    By their very nature, patents are exclusionary. A patent grants the right to exclude others from making use of an invention or process. But patents are also tools to promote innovation. However, when an invalid patent is granted, the patent becomes an exclusionary tool that also chills innovation. Invalid cannabis patents may be chilling innovation in the cannabis market, but they may not be the only thing. While the Controlled Substances Act continues to prohibit cannabis at a federal level, researchers and medical professionals will be unsure of the legality of their actions. This naturally leads to another chilling effect in the use of cannabis in the medical field and within research firms. By amending the Controlled Substances Act loosen restrictions on marijuana, specifically in the fields of research and medicine, the federal government can help to promote innovation in the cannabis market. This approach could eliminate the gaps in cannabis research and knowledge that continue to plague the U.S. to this day

    Radiative corrections to Higgs-boson production in association with top-quark pairs at e+ e- colliders

    We have calculated the complete O(alpha) and O(alpha_s) radiative corrections to the Higgs-production process e+ e- -> t anti-t H in the Standard Model. This process is particularly interesting for the measurement of the top-quark Yukawa coupling at a future e+ e- collider. The calculation of the O(alpha) corrections is described in some detail including, in particular, the treatment of the soft and collinear singularities. The discussion of numerical results focuses on the total cross section as well as on angular and energy distributions of the outgoing particles. The electroweak corrections turn out to be sizable and can reach the order of +/-10%. They result from cancellations between electromagnetic, fermionic, and weak bosonic corrections, each of which are of the order of +/-10%.Comment: 32 pages, LaTeX, 12 postscript figure

    Some of the most interesting Higgs-production processes at future e+ e- colliders are of the type e+ e- -> f anti-f H. We present a calculation of the complete O(alpha) corrections to these processes in the Standard Model for final-state neutrinos and top quarks. Initial-state radiation beyond O(alpha) at the leading-logarithmic level as well as QCD corrections are also included.     QCD Corrections to t anti-b H^- Associated Production in e^+ e^- Annihilation

    We calculate the QCD corrections to the cross section of e^+ e^- -> t anti-b H^- and its charge-conjugate counterpart within the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. This process is particularly important if m_t b H^+ and e^+ e^- -> H^+ H^- are not allowed kinematically. Large logarithmic corrections that arise in the on-mass-shell scheme of quark mass renormalization, especially from the t anti-b H^- Yukawa coupling for large values of tan(beta), are resummed by adopting the modified minimal-subtraction scheme, so that the convergence behavior of the perturbative expansion is improved.     The cross section for the production of the lightest neutral Higgs boson in association with a high-pT hadronic jet, calculated in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), is presented. The expectations for the hadronic cross section at the Large Hadron Collider are discussed using reasonable kinematical cuts. In particular the contributions from superpartner loops to the cross section and their dependence on the parameters of the MSSM are investigated and found to be significant. Comparisons show that the production rate for h0 + jet in the MSSM can differ widely from the corresponding standard-model prediction.Comment: 20 page

    The process pp -> top anti-top bottom anti-bottom + X represents a very important background reaction to searches at the LHC, in particular to top anti-top H production where the Higgs boson decays into a bottom anti-bottom pair. A successful analysis of top anti-top H at the LHC requires the knowledge of direct top anti-top bottom anti-bottom production at NLO in QCD.     Taijiquan the 'Taiji World' way: Towards a cosmopolitan vision of ecology.

    In this article, we present a case study analysis of data gathered on the practice of the art of Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) in one UK context. Our interest in looking at this physical culture was in exploring if/how physical cultures of shared embodied experience and practice may help “sow the seeds of environmental awareness”. In so doing, we illustrate certain affinities between this interpretation of the art and Beck’s idea of a “cosmopolitan vision of ecology”. We present an analysis of documentary and interview data of one English Taijiquan organisation and how it currently promotes the idea of interconnectedness, wellbeing and an alternative meta-narrative for living through the practice of Taijiquan. We conclude that, while further research is needed, there is evidence that a cosmopolitan vision for ecology is emerging in physical cultures such as Taijiquan
