    Insights into the effective management of support groups for Aboriginal Australian women with substance use disorders

    Aboriginal women with substance use disorders are a vulnerable population. This study examines approaches used to deliver support to Aboriginal women in an outpatient alcohol and other drug treatment service in Australia. A descriptive qualitative study was undertaken using structured interviews to explore staff and client perceptions of current and optimal processes for the management of an Aboriginal women’s group. The findings show that approaches to the management of the support group involved personal skills development and therapeutic strategies that were all grounded in the women’s social and cultural context. A framework is proposed for the management of support groups that may be transferrable to other culturally distinct and marginalised populations

    Near Infrared Spectroscopy of Young Brown Dwarfs in Upper Scorpius

    Spectroscopic follow-up is a pre-requisite for studies of the formation and early evolution of brown dwarfs. Here we present IRTF/SpeX near-infrared spectroscopy of 30 candidate members of the young Upper Scorpius association, selected from our previous survey work. All 24 high confidence members are confirmed as young very low mass objects with spectral types from M5 to L1, 15-20 of them are likely brown dwarfs. This high yield confirms that brown dwarfs in Upper Scorpius can be identified from photometry and proper motions alone, with negligible contamination from field objects (<4%). Out of the 6 candidates with lower confidence, 5 might still be young very low mass members of Upper Scorpius, according to our spectroscopy. We demonstrate that some very low mass class II objects exhibit radically different near infrared (0.6 - 2.5micron) spectra from class III objects, with strong excess emission increasing towards longer wavelengths and partially filled in features at wavelengths shorter than 1.25micron. These characteristics can obscure the contribution of the photosphere within such spectra. Therefore, we caution that near infrared derived spectral types for objects with discs may be unreliable. Furthermore, we show that the same characteristics can be seen to some extent in all class II and even a significant fraction of class III objects (~40%), indicating that some of them are still surrounded by traces of dust and gas. Based on our spectra, we select a sample of objects with spectral types of M5 to L1, whose near-infrared emission represents the photosphere only. We recommend the use of these objects as spectroscopic templates for young brown dwarfs in the future.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, Accepted in MNRA

    Understanding of factors that enable health promoters in implementing health-promoting schools: A systematic review and narrative synthesis of qualitative evidence

    © 2014 Hung et al. Health-promoting schools have been regarded as an important initiative in promoting child and adolescent health in school settings using the whole-school approach. Quantitative research has proved its effectiveness in various school-based programmes. However, few qualitative studies have been conducted to investigate the strategies used by health promoters to implement such initiatives. In this study, the researchers conducted a systematic review and narrative synthesis of the qualitative literature to identify important enablers assisting the implementation of health-promoting schools from the perspectives of health promoters. Five enablers have been identified from the review: (a) Following a framework/guideline to implement health-promoting schools; (b) Obtaining committed support and contributions from the school staff, school board management, government authorities, health agencies and other stakeholders; (c) Adopting a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to implementing HPS; (d) Establishing professional networks and relationships; and (e) Continuing training and education in school health promotion. This highlights the importance of developing school health policies that meet local health needs, and socio-cultural characteristics that can foster mutual understanding between the health and education sectors so as to foster health promotion in children and adolescents

    Top-quark couplings to TeV resonances at future lepton colliders

    We study the processes WLWL→ttˉW_L W_L \to t \bar t and WLZL→tbˉ(tˉb)W_L Z_L \to t\bar b (\bar t b) at future lepton colliders as probes of the couplings of the top quark to resonances at the TeV scale. We consider the cases in which the dominant low energy feature of a strongly interacting electroweak symmetry breaking sector is either a scalar or a vector resonance with mass near 1 TeV. We find that future lepton colliders with high energy and high luminosity have great potential to sensitively probe these physics scenarios. In particular, at a 1.5 TeV linear collider with an integrated luminosity of 200 fb−1^{-1}, we expect about 120 events for either a scalar or a vector to decay to ttˉ,tbˉt\bar t, t \bar b. Their leading partial decay widths, which characterize the coupling strengths, can be statistically determined to about 10% level.Comment: 33 pages, 9 ps figures, 1 tabl

    A state of delirium: deciphering the effect of inflammation on tau pathology in Alzheimer's disease

    Alzheimer's disease (AD), the predominant form of dementia, is highly correlated with the abnormal hyperphosphorylation and aggregation of tau. Immune responses are key drivers of AD and how they contribute to tau pathology in human disease remains largely unknown. This review summarises current knowledge on the association between inflammatory processes and tau pathology. While, preclinical evidence suggests that inflammation can indeed induce tau hyperphosphorylation at both pre- and post-tangles epitopes, a better understanding of whether this develops into advanced pathological features such as neurofibrillary tangles is needed. Microglial cells, the immune phagocytes in the central nervous system, appear to play a key role in regulating tau pathology, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Their activation can be detrimental via the secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators, particularly interleukin-1ÎČ, but also potentially beneficial through phagocytosis of extracellular toxic tau oligomers. Nevertheless, anti-inflammatory treatments in animal models were found protective, but whether or not they affect microglial phagocytosis of tau species is unknown. However, one major challenge to our understanding of the role of inflammation in the progression of tau pathology is the preclinical models used to address this question. They mostly rely on the use of septic doses of lipopolysaccharide that do not reflect the inflammatory conditions experienced AD patients, questioning whether the impact of inflammation on tau pathology in these models is dose-dependent and relevant to the human disease. The use of more translational models of inflammation corroborated with verification in clinical investigations are necessary to progress our understanding of the interplay between inflammation and tau pathology

    Molecular sex-typing in shorebirds: a review of an essential method for research in evolution, ecology and conservation

    Knowing the correct sex of individuals is essential both for research in evolutionary ecology and for practical conservation. Recent molecular advances have produced cheap, quick and reliable methods for sexing birds including chicks, juveniles, immatures and adults. Shorebird researchers have not yet fully utilised these advances. Here we provide an overview of work in this area to date with two objectives: (i) to review the major applications of molecular sexing and findings of shorebird research so far, and (ii) to provide an essential guide on how to carry out molecular sexing using current methods whilst avoiding methodological pitfalls. We encourage shorebird researchers to make better use of molecular sex-typing techniques in studies of conservation, migration, foraging ecology and breeding behaviour

    Dynamic Front Transitions and Spiral-Vortex Nucleation

    This is a study of front dynamics in reaction diffusion systems near Nonequilibrium Ising-Bloch bifurcations. We find that the relation between front velocity and perturbative factors, such as external fields and curvature, is typically multivalued. This unusual form allows small perturbations to induce dynamic transitions between counter-propagating fronts and nucleate spiral vortices. We use these findings to propose explanations for a few numerical and experimental observations including spiral breakup driven by advective fields, and spot splitting

Inflammation is considered a mechanistic driver of Alzheimer's disease, thought to increase tau phosphorylation, the first step to the formation of neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). To further understand how inflammation impacts the development of tau pathology, we used (hTau) mice, which express all six, non-mutated, human tau isoforms, but with an altered ratio of tau isoforms favoring 3R tau due to the concomitant loss of murine tau (mTau) that is predominantly 4R. Such an imbalance pattern has been related to susceptibility to NFTs formation, but whether or not this also affects susceptibility to systemic inflammation and related changes in tau phosphorylation is not known. To reduce the predominance of 3R tau by increasing 4R tau availability, we bred hTau mice on a heterozygous mTau background and compared the impact of systemic inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in hTau mice hetero- or homozygous mTau knockout. Three-month-old male wild-type (Wt), mTau+/-, mTau-/-, hTau/mTau+/-, and hTau/mTau-/- mice were administered 100, 250, or 330 Όg/kg of LPS or its vehicle phosphate buffer saline (PBS) [intravenously (i.v.), n = 8-9/group]. Sickness behavior, reflected by behavioral suppression in the spontaneous alternation task, hippocampal tau phosphorylation, measured by western immunoblotting, and circulating cytokine levels were quantified 4 h after LPS administration. The persistence of the LPS effects (250 Όg/kg) on these measures, and food burrowing behavior, was assessed at 24 h post-inoculation in Wt, mTau+/-, and hTau/mTau+/- mice (n = 9-10/group). In the absence of immune stimulation, increasing 4R tau levels in hTau/mTau+/- exacerbated pS202 and pS396/404 tau phosphorylation, without altering total tau levels or worsening early behavioral perturbations characteristic of hTau/mTau-/- mice. We also show for the first time that modulating 4R tau levels in hTau mice affects the response to systemic inflammation. Behavior was suppressed in all genotypes 4 h following LPS administration, but hTau/mTau+/- exhibited more severe sickness behavior at the 100 Όg/kg dose and a milder behavioral and cytokine response than hTau/mTau-/- mice at the 330 Όg/kg dose. All LPS doses decreased tau phosphorylation at both epitopes in hTau/mTau+/- mice, but pS202 levels were selectively reduced at the 100 Όg/kg dose in hTau/mTau-/- mice. Behavioral suppression and decreased tau phosphorylation persisted at 24 h following LPS administration in hTau/mTau+/- mice

    The worldwide increase in temperature has resulted in a marked increase in heat waves (heat extremes) that carries a markedly increased risk for morbidity and mortality. The kidney has a unique role not only in protecting the host from heat and dehydration but also is an important site of heat-associated disease. Here we review the potential impact of global warming and heat extremes on kidney diseases. High temperatures can result in increased core temperatures, dehydration, and blood hyperosmolality. Heatstroke (both clinical and subclinical whole-body hyperthermia) may have a major role in causing both acute kidney disease, leading to increased risk of acute kidney injury from rhabdomyolysis, or heat-induced inflammatory injury to the kidney. Recurrent heat and dehydration can result in chronic kidney disease (CKD) in animals and theoretically plays a role in epidemics of CKD developing in hot regions of the world where workers are exposed to extreme heat. Heat stress and dehydration also has a role in kidney stone formation, and poor hydration habits may increase the risk for recurrent urinary tract infections. The resultant social and economic consequences include disability and loss of productivity and employment. Given the rise in world temperatures, there is a major need to better understand how heat stress can induce kidney disease, how best to provide adequate hydration, and ways to reduce the negative effects of chronic heat exposure.Published versio

    A study of the social and physical environment in catering kitchens and the role of the chef in promoting positive health and safety behaviour

    This is the account of a mixed method study of chefs and their kitchens in order to identify the nature of their workplace and how this affects their ability to manage health and safety in the kitchen. It included extended periods of observation, monitoring of physical parameters, analysis of records of reported accidents, and a series of reflexive interviews. The findings were integrated and then fed back in a smaller number of second interviews in order to test whether the findings fitted in with the chefs' understanding of their world. Major factors identified included survival in a market environment, the status of the chef (and the kitchen) within organisations, marked autocracy of chefs, and an increasing tempo building up to service time with commensurate heat, noise, and activity. In particular during the crescendo, a threshold shift in risk tolerance was identified. The factors, their interplay, and their implications for health and safety in the catering kitchen are discussed
