    Thévenin's Battery Model Parameter Estimation Based on Simulink

    Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) proved over time to be one of the best choices among rechargeable batteries. Their small size, high energy density, long life, and low maintenance need make them a prominent candidate for the role of the most widespread energy storage system. They have the potential to monopolize the green technology sector. An accurate definition of the parameters defining the behaviour of the battery in different operating conditions is thus essential, as their knowledge proves crucial in certain fields such as those that involve electric vehicles. This paper proposes the estimation of the values of the parameters of the Thevenin equivalent circuit of a LIB commercial cell. Experimental data obtained through constant current charge/discharge cycles are analysed through a Simulink model, and results are obtained as a function of the state of charge (SOC) for a fixed and controlled temperature value. The results achieved with the proposed model can monitor the salient parameters of the equivalent circuit with an error between 7 and 10%

    RELAÇÃO ENTRE AS VARIAÇÕES DA LINHA DE COSTA E AS CARACTERÍSTICAS MORFODINÂMICAS DA PRAIA DA ARMAÇÃO, ILHA DE SANTA CATARINA

    A Praia da Armação, localizada no sudeste de Ilha de Santa Catarina, vem sofrendo nas últimas décadas um intenso processo erosivo em especial no setor central e sul da enseada. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a relação entre os padrões de deslocamento da linha de costa da Praia da Armação e suas características morfodinâmicas. Inicialmente foi realizado estudo de variação da linha de costa através de imagens aéreas de 1977, 1994, 2002 e 2009. Como caracterização morfológica foi levantada a granulometria em 5 pontos ao longo da enseada e 10 perfis praiais subaéreos em 2 períodos distintos. E, a partir de 30 anos (1980 – 2009) de dados de reanálise de ondas, caracterizou-se o clima de ondas atuantes na região nas últimas três décadas. As análises de perfis praiais e variação de linha de costa mostraram elevada instabilidade nestes aspectos morfológicos da praia ao longo do tempo. Os padrões de progradação e retração da linha de costa encontrados nas três décadas de estudo indicaram uma forte relação com o clima de ondas da região. Porém, se verifica uma perda líquida de sedimentos ao longo do tempo, que pode estar associada à intervenções antrópicas que alteraram a dinâmica natural da praia

    A framework for operative and social sustainability functionalities in Human- Centric Cyber-Physical Production Systems

    In a near future where manufacturing companies are faced with the rapid technological developments of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and Industry 4.0, a need arises to consider how this will affect human operators remaining as a vital and important resource in modern production systems. What will the implications of these orchestrated and ubiquitous technologies in production – a concept we call Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) – be on the health, learning and operative performance of human workers? This paper makes three main contributions to address the question. First, it synthesizes the diverse literature regarding CPS and social sustainability in production systems. Second, it conceptualizes a holistic framework, the CyFL Matrix, and outlines a guideline to analyze how the functionalities of a CPPS relate to operational and social sustainability-related performance impacts at different levels of analysis. Finally, it presents an industrial use case, which the CyFL Matrix and the related guidelines are applied to. In doing so, the study offers first support to researchers and managers of manufacturing companies willing to define suitable operational and social sustainability-related performances for Human-centric Cyber-Physical Production Systems of the future

    Integrated Somatic and Germline Whole-Exome Sequencing Analysis in Women with Lung Cancer after a Previous Breast Cancer

    open20Women treated for breast cancer (BC) are at risk of developing secondary tumors, such as lung cancer (LC). Since rare germline variants have been linked to multiple cancer development, we hypothesized that BC survivors might be prone to develop LC as a result of harboring rare variants. Sixty patients with LC with previous BC (the study population; SP) and 53 women with either BC or LC and no secondary cancer (control population; CP) were enrolled. Whole exome sequencing was performed in both tumors and unaffected tissues from 28/60 SP patients, and in germline DNA from 32/53 CP. Candidate genes were validated in the remaining individuals from both populations. We found two main mutational signature profiles: S1 (C>T) in all BCs and 16/28 LCs, and S2 (C>A) which is strongly associated with smoking, in 12/28 LCs. The burden test over rare germline variants in S1-LC vs CP identified 248 genes. Validation confirmed GSN as significantly associated with LC in never-smokers. In conclusion, our data suggest two signatures involved in LC onset in women with previous BC. One of these signatures is linked to smoking.     explorative study on the use of omalizumab in patients suffering from interstitial cystitis bladder pain syndrome

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of omalizumab in the treatment of Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS), evaluated by visual analogue score for pain and urgency- frequency, O'Leary-Sant IC symptom and problem index questionnaire, Pain Urgency Frequency questionnaire and Patient Global Assessment questionnaire. Four female patients with a diagnosis of IC/BPS were included in the study, with an age between 20 and 39 years. In the first patient the subjective final evaluation was of a marked improvement. The second patient had a moderate improvement of the subjective final evaluation. The third patient considered her overall clinical situation to have slightly improved after treatment. One 32-year-old patient, with multiple allergies, discontinued treatment after 3 months and could not complete the study due to side effects. Omalizumab was subcutaneously administered to patients with IC/PBS; it induced both a subjective and objective improvement of symptoms in 2 patients enrolled in the study

    Second-opinion stress tele-echocardiography for the Adonhers (Aged donor heart rescue by stress echo) project

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To resolve the current shortage of donor hearts, we established the Adonhers protocol. An upward shift of the donor age cut-off limit (from the present 55 to 65 years) is acceptable if a stress echo screening on the candidate donor heart is normal. This study aimed to verify feasibility of a "second opinion" of digitally transferred images of stress echo results to minimize technical variability in selection of aged donor hearts for heart transplant.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The informatics infrastructure was created for a core lab reading with a second opinion from the Pisa stress echo lab. To test the system, simulation standard stress echo cineloops were sent digitally from 5 peripheral labs to the central core lab.</p> <p>Starting January 2009, real marginal donor stress echos were sent via internet to the central core echo lab, Pisa, for a second opinion before heart transplant.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the simulation protocol, 30 dipyridamole stress echocardiograms were sent from the five peripheral echo labs to the central core lab in Pisa. Both the echo images and reports were correctly uploaded in the web system and sent to the core echo lab; the second opinion evaluation was obtained in all cases (100% feasibility). In the transplant protocol, eight donor cases were sent to the Pisa core lab for the second opinion protocol, and six of them were transplanted in marginal recipients.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Second-Opinion Stress Tele-Echocardiography can effectively be performed in a network aimed to safely expand the heart donor pool for heart transplant.</p

    A antepraia do litoral central do Rio Grande do Sul (RS) apresenta batimetria composta por parcéis. Com o objetivo de averiguar o comportamento de ondas que se propagam sobre parcéis, uma série de experimentos numéricos de propagação de ondas sobre “calotas” idealizadas foram realizados com os modelos REF-DIF 1 e REF-DIF S. Foram geradas batimetrias hipotéticas na forma de parcéis esféricos e elípticos sobre fundos planos e inclinados, além de combinações de duas “calotas”. Os testes mostraram que o espalhamento direcional do espectro de ondas, a forma, profundidade e a distância que a onda refrata sobre os parceis determinam as características da focalização e distribuição de alturas de onda atrás dos mesmos. Parcéis em águas intermediárias e rasas focalizam energia causando padrões complicados no campo de ondas em águas mais rasas, o que facilita a formação de correntes e provavelmente trocas de sedimentos em regiões próximas.The Rio Grande do Sul state central coast backshore has a bottom composed of shoals. To investigate the behavior of wave propagation over shoals a series of numerical experiments were realized with REF DIF 1 and REF DIF S models. Hypothetical spherical and eliptical bathymetries over flat and sloped bottoms were generated, and combinations of 2 shoals were created. The tests determined the wave spectra directional spreading, shoal forms, bottom depth and that the distance the wave refracts over shoals rules the characteristics of focalization and wave heights distribution behind these features. Intermediate and shallow water shoals focus energy causing complex patterns in shallower water wave fields, yelding current formation and potential sediment change in the vincinity of these areas

    Understanding the glycome: an interactive view of glycosylation from glycocompositions to glycoepitopes

    Nowadays, due to the advance of experimental techniques in glycomics, large collections of glycan profiles are regularly published. The rapid growth of available glycan data accentuates the lack of innovative tools for visualizing and exploring large amount of information. Scientists resort to using general-purpose spreadsheet applications to create ad hoc data visualization. Thus, results end up being encoded in publication images and text, while valuable curated data is stored in files as supplementary information. To tackle this problem, we have built an interactive pipeline composed with three tools: Glynsight, EpitopeXtractor and Glydin'. Glycan profile data can be imported in Glynsight, which generates a custom interactive glycan profile. Several profiles can be compared and glycan composition is integrated with structural data stored in databases. Glycan structures of interest can then be sent to EpitopeXtractor to perform a glycoepitope extraction. EpitopeXtractor results can be superimposed on the Glydin' glycoepitope network. The network visualization allows fast detection of clusters of glycoepitopes and discovery of potential new targets. Each of these tools is standalone or can be used in conjunction with the others, depending on the data and the specific interest of the user. All the tools composing this pipeline are part of the Glycomics@ExPASy initiative and are available at https://www.expasy.org/glycomics

    Multimodality imaging for atrial fibrosis detection in the era of precision medicine

    In recent years, atrial fibrillation (AF) has increasingly become a focus of attention because it represents the most encountered arrhythmia in clinical practice and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Issues underlying AF have long been debated; nevertheless, electrical, contractile, and structural remodeling is demonstrated to be the pivotal contributor to arrhythmic substrate. Fibrosis is a hallmark of arrhythmogenic structural remodeling, resulting from an accumulation of fibrillar collagen deposits, as a reparative process to replace degenerating myocardium with concomitant reactive fibrosis, which causes interstitial expansion. Although the precise role of fibrosis in AF initiation and maintenance remains to be fully elucidated, a better definition of its extent and distribution may assist in designing individually tailored ablation approaches and improving procedure outcomes by targeting the fibrotic substrates with an organized strategy employing imaging resources. A deep comprehension of the mechanisms underlying atrial fibrosis could be crucial to setting up improved strategies for preventing AF-promoting structural remodeling. Imaging modalities such as echocardiography, cardiac computed tomography, and cardiac magnetic resonance, combined sometimes with invasive electroanatomical mapping, could provide valuable information for the optimal patients’ management if their use is not limited to cardiac anatomy study but extended to characterize abnormal left atrial substrate. Although pulmonary vein isolation is usually efficacious in treating paroxysmal AF, it is not sufficient for many patients with nonparoxysmal arrhythmias, particularly those with longstanding persistent AF. Noninvasive imaging techniques play a pivotal role in the planning of arrhythmic substrates ablation and show a strong correlation with electro-anatomic mapping, whose novel multipolar mapping catheters allow nowadays a more precise comprehension of atrial substrate.
