    Innovations that Address Socioeconomic, Cultural, and Geographic Barriers to Preventive Oral Health Care

    This report focuses on nine oral health innovations that integrate service delivery and workforce models in order to reduce or eliminate socioeconomic, geographic, and cultural barriers to care. Two additional reports in this series describe the remaining programs that provide care in non-dental settings and care to young children. Although the programs are diverse in their approaches as well as in the specific characteristics of the communities they serve, a common factor among them is the implementation of multiple strategies to increase the number of children from low-income families who access preventive care, and also to engage families and communities in investing in and prioritizing oral health. For low-income children and their families, the barriers that must be addressed to increase access to preventive oral health care are numerous. For example, even children covered by public insurance programs face a shortage of dentists that accept Medicaid and who specialize in pediatric dentistry.(Guay, 2004).The effects of poverty intersect with other barriers such as living in remote geographic areas and community-wide history of poor access to dental care in populations such as recent immigrants . Overcoming these barriers requires creative strategies that address transportation barriers; establish welcoming environments for oral health care; and are linguistically and culturally relevant. Each of these nine programs is based on such strategies, including:-Expanding the dental workforce through training new types of providers or adding new providers to their workforce to increase reach and community presence;-Implementing new strategies to increase the cost-effectiveness of care so that more oral health care services are available and accessible;-Providing training and technical assistance that increase opportunities for and competence in delivering oral health education and care to children;-Developing creative service delivery models that address transportation and cultural barriers as well as the fear and stigma associated with dental care that may arise in communities with historically poor access.The findings from the EAs of these programs are synthesized to highlight diverse and innovative strategies for overcoming barriers to access that have potential for rigorous evaluation that could emerge as best practices. If proven effective, these innovative program elements could then be disseminated and replicated to increase access for populations in need of preventive oral health care

    Multi-agent system for dynamic manufacturing system optimization

    This paper deals with the application of multi-agent system concept for optimization of dynamic uncertain process. These problems are known to have a computationally demanding objective function, which could turn to be infeasible when large problems are considered. Therefore, fast approximations to the objective function are required. This paper employs bundle of intelligent systems algorithms tied together in a multi-agent system. In order to demonstrate the system, a metal reheat furnace scheduling problem is adopted for highly demanded optimization problem. The proposed multi-agent approach has been evaluated for different settings of the reheat furnace scheduling problem. Particle Swarm Optimization, Genetic Algorithm with different classic and advanced versions: GA with chromosome differentiation, Age GA, and Sexual GA, and finally a Mimetic GA, which is based on combining the GA as a global optimizer and the PSO as a local optimizer. Experimentation has been performed to validate the multi-agent system on the reheat furnace scheduling problem

    Person-first Language in Healthcare: The Missing Link in Healthcare Simulation Training

    Simulation pedagogy and training strive to adequately educate practitioners who will care for a diverse patient population. In the pursuit of protecting patients, simulation education has included a curriculum of cultural humility, diversity, equity, and inclusion that provides patient-centered best-practice. However, the missing link is person-first language essential for optimum patient/client communication. Failing to use person-first language can negatively affect patient-provider relationships. The result can adversely lead to poor patient outcomes due to mistrust, errors, decreased satisfaction, poor adherence to treatment, wasted resources, and increased healthcare costs. The use of words and how others perceive the utilization of those words matter. It is essential to acknowledge that words matter as a symbol of respect and identity in the quest towards inclusive practices. Healthcare providers carry the burden of providing quality and safe patient care. They should incorporate training strategies such as using person-first language and evidence-based resources to support an inclusive culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion

    Influence of Age and Gender on Indoor Rowing Performance

    Physiological functional capacity is important in determining one’s ability to perform functional tasks and can be determined by studying peak exercise performance. Rowing is a unique sport requiring substantial muscle strength as well as high endurance capacity. Since it is a non-weight bearing activity, a number of older adults in general and older women in particular engage in this activity as they age. PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between aging, gender, and exercise task duration using indoor rowing performance records. METHODS: World records from indoor rowing events were analyzed and plotted against age (17-99 years of age) in both men and women. Rowing events included time trials in distance (e.g., 2000m race) and in time (e.g., 4 minutes race). To standardize these events, all of the performance data were converted to race speed prior to the data analyses. RESULTS: In both men and women, rowing performance declined linearly in all the duration events. The magnitudes of the age-related declines are mild to modest compared with other sporting events previously reported (e.g., running, weight lifting). For women, peak performance was observed in the 19-29 age group for 12 out of the 13 rowing events examined. For men, peak performance was recorded in the 30-39 age group for 8 out of 13 of the events, and in the remaining 5 events, the difference in performance times between the 19-29 and 30-39 age groups was less than 2%. When the data were expressed as a 50-yr decline in rowing performance from the 19-29 age group to the 70-79 age group, women had a greater decrease in performance in shorter sprinting events; however, as the events increased in distance requiring more endurance, the percent decline in performance were similar between men and women. CONCLUSION: The findings in this cross-sectional study indicate that physiological functional capacity as assessed by rowing performance declined linearly but mildly with advancing age, and the rate of age-associated decline is influenced greatly by gender and exercise task duration

    A Memetic Analysis of a Phrase by Beethoven: Calvinian Perspectives on Similarity and Lexicon-Abstraction

    This article discusses some general issues arising from the study of similarity in music, both human-conducted and computer-aided, and then progresses to a consideration of similarity relationships between patterns in a phrase by Beethoven, from the first movement of the Piano Sonata in A flat major op. 110 (1821), and various potential memetic precursors. This analysis is followed by a consideration of how the kinds of similarity identified in the Beethoven phrase might be understood in psychological/conceptual and then neurobiological terms, the latter by means of William Calvin’s Hexagonal Cloning Theory. This theory offers a mechanism for the operation of David Cope’s concept of the lexicon, conceived here as a museme allele-class. I conclude by attempting to correlate and map the various spaces within which memetic replication occurs

    Awe and Wonder in Scientific Practice: Implications for the Relationship Between Science and Religion

    This paper examines the role of awe and wonder in scientific practice. Drawing on evidence from psychological research and the writings of scientists and science communicators, I argue that awe and wonder play a crucial role in scientific discovery. They focus our attention on the natural world, encourage open-mindedness, diminish the self (particularly feelings of self-importance), help to accord value to the objects that are being studied, and provide a mode of understanding in the absence of full knowledge. I will flesh out implications of the role of awe and wonder in scientific discovery for debates on the relationship between science and religion. Abraham Heschel argued that awe and wonder are religious emotions because they reduce our feelings of self-importance, and thereby help to cultivate the proper reverent attitude towards God. Yet metaphysical naturalists such as Richard Dawkins insist that awe and wonder need not lead to any theistic commitments for scientists. The awe some scientists experience can be regarded as a form of non-theistic spirituality, which is neither a reductive naturalism nor theism. I will attempt to resolve the tension between these views by identifying some common ground

    The prediction of the three-dimensional native structure of proteins from the knowledge of their amino acid sequence, known as the protein folding problem, is one of the most important yet unsolved issues of modern science. Since the conformational behaviour of flexible molecules is nothing more than a complex physical problem, increasingly more physicists are moving into the study of protein systems, bringing with them powerful mathematical and computational tools, as well as the sharp intuition and deep images inherent to the physics discipline. This work attempts to facilitate the first steps of such a transition. In order to achieve this goal, we provide an exhaustive account of the reasons underlying the protein folding problem enormous relevance and summarize the present-day status of the methods aimed to solving it. We also provide an introduction to the particular structure of these biological heteropolymers, and we physically define the problem stating the assumptions behind this (commonly implicit) definition. Finally, we review the 'special flavor' of statistical mechanics that is typically used to study the astronomically large phase spaces of macromolecules.     Developing a user informed training package for mentoring people on the autism spectrum

    In light of the limited evidence-base and the criticisms of existing guidance, a two-year pilot study was funded by Research Autism to establish a mentoring scheme, designed with input from people on the autism spectrum and their families and supporters. The impact of the scheme in improving the wellbeing of adults on the spectrum will be rigorously examined.
