    Assessing Water-Supply Potential of Abandoned Underground Coal Mines in Eastern Kentucky

    Use of water in abandoned underground coal mines for municipal, industrial, agricultural, or domestic water supplies is dependent upon the water quantity and quality. For either of these factors, the requirements of the user will play a role in what water quantity or quality is acceptable. This report provides analysis of field-derived water-quality and -quantity characteristics for six abandoned underground coal mines in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field. In addition, some ancillary data from State regulatory agencies were used to help characterize water quality coming from the mines. This study demonstrates that water quality in abandoned deep mines can be quite variable. Water-quality characteristics vary from mine to mine because of the position of the mine within the groundwater flow system, the mineralogy of the coal seam and the enclosing bedrock, and the time elapsed since the mine was flooded. Total dissolved solids values ranged from 194 to 2,016 µS/cm. Based on TDS, coal mines in the Manchester and Upper Elkhorn No. 3 coals produced the poorest water quality. In the study area, these seams were mined below the elevation of local drainage. The increase in TDS is a result of increased mineralization of groundwater caused by relatively slow movement and increased age of the water in the distal ends of the groundwater fl ow system. Another water-quality factor to consider in below-drainage mines is the length of time since mine closure. The time since closure and subsequent flooding of the mine is important because the reduction of acid-generating salts depends on the amount of time available for flushing. For these reasons, water quality should be analyzed for each potential water source, even within a given mine. Water-quality monitoring must include sampling and analysis during water-withdrawal testing to identify any changes in quality associated with induced mobility of otherwise slow-moving to stagnant water within a mine. Water quantity from abandoned deep mines varies greatly, depending on many variables that control flooded volume of and recharge rate to the mine. Major variables controlling groundwater discharge from a mine are the surface area overlying the mine, the position of the mine within the local and regional groundwater systems, and the structural geology of the site, which determines how groundwater drains from the mine. Recharge rates ranged from 120,000 to 1,230,000 gal/day; however, some deep mines showed net losses in storage because of lack of recharge during drought periods. This study demonstrates that water quality and quantity in abandoned deep mines are suitable for water supplies. Both quantity and quality are variable between mines, however. Variations can be attributed to geologic controls, physical setting, the age of the mine, and the rate of flushing. Therefore, water quality and quantity must be analyzed for each potential mine source, and must be analyzed throughout the time of water withdrawal

    Survival of Northern Bobwhite Infected with Avian Pox

    Avian pox is an enzootic disease among northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) in the southeastern United States, but occasionally it occurs as local or regional epizootics. Little information exists concerning survival of wild bobwhite infected with this disease. During the winters of 1985 and 1986, we compared survival of radio-tagged bobwhite with and without pox lesions. Pox lesions were considered wet or dry depending on field evaluations. The incidence of pox was greater in 1985 (x1=\u27 16.536, df= 1, P\u3c 0.005) than in 1986. Bobwhite with wet pox lesions weighed less than those with dry pox (t = 2.550, P = 0.014) or no pox (t = 2.393, P = 0.018). In 1985 6-week survivorship of bobwhite showing signs of wet pox was different compared to those with dry pox (Z = 1. 7 498, P = 0.0402) and no pox (Z = 2.9992, P = 0.0014). Survivorship of birds with dry pox and no pox was not different (Z = 0.6460, P = 0.2611. Bobwhite with wet pox in 1985 had 45.6 and 53.3% overall lower 6-week survival rates than birds with dry and no pox, respectively. No difference in survivorship existed between bobwhite with dry pox and those with no pox in 1986 (Z = 1.1727, P= 0.1210). No difference in predatory agents responsible for mortalities between birds with or without pox occurred (X2 = 0.8851, df= 2, P\u3e 0.05). All mortality of infected birds appeared to be caused by predation and not the disease itself. Implications of these data for inter- and intraspecific disease transmission are discussed

    For decades, the concept of enjoyment has been used to measure the psychological benefits of activities and has been shown to determine future behavior toward activities and objects of interest. However, there has been little consensus on the definition and dimensionality of enjoyment. This study introduced a new measure of enjoyment with scale development and validation reported. CFA and EFA findings from 1466 participants across 739 different activities were reported. The instrument developed measured enjoyment across activities, with demonstrated content validity, internal consistency, discriminant and convergent validity. The final 25-item version of the ENJOY scale is composed of 5 factors: pleasure, relatedness, competence, challenge/improvement, and engagement. Discussion of the ENJOY Scale places it within the conceptual framework of Self-Determination Theory

    Glucocorticoid Regulation of Elastin Synthesis in Human Fibroblasts: Down-Regulation in Fibroblasts from Normal Dermis But Not From Keloids

    Keloids arise as benign connective tissue masses at sites of injury in genetically predisposed individuals, In addition to excessive collagen accumulation, there is biochemical and histologic evidence of elastic tissue. Previous studies showed that glucocorticoid regulation of collagen synthesis differs in fibroblasts from normal adult dermis and keloids, To define further the abnormal regulation of matrix synthesis in keloid fibroblasts, we examined glucocorticoid regulation of elastin synthesis. The basal level of elastin synthesis was significantly higher in keloid than in normal cells, and hydrocortisone reduced synthesis of elastin and elastin mRNA in normal but not in keloid fibroblasts. We had shown previously that fibroblasts from fetal dermis resembled keloid fibroblasts in glucocorticoid regulation of growth and collagen synthesis. In this study, glucocorticoids failed to down-regulate elastin synthesis in fetal cells that had not differentiated to produce normal levels of elastin, whereas fetal cells with normal elastin production exhibited glucocorticoid down-regulation. Abnormal regulation in keloid cells was independent of cell density and was confined to fibroblasts cultured from the keloid nodule. These findings reinforce the conclusion that a matrix-regulatory pathway is deranged in these focal lesions. Coordinate down-regulation of collagen and elastin by hydrocortisone in normal adult denial fibroblasts and the failure of hydrocortisone to down-regulate synthesis of either protein in keloid cells support the existence of common elements in the regulatory pathways of these two matrix proteins

    Screening and Health Behaviors among Persons Diagnosed with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis and Their Relatives

    Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) is a rare autosomal dominantly inherited colorectal cancer syndrome. Individuals with FAP often undergo colectomy and are recommended to follow several surveillance protocols. Biological relatives of persons with FAP may also be at risk and thus should undergo genetic counseling. Screening adherence, genetic testing, and other health behaviors among individuals with FAP and their relatives are not well characterized. We conducted a cross-sectional self-report survey with individuals who have FAP (n=35) and their biological relatives (n=15). Respondents were recruited through a cancer center registry for inherited colon cancers. Most relatives had undergone colon cancer screening; 40% had undergone genetic testing. One fifth of respondents with FAP had not undergone an upper endoscopy, contrary to usual recommendations. Cigarette smoking rates were above average and were higher among FAP respondents. Use of vitamin supplements was fairly common, more so among those with FAP. Although most people had been screened, there are areas for improvement, notably for upper endoscopy among individuals with FAP and genetic testing among family members. Several other health-risk behaviors and health concerns other than FAP were identified. Further research into factors contributing to screening rates and other health behaviors in this high-risk population is warranted

    Screening for primary aldosteronism- normal ranges for aldosterone and renin in three South African population groups

    Objective. To establish normal ranges for plasma aldosterone, renin and aldosterone / renin (A/ R) ratio in South African normotensives under typical ou tpatient conditions, and to estimate the prevalence of primary aldosteronism (PA) among hypertensives in primary care settings.Design and methods. One hundred and thirty-six normotensive subjects and 154 sex- and age-matched hypertensives at three primary care clinics had measurements of blood pressure, plasma creatinine, K+, aldosterone, plasma renin activity, and spot urine for urinary Na+/ creatinine ratio. Medication was not withdrawn before testing.Results. Mean plasma renin activity in black normotensive subjects (0.95 ± 1.25 ng/ ml/ h, mean± standard deviation (SD)) was significantly lower than in white (2.09 ± 1.12 ng/ ml/ h; P < 0.0001) and coloured (1.81 ± 1.86 ng/ ml/ h, P = 0.013) normotensives. Mean plasma aldosterone in black normotensives (306 ± 147 pmol/ 1) was also significantly lower than in white (506 ± 324 pmol/1, P = 0.0002) and coloured (418 ± 304 pmol/1, P = 0.0148) normotensives. In hypertensives, there were no significant differences in renin or aldosterone levels between the three population groups. Urinary Na+ /creatinine ratios, an index of Na+ intake, were not significantly different in the three population groups. None of the normotensives had an A/R ratio ≥ 1 000 plus aldosterone ≥ 750, while 7.1% of hypertensives exceeded these levels, suggesting that they are appropriate criteria for screening for PA.Conclusions. A large fraction of black normotensive subjects had low renin and aldosterone levels compared with whites, suggesting a salt-retaining tendency in black subjects. These results have important implications for the interpretation of plasma renin and aldosterone levels in hypertensive patients. In primary care settings, 7.1% of hypertensives had biochemical results indicating the need for investigation of PA

    Angular versus radial correlation effects on momentum distributions of light two-electron ions

    We investigate different correlation mechanisms for two-electron systems and compare their respective effects on various electron distributions. The simplicity of the wave functions used allows for the derivation of closed-form analytical expressions for all electron distributions.
