sets
of undersampling parameters using various acceleration factors for Cartesian 3D
TOF-MRA are established.
Methods: Fully-sampled datasets acquired at 7T were retrospectively
undersampled using variable-density Poisson-disk sampling with various
autocalibration region sizes, polynomial orders, and acceleration factors. The
accuracy of reconstructions from the different undersampled datasets was
assessed using the vessel-masked structural similarity index. Results were
compared for four imaging volumes, acquired from two different subjects.
Optimized undersampling parameters were validated using additional
prospectively undersampled datasets.
Results: For all acceleration factors, using a fully-sampled calibration area
of 12x12 k-space lines and a polynomial order of around 2-2.4 resulted in the
highest image quality. The importance of sampling parameter optimization was
found to increase for higher acceleration factors. The results were consistent
across resolutions and regions of interest with vessels of varying sizes and
tortuosity. In prospectively undersampled acquisitions, using optimized
undersampling parameters resulted in a 7.2% increase in the number of visible
small vessels at R = 7.2.
Conclusion: The image quality of CS TOF-MRA can be improved by appropriate
choice of undersampling parameters. The optimized sets of parameters are

Fecal shedding and tissue infections demonstrate transmission of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis in group-housed dairy calves
International audienceAbstractCurrent Johne’s disease control programs primarily focus on decreasing transmission of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) from infectious adult cows to susceptible calves. However, potential transmission between calves is largely overlooked. The objective was to determine the extent of MAP infection in calves contact-exposed to infectious penmates. Thirty-two newborn Holstein–Friesian calves were grouped into 7 experimental groups of 4, consisting of 2 inoculated (IN) calves, and 2 contact-exposed (CE) calves, and 1 control pen with 4 non-exposed calves. Calves were group housed for 3 months, with fecal samples were collected 3 times per week, blood and environmental samples weekly, and tissue samples at the end of the trial. The IN calves exited the trial after 3 months of group housing, whereas CE calves were individually housed for an additional 3 months before euthanasia. Control calves were group-housed for the entire trial. All CE and IN calves had MAP-positive fecal samples during the period of group housing; however, fecal shedding had ceased at time of individual housing. All IN calves had MAP-positive tissue samples at necropsy, and 7 (50%) of the CE had positive tissue samples. None of the calves had a humoral immune response, whereas INF-γ responses were detected in all IN calves and 5 (36%) CE calves. In conclusion, new MAP infections occurred due to exposure of infectious penmates to contact calves. Therefore, calf-to-calf transmission is a potential route of uncontrolled transmission on cattle farms
Faddeev approach to the octet and decuplet baryons
A relativistic Faddeev model for the baryon octet is extended to treat the
baryon decuplet. We find that after determining the model parameters in the
mesonic sector the masses of both nucleon and delta deviate by less than 5\%
from the experimental data and show only a very weak dependence on the

Quantifying transmission of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis among group-housed dairy calves
International audienceAbstractJohne’s disease (JD) is a chronic enteritis caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), with control primarily aimed at preventing new infections among calves. The aim of the current study was to quantify calf-to-calf transmission of MAP among penmates in an experimental trial. Newborn Holstein bull calves (n = 32) were allocated into pens of 4, with 2 inoculated (IN) calves and 2 calves that were contact exposed (CE). Calves were group-housed for 3 months, with frequent collection of fecal and blood samples and tissue collection after euthanasia. The basic reproduction ratio (R0) was estimated using a final size (FS) model with a susceptible-infected model, based on INF-γ ELISA and tissue culture followed by qPCR. In addition, the transmission rate parameter (β) for new shedding events was estimated using a general linearized method (GLM) model with a susceptible-infected-susceptible model based on culture, followed by qPCR, of fecal samples collected during group housing. The R0 was derived for IN and CE calves separately, due to a difference in susceptibility, as well as differences in duration of shedding events. Based on the FS model, interferon-γ results from blood samples resulted in a R0IG of 0.90 (0.24, 2.59) and tissue culture resulted in a R0T of 1.36 (0.45, 3.94). Based on the GLM model, the R0 for CE calves to begin shedding (R0CE) was 3.24 (1.14, 7.41). We concluded that transmission of MAP infection between penmates occurred and that transmission among calves may be an important cause of persistent MAP infection on dairy farms that is currently uncontrolled for in current JD control programs
Accelerated 3D multi‐channel B 1 + mapping at 7 T for the brain and heart
Purpose: To acquire accurate volumetric multi‐channel B 1 + maps in under 14 s whole‐brain or 23 heartbeats whole‐heart for parallel transmit (pTx) applications at 7 T. Theory and Methods: We evaluate the combination of three recently proposed techniques. The acquisition of multi‐channel transmit array B 1 + maps is accelerated using transmit low rank (TxLR) with absolute B 1 + mapping (Sandwich) acquired in a B 1 + time‐interleaved acquisition of modes (B1TIAMO) fashion. Simulations using synthetic body images derived from Sim4Life were used to test the achievable acceleration for small scan matrices of 24 × 24. Next, we evaluated the method by retrospectively undersampling a fully sampled B 1 + library of nine subjects in the brain. Finally, Cartesian undersampled phantom and in vivo images were acquired in both the brain of three subjects (8Tx/32 receive [Rx]) and the heart of another three subjects (8Tx/8Rx) at 7 T. Results: Simulation and in vivo results show that volumetric multi‐channel B 1 + maps can be acquired using acceleration factors of 4 in the body, reducing the acquisition time to within 23 heartbeats, which was previously not possible. In silico heart simulations demonstrated a RMS error to the fully sampled native resolution ground truth of 4.2° when combined in first‐order circularly polarized mode (mean flip angle 66°) at an acceleration factor of 4. The 14 s 3D B 1 + maps acquired in the brain have a RMS error of 1.9° to the fully sampled (mean flip angle 86°). Conclusion: The proposed method is demonstrated as a fast pTx calibration technique in the brain and a promising method for pTx calibration in the body
Evidence for transfer followed by breakup in 7Li + 65Cu
The observation of a large cross-section for the alpha + d channel compared
to breakup into the alpha + t channel from an exclusive measurement for the
7Li+65Cu system at 25 MeV is presented. A detailed analysis of the angular
distribution using coupled channels Born approximation calculations has
provided clear evidence that the observed alpha + d events arise from a two
step process, i.e. direct transfer to the 2.186 MeV (3+) resonance in the alpha
+ d continuum of 6Li followed by breakup, and are not due to final state

Financial phantasmagoria: corporate image-work in times of crisis
Our purpose in this article is to relate the real movements in the economy during 2008 to the ?image-work? of financial institutions. Over the period January?December 2008 we collected 241 separate advertisements from 61 financial institutions published in the Financial Times. Reading across the ensemble of advertisements for themes and evocative images provides an impression of the financial imaginaries created by these organizations as the global financial crisis unfolded. In using the term ?phantasmagoria? we move beyond its colloquial sense of a set of strange images designed to dazzle towards the more technical connotation used by Ranci�re (2004) who suggested that words and images can offer a trace of an overall determining set-up if they are torn from their obviousness so they become phantasmagoric figures. The key phantasmagoric figure we identify here is that of the financial institution as timeless, immortal and unchanging; a coherent and autonomous entity amongst other actors. This notion of uniqueness belies the commonality of thinking which precipitated the global financial crisis as well as the limited capacity for control of financial institutions in relation to market events. It also functions as a powerful naturalizing force, making it hard to question certain aspects of the recent period of ?capitalism in crisis?
